An innovative visual history of Indian cinema's history, actors, directors, influences and graphic styleIn India, the power of an icon or a holy person is often conveyed by way of sight: one must "behold" the entity in question. This particular import of sight has undoubtedly contributed to cinema's elevated position within Indian culture; the release of a film and the hero-worship of actors in India arouses great fervor. Bollywood Superstars traces the development of Indian cinema from its precedents in the late 19th century to its establishment as a massive industry a century later. Several chapters are dedicated to key figures within this remarkable history, including cinematographer Ravi Varma, producer Dadasaheb Phalke, director Satyajit Ray and the actor Rajinikanth. The volume emphasizes the particular flavor of films produced in different regions: "Kollywood" cinema from Tamil (a mix of comedy, action and emotion), "Bollywood" cinema from Mumbai (musical "masala films") and "Tollywood" cinema from Bengali (critically acclaimed art films). Punctuating this wealth of information are film stills, movie posters, photographs and various artworks that have inspired the country's filmmakers.

Early works by the Lebanese-born painterThe early drawings of Lebanese painter Seta Manoukian (born 1945) reveal a strong and original artistic hand and a keen sense of composition. Of Armenian descent, Manoukian was teaching at Lebanese University when the Civil War began in 1975. After 10 years of war in Lebanon she fled to Los Angeles, where she lives today, as a Buddhist nun. This publication looks back at Manoukian's work, focusing on her work of the 1970s and '80s. It includes essays by Gregory Buchakjian, Kristine Khouri and Aline Manoukian.

A sumptuous visual index of built works by the leading Iraqi architectThe prolific and prominent architect Rifat Chadirji (1926-2020) launched his office Iraq Consult in Baghdad in the late 1950s. In less than 20 years, his design output comprised almost 100 buildings, ranging from monuments and private residences to governmental and industrial buildings in Iraq and the Gulf Region. An avid photographer, Chadirji extensively documented his own architectural projects and the shifting image of Baghdad. Despite his fame, in the climate of suspicion that dominated a heavily policed Iraq, Chadirji was jailed in 1978. He was released two years later and eventually left Iraq in 1983 to devote himself to writing and to cataloging his works. Chadirji's photographs appear on the sheets that form his building index--published for the first time in this book. The index is both a scrupulous inventory of his building career and a testimony to its sudden end.
