  • - Lectures from the Winter School of Theoretical Physics - Proceedings of XXIX Winter School of Theoretical Physics Held in Kudowa Zdroj, Poland, February 15-27, 1993

    744,95 kr.

Between 15 and 27 February 1993, the XXIX Winter School of Theoretical Physics was held in the Hotel Gwarek in Kudowa Zdroj, Poland. The present volume contains the proceedings of the Winter School. In keeping with the name Die Kunst of Phonons, the School was dedicated to the physics of phonons. Historically the field of phonons has been a conglomeration of various directions related only by the fact that phonons were involved. The subject has matured greatly and it is now possible to speak of a field of phonon physics proper. Further, it is possible to speak of many of the phenomena seen in phonon physics as being, truly, beautiful. As the object of the book is to present tutorial reviews of the state of the art (Kunst) together with the fact that the state of the art often times reveals beautiful phenomena (more Kunst) we chose a title that reflected this and was also arresting, forcing the prospective reader to stop and reconsider his preconceptions about phonon physics. The use of the german word (with its echoes of Bach's "die Kunst der Fuge") enhances the effect on the prospective reader.

Because this steroid is alkylated in position 17, toxic effects on liver function can not be excluded. Danazol offers no advantages as compared with other anabolic steroids; rather, disadvantages. Numerous experiments of this type have been performed during the last 40 or 50 years. The outcome in each case was more or less identical: with a certain dose of an androgen or anabolic steroid it is possible to inhibit spermatogenesis without interfering with other androgen-dependent func tions, including libido (potentia coeundi) and accessory sexual glands. On the basis of this pharmacological-endocrinological background, androgens and anabolic steroids can be used for male fertility control, and several clinical trials have been performed during the last 10-15 years. Some of 1 these studies 2-23 are mentioned in Table 2.

Since their introduction to medical practice in 1960, benzodiazepines have become among the most commonly prescribed medications and have, to a great extent, replaced prescriptions of short-acting barbiturates and other sedative-hypnotics. The discovery of their psychoactive properties was almost missed. During a cleaning of their laboratory in April of 1957, Earl Reeder called to Leo Sternbach's attention several hundred milligrams of a substance and its hydrochloride salt they had synthesized in 1955 which had not been submitted for pharmacological testing. They sent the hydrochlor ide salt, later given the generic designation of chlordiazepoxide (Librium), for animal testing to the pharmacology department, which was under the direction of Lowell Randall. Six tests, used for preliminary screening of tranquilizers and sedatives, were conducted. Dr. Randall phoned Dr. Sternbach a few days later to report that the compound possessed interesting psychotropic properties in animals (Sternback. 1983). Subse quently over 3000 1,4 benzo-and heterodiazepines have been synthesized (Sternbach, 1983). and more is known about the mechanism of action of this class of medications than any other psychotropic drug class (Haefely, 1983). Used for treatment of anxiety. insomnia. muscle spasticity, convulsive disorders, anesthesia adjuncts and alcohol detoxification. the benzodiazepines have significant advantages over their predecessor medi cations: the short-acting barbiturates, meprobamate and methaqualone. Of significance is their high lethal/therapeutic ratio. of importance in cases of overdose; their failure to activate liver microsomal enzymes.

Constitutive equations refer to 'the equations that constitute the material response' at any point within an object. They are one of the ingredients necessary to predict the deformation and fracture response of solid bodies (among other ingredients such as the equations of equilibrium and compatibility and mathematical descriptions of the configuration and loading history). These ingredients are generally combined together in complicated computer programs, such as finite element analyses, which serve to both codify the pertinent knowledge and to provide convenient tools for making predictions of peak stresses, plastic strain ranges, crack growth rates, and other quantities of interest. Such predictions fall largely into two classes: structural analysis and manufacturing analysis. In the first category, the usual purpose is life prediction, for assessment of safety, reliability, durability, and/or operational strategies. Some high-technology systems limited by mechanical behavior, and therefore requiring accurate life assess ments, include rocket engines (the space-shuttle main engine being a prominent example), piping and pressure vessels in nuclear and non-nuclear power plants (for example, heat exchanger tubes in solar central receivers and reformer tubes in high-temperature gas-cooled reactors used for process heat applications), and the ubiquitous example of the jet engine turbine blade. In structural analysis, one is sometimes concerned with predicting distortion per se, but more often, one is concerned with predicting fracture; in these cases the informa tion about deformation is an intermediate result en route to the final goal of a life prediction.
