Seventeen of the twenty-two years the author served with the United Nations Development Programme were spent with his wife, Delores, on assignments in Thailand, Samoa, China and Vietnam. The main focus of the book is a collection of vignettes describing experiences of living in these four countries. Some stories are humorous and are to be read just for fun (e.g., living conditions on a small isolated island). Other stories are serious and somber (e.g., retracing major battle sites of the Vietnam War). Some are pure adventure (e.g., the midnight visit to the leatherback turtle beach). Fascinating travel adventures in Malaysia and Burma (Myanmar) are also included. The first two chapters describe the author's introduction to values, politics and social justice issues. In addition, the author describes his experiences as a congressional staffer and college professor.
As the war in Iraq heated up and the American soldiers were deployed overseas to take part in the conflict, the need to send care packages and calm the nerves of their families became increasingly important. One small community in America rose to this challenge. A family from the New England community of Danvers, MA, whose son and daughter were both deployed at the time, received a call on the day the US entered Iraq. Their daughter, a deployed nurse named Tina, asked her parents for their help in collecting magazines and games to give to the troops who were recovering in the combat hospital. This simple call for help began a journey that included the formation of a non-profit organization, a nation-wide appeal for supplies, contributions from across the country, a trip to Iraq to speak to the troops, care packages exceeding one million, and national recognition. This heartwarming story will tell you of the happy days, the emotional moments, the surprise visits, the tragic phone calls, and the satisfying feeling of knowing you made a difference in a soldier's life and in a family's fear brought on by the separation. This is the story of helping others, of sharing pain and grief, of laughing together, and of knowing when the opportunity came to do something good for your country, you stepped up and took the plunge. It is a story of patriotism, a story of giving, a story of being true Americans.

This book sets out a simple guide for counsellors to help an abused woman move from being a victim to taking control of her life and relationships. First the woman is helped to understand if her positive personality traits such as hopefulness and deep empathy have resulted in her missing potential warning signs in an abusive relationship. We then move on to determine whether the person abusing the woman has features of a personality disorder. Such individuals are often abusive because of their unhealthy beliefs and attitudes towards others. If this is the case then the woman needs to let go of the hope that she can change her abuser as well as the guilt she may be carrying for the relationship not working. Other unhealthy past relationships are explored and these include her parents or other family members which may have predisposed her to tolerate abusive behaviour. The next stage includes educating the woman about practical strategies of assertiveness to deal with the abusers in her life. Throughout the sessions we provide her with the compassion of a listening ear, and validation for her courage. We help her understand that even though she has not received the love she had hoped for, she is still a beloved worthwhile child of God. She is then able to make a decision as to whether to stay in the abusive relationship or leave. In either case the goal is for her to take control of her life, deal assertively with the unhealthy people who are abusing her and learn how to choose healthy friends and become a healthy person herself.

The beauty of this book is that each poem is accompanied by a full-page beautiful illustration. The adult narrator will read the poem to the child, and the child will be able to identify in the image everything that is in the poem. Each poem is about a mermaid, but the beginning of the book concerns how the mermaids are instructed by a red octopus to fulfill their mermaid duties. Girls will love the book and that is the targeted audience.

Luis A. Rivera saw NYPD as larger-than-life while growing up in the South Bronx in the late 1960s and 1970s. From the time he was seven years old, he dream to become one of them. As a kid, he'd sneak a quick peek through the closed curtains just to see the arriving police cars-the old green, black, and white ones with a siren that seemed to go on forever. He'd notice the big Irish cops getting out of their police cars, with their hats on and nightsticks under their arms. In 1989, he was accepted into the New York City Police Academy. Soon, he was hitting the books and navigating shooting range qualifications. The courses were intense. As he achieved his dream, he soon realized the NYPD was not the Boy Scouts, and how unforgiving the police department can be. In this memoir, we look back at how it was like to be a rookie cop with it's ups and downs in an officer's career.
When she did not eat all the food on her plate, her Aunt Roselee said, "Mr. Needmore is going to get you when you grow up. You just wait and see." When the little girl lost a sock or scarf, Aunt Roselee told her, "Mr. Needmore is going to get you when you grow up. You just wait and see."Throughout her childhood, the girl wondered who Mr. Needmore was and what he looked like. Was he tall and skinny like a totem pole? Or was he short and fat like a wild buffalo? It was not until she was an adult that she discovered the identity of Mr. Needmore.A picture book for children, My Aunt Roselee's Mr. Needmore, shares a message to kids about becoming wise and not being wasteful in what is given and learning to be good keepers of the things life grants them.
This workbook was written and carefully constructed to help persons with substance use disorders begin to have successful lives. It will also help the substance users loved ones and mainstream society understand how to have a healthier non-judgmental approach to helping persons with substance use disorders. We may theorize that there must be some moral deficit in many who use substance's as we did in the 1970's. This has created an atmosphere of judgement and toxic shame making it more difficult for the substance user to achieve recovery.

No one is spared suffering - no one! To be human is to suffer. Grief, pain, injustice, disappointment - life serves these up in portions great and small. We can try to deny this reality or escape from it through endless diversions. We can even fall into despair, the seemingly rational response of a caring person when faced with a cold, uncaring world.Denial, diversion and despair. Is that all there is? Is there another way? A way that is honest about suffering and yet offers hope rather than despair, victory rather than victimhood?About twenty-five hundred years ago, a literary masterpiece came on the scene. Known as The Book of Job, a wisdom book in the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament, it has stirred serious thinkers and honest seekers for generations. To be sure, the grim story of a righteous man who loses everything - wealth, health and even his children - raises almost as many questions as it answers. But that is to its credit! The Book of Job never stoops to simplistic answers to hard questions. Instead, this narrative openly wrestles with some of life's most difficult moral and spiritual puzzles, including how to reconcile a loving, just God with a suffering and unjust world. Powerful and poetic, it points a way through life's most difficult challenges - the setbacks and sufferings that inevitably come our way. This is the way of Strength in Adversity, a way of honest hope and courageous faith.

Through a series of odd, disastrous and happy events that occurred in the life of a young boy, Frantic Souls share how resilient and courageous human being can be and still live a happy life. The book explored the struggle of two different families for the faith of Christianity and the world of voodoo. You will learn about catastrophic events of a sick child, the marriage of a father to the world of spirits, the difficulty of becoming a Christian, the pain and suffering of a struggle society, and natural disaster. Frantic souls explained the inner nature of life in a dictatorship society. While attempting to share actual events, the author strives not to turn this account into an autobiography. It is rather a series of excerpt from different life incidents that have shaped the character a true believer in Christ. Despite all, the young boy grew up to become a very productive member of society in a distant land.
