What is required to renew and articulate public spaces? The need for, and demands of, public spaces are highly specific to the local spatial and social conditions under which people live. Action at neighborhood level is crucial, and must involve interacting and co-creating with residents to discover their needs. At the start of the pandemic, superwien was commissioned to develop innovative designs for urban public spaces in three different cities: Dhaka (Bangladesh), Maputo (Mozambique), and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). The main objective of this applied research was to strengthen the capacity of local governments to undertake participatory urban design processes. This book calls upon architects and urbanists to develop place-based solutions in challenging circumstances.

"Many would consider a country without building materials uninhabitable." With these words, Minister of Industry Gylfi Þorsteinsson Gíslason opened Iceland's first and only cement plant in 1958. More than a century before, Portland cement was first used as plaster on the walls of the Reykjavík cathedral. At the time, most rural and urban dwellings were still being built from local turf or expensive imported timber. Just a few decades later, Icelandic architects, engineers, and masons were building their country exclusively in concrete. How did this material become so popular that the first decades of the twentieth century are referred to as "the age of concrete"? The Icelandic Concrete Saga focuses on over one hundred years of Icelandic architecture, construction, and technology. It traces the history of an architecture in constant struggle with material scarcity and the natural elements, its outcomes intertwined with Icelandic politics, culture, and society.

Are You a Model? explores the model as architectural tool and practice. The volume approaches architectural models not as categorical objects but through questions such as: What determines a model's functions and agencies? When in the design process does it unfold its power and when has it served its purpose? Based on nine overarching questions, the book brings together interdisciplinary voices from architecture, art history as well as architectural and curatorial practice, and software engineering. 31 contributions interweave perspectives from various disciplines and geographies, and reveal surprising affinities rather than seeking conclusive answers. Models are thus not classified according to time of origin, genre, or material, but rather understood as an epistemologically diverse practice.

What if urban planning and design were to prioritize rather than merely accommodate the unbuilt environment? Territorial Urbanism Now! calls for a paradigm shift in the conception of urban transformation. It urges us to favor sustainable systems in order to collectively tackle the challenges of climate change. After its careful renovation by David Chipperfield Architects, the ballroom Hasenheide 13 will serve as an exhibition venue for the Sammlung Wemhöner from 2025 onwards. The Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv was built in 1936 to designs by architect Dov Karmi for Tony and Max Liebling after they fled from Europe. With its bright plaster facades, deep balconies, clear proportions, and a layout tailored to the regional climate, it serves as a prime example of the locally adapted International Style that is typical of the White City of Tel Aviv. From 2015 to 2019, the building was extensively restored by Israeli and German planners, renovation experts, and craftspersons, reopening as a vibrant exhibition and community center. The Liebling Haus is supported and funded by the German Federal Government, the City of Tel Aviv, and the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Foundation. The book, published in three languages, tells the eventful history of the structure and gathers detailed historical materials about its architecture and residents. Current interviews, an atmospheric tour by Israeli photographer Yael Schmidt, and other documents showcase the new use of the Liebling Haus since its reopening.

Das Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv wurde 1936 nach Entwürfen des Architekten Dov Karmi für das aus Europa geflohene Ehepaar Tony und Max Liebling gebaut. Mit seinen hellen Putzfassaden, tiefen Loggien, klaren Proportionen und einem nach dem Stadtklima ausgerichteten Grundriss ist es ein Paradebeispiel für den lokal angepassten Internationalen Stil, wie er für die Weiße Stadt Tel Aviv typisch ist. Von 2015 bis 2019 wurde es von israelischen und deutschen Planer*innen, Sanierungs-Expert*innen und Handwerker*innen aufwendig restauriert und als lebendiges Ausstellungs- und Nachbarschaftszentrum wiedereröffnet. Artificial neuronal networks open up radical new pathways for image creation. On the basis of textual prompts, machine-learning algorithms like Midjourney and DALL-E generate imagery that is simultaneously familiar and alien. Graphic designer Floyd Schulze uses this rapidly developing technology to recreate architectural icons. In an accompanying essay, Georg Vrachliotis takes up the topic on the theoretical level. OK Computer is the first book to deal with AI-generated architectural imagery from an artistic perspective.

Threatened with demolition and celebrated as icons of brutalism, Gerd and Magdalena Hänska's Mäusebunker and the former Hygieneinstitut designed by Hermann Fehling and Daniel Gogel in Steglitz, Berlin, form a unique ensemble of exceptional buildings. This volume takes as its subjects the different architectural principles underlying the two facing buildings, the intense debate concerning their preservation and reuse, and their economic and cultural value. How can climate change and spatial inequalities be tackled under crisis conditions and in view of limited spatial and other resources? How can we relate our ambitious and broadly defined goals to the reality of local conditions and everyday spaces? How can knowledge be translated into action? While basic spatial relations are currently being renegotiated in cities throughout Europe, it is in Athens that some of the most pressing urban problems have been crystallized in order to establish unique spaces of experimentation. Approaching these multi-dimensional questions from different perspectives, the authors seek to identify possible sites of intervention, suggest new models of transformation, and unleash the potential in urban landscapes as a means of stimulating positive urban change.

Aufgeschlossene Kirchen sind wertvolle öffentliche Räume, die liturgische Orte bleiben und sich gleichzeitig für Neues öffnen können. Infrastructures of Freedom sheds light on the impact of inadequate public lighting in self-built communities in Cape Town. In democratic South Africa, where infrastructure provision still reflects deeply embedded notions of citizenship, informal neighborhoods with minimal infrastructure provision face challenges beyond access to basic services and opportunities. Fear, the feeling of being forgotten, and living in undignified conditions are among the powerful experiences darkness brings about in these neighborhoods. The book not only reveals these experiences of everynight life, but takes a step further: it considers how the co-production of a solar public lighting project within a community improved everynight life and suggests ways for infrastructure to more successfully articulate citizenship. Urbanizing Suburbia considers three current and related processes underway in global cities: the hyper-gentrification of inner cities, the financialization of housing, and the structural changes occurring in the outer city. Rocketing housing prices have displaced residents from inner cities and created a rent gap in outer cities. Increasingly, municipalities, developers, and displaced residents search for opportunities in the suburban belts. Changes in demographics, densities, live/work ratios, and tenures are remaking outer cities, rendering them less and less suburban. The book examines these changes by looking at four key European cities: Amsterdam, Berlin, London, and Stockholm. It is a first attempt at understanding the three processes discussed here within one comprehensive explanatory framework.

Gerda Breuer beleuchtet diesen Kampf um Professionalisierung und zeigt, auf welche kollektiven Formate Designerinnen zurückgriffen, um sichtbar zu werden und sich für die Belange von Frauen einzusetzen. Although public spaces in the former East Germany were elaborately refurbished after reunification, many small towns and villages continue to suffer from population exodus and high vacancy rates. One of those towns is Tribsees in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where 70 of the 240 houses in the downtown area are currently unoccupied. In 2020, a team of artists and students led by Ton Matton engaged with a number of these buildings, sounding out possibilities and concepts for the future of the town in collaboration with residents. This resulted in new narratives of co-existence-involving large amounts of improvisation and not always in adherence to the letter of the law-based on individual responsibility, self-sufficiency, and local production. Slow Urban Planning does more than document this project and its artistic interventions, some of which were implemented in the context of the Tribsees Centenniale. It also illuminates how urban planning processes tend to proceed in general, and how regulatory structures can be adapted in order to better integrate performative processes.
