Existing urban drainage infrastructure is heavily reliant on current guidelines that govern how infrastructure systems are designed to withstand the potential risk of flooding. However, climate change and an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events have cast doubt on the current methodology and standards for designing urban drainage infrastructure systems. This groundbreaking book, authored by a leading expert in the field, delves into the crucial intersection of urban planning, climate resilience, and infrastructure design. It navigates the complexities of adapting drainage systems to cope with the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. From torrential downpours to rising sea levels, the book offers innovative solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by urban environments in the 21st century. Through meticulous research and practical insights, Resilient Urban Drainage System Strategies for Extreme Weather equips engineers, planners, and policymakers with the knowledge and tools necessary to fortify cities against the impacts of climate change. This book showcases best practices and cutting-edge technologies, empowering readers to implement resilient strategies that safeguard communities, infrastructure, and natural ecosystems. Whether you're a seasoned professional seeking advanced techniques or a newcomer eager to understand the evolving landscape of urban resilience, this guide is an indispensable resource for shaping a sustainable future in an era of unprecedented environmental challenges. Key Features: Promotes the concept of resilient urban drainage system solutions to bridge the critical design gap related to extreme weather due to climate change in the " New Normal" era Discusses a variety of strategic design approaches for large-scale drainage systems, including fail-safe, safe-to-fail, and robust decision making (RDM) Incorporates failure effects into design and management processes while demonstrating alternative solutions to supplement current design methodologies Demonstrates how low-impact development techniques and natural systems can be used to enhance current drainage systems Supplements the existing drainage system design criteria for extreme weather via a simplified approach and advancement of a multi-scalar perspective on resilience WAV offers instructional material for classroom use (lecture slides, exercise solutions, etc.)--available from the Web Added Value(TM) Download Resource Center at jrosspub.com
"There are numerous books on how to improve your communication and leadership skills that are based solely on theory. This is not one of them. This how-to guide employs an empirical approach to meaningful improvement and aims to help you to leverage your own observations, assessments, experiences, and learning experiments, not just ours as the authors. The first section deals with building better behavior-based communication skills, while working on fixing your mental wheel ruts (reinforcing negative behaviors that you find yourself performing over and over again). The communications section details how to listen better, build relationships, give and receive feedback, and mine disagreements for value, among other topics. The second section on leadership describes effective leadership in the virtual environment, building great work teams, and coaching for success. The final section combines your communication and leadership improvement areas into a focused transformation plan. Transformative communication and leadership behaviors involve a commitment to improvement, patience, practice, change, hard work, and small victories in order to reinforce your efforts. However, you have to start somewhere. This is your jumping-off point"--
"Ethics and Responsibilities of Engineers is designed to help students and new practitioners understand from where ethics originate and how they have developed in the profession. It is written to help engineers understand how the coursework they take in school aligns with the public good. What separates this book from others is the focus on the historical development of ethics for the profession and the role played by our educational system, accreditation commissions, and licensing boards. The knowledge and regulatory basis for the engineering occupation permits engineers to comprehend and address (and thereby often avoid) the challenges that might compromise the image of engineers in society. The trust that the public has in their judgment to protect and serve society is what allows engineers to be held in high esteem"--

Nutrient enrichment of lakes is a ubiquitous problem, impacting ecological and human health on a global scale by accelerating the pace of eutrophication, often resulting in algal blooms, depleted dissolved oxygen concentrations, and economic harm to surrounding communities. In many lakes, bed sediments are a major but unrecognized source of phosphorus to the water, a process known as internal phosphorus loading. Internal loading is notoriously difficult to measure and manage given the need to access processes operating on and within the lakebed. In addition, climate change threatens to promote internal loading. For example, warming of lakes can increase the release of phosphorus from sediments due to 1) longer and stronger periods of lake stratification resulting in sediment anoxia and 2) enhanced microbial decomposition of organic matter. Degraded water quality not only impairs ecological health but also can influence social pride and community morale. This is the first book dedicated to the understanding of internal phosphorus loading in lakes and examines the causes, the ecological and societal impacts, and options for managing this complex phenomenon. With contributions from leading experts, this edited volume provides a broad view of internal phosphorus loading, methods for measurement, management practices for water quality improvement, case studies from around the world, and recommendations for addressing this growing concern. It is essential reading for environmental and engineering professionals involved in lake and reservoir management, students and faculty in limnology, state and federal authorities involved in water quality regulation, and lakefront homeowners and management boards interested in maintaining lake water quality and managing algal blooms. Key Features - First-ever comprehensive volume on internal phosphorous loading that clearly details what it is and why it occurs - Identifies and explores the drivers of internal phosphorus loading - Provides methods, techniques, and models for measuring internal phosphorous loading - Features over 150 color figures and photographs to illustrate important concepts and procedures - Includes 17 detailed case studies written by experts from around the world to highlight key research principles, treatment options, and management strategies for major lakes affected by internal phosphorus loading
