Just prior to the 1982 Annual Meeting of the European Thyroid Association in Brussels, a number of outstanding experts in the field of X-ray fluorescence gathered at the Academisch Ziekenhuis of the Free University of Brussels in a joint effort to more clearly define the actual place and value of the latest newcomer among the techniques available for the in vivo assessment of thyroid function. It is the merit of Prof. M. Jonckheer to have organised this meeting and to have made available the work presented there to a larger public in the form of this monograph. Both, the meeting and the written accounts thereof are greatly appreciated by all thyroidologists who care for properly defining the genuine value of X-Ray fluorescence in scientific research and in clinical management of thyroid disorder. Three main conclusions can be drawn from the work presented 1. X-ray fluorescence has become a safe, convenient and reliable tool for measuring intrathyroidal iodine stores in vivo with an inter-assay reproducibility estimated at roughly 10% 2. X-ray fluorescence, used by expert hands, is a highly interesting tool to follow changes of intra thyroidal iodine stores in time, subsequent e. g. to the exposure of the thyroid gland to excess iodine 3. In contrast, no definite place of X-ray fluorescence as a technique in routine assessment of thyroid disease is yet at the horizon This latter conclusion may appear somewhat disappointing.

This book is a unique work devoted to the subject of disordered defaecation. It contains chapters written by experts in the field of ano-rectal physiology and management of disordered defaecation. The various contributions present personal views and special clinical experience of individuals. There are some personal views which we felt should be commented upon and a few areas where the experience of others has been included into the text. For the sake of completeness of each chapter, a slight overlap in some cases was inevitable. We hope the book will serve as a useful collection of opinions on a subject which until recently has been largely ignored by the medical profession. The editors Major contributors H. In recent years there has been an increasing interest in quantitative analysis of coronary cineangiograms and already for a longer time of left ventricular cin eangiograms. The needfor quantitationofcoronary arterialdimensions has been stimulated by the introduction ofnew therapeutic procedures in the catheteriza tionlaboratory, suchas the balloon dilatationtechnique (PTCA) and thromboly tic therapy, by the need to study the vasoactive responses of pharmaceutical agents, and also by the desire to study the progressive nature ofcoronary artery disease with the ultimate goal to find ways to bring a halt to the progression of coronary atherosclerosis or even achieve regression of the disease. Parallel with these clinical developments, rapid technical developments in computerarchitect ures and semiconductor memories have made it possible to digitize and store cineframesor selected portions thereof in image processors and to analyze these pictorial data quantitatively at affordable prices. More than 15 years of research have been directed by various groups towards the semi- or fully-automated delineation of the left ventricular boundaries on a frame-to-frame basis. Yet not a single system with fully-automated capability is commercially available. In the mean time many different left ventricular wall motion models have been developed, again with little consensuson which model is to be preferred as no golden standard exists.

In the last 15 years we have had the opportunity to teach Electrocardiography to many different types of student: doctors preparing to become cardiologists, cardiologists attending weekly 'refresher' sessions at our hospital, general practitioners who wish to become adept at electrocardiography and attend our yearly courses and, finally, the medical students of the Universidad Aut6noma of Barcelona. We cover everything with these students from the basics of electrophysiology to applied electrocardiographic semiology. This quadruple experience has proved stimulating, constantly motivating the search for better and more precise material, and the most appropriate didactic presentation for each type of student, each of whom has different requirements. I have always felt that didactic capability is not related to the intelligence of the professor, or to the amount of knowledge this person possesses, but really depends on the 'quality' of this knowledge, the 'desire' to transmit it and the 'capacity' to adapt to each teaching situation.

The introduction to this English translation of a selection from Van Vollenhoven's study of indigenous Indonesian law outlines the historical significance of his work, showing its background in the complex administrative and legal system of the Dutch East Indies, the trends in Dutch colonial legal and economic policy, and the development of adat law scholarship from the early 1900s onwards. The chapters chosen concentrate almost entirely on the adat law of some of the indigenous peoples of Indonesia.

J.J. Broerse, Radiobiological Institute TNO, Rijswijk, The Netherlands, and T .J. MacVittie, Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Bethesda, MD, USA. During the past decade, relatively few new studies have been initiated on the response of different species to high-dose, total-body irradia tion. For information on the LDSO/30d (the dose which produces 50 percent lethality within 30 days), one is generally referred to the older literature (e. g., Bond, Fliedner and Archambeau, 1965). Compari son of experimental data reveals considerable variations in LDSD values even after total-body irradiation with conventional X rays, ranging from 4 to 6 Gy in the monkey, 7.1 to 9 Gy in the rat and from 6.4 to 9 Gy in the mouse (see also Hall, 1978). Part of the discrepancy in the LDso values can possibly be attributed to inadequacies in the dosimetry procedures and exposure arrangements employed. As far as clinical experience is concerned, there is now an appreciable amount of information available about the effect of total body irradiation as a conditioning treatment for bone marrow transplan tation in patients suffering from leukaemia or aplastic anaemia. The results from different centres, including the incidence of complications such as radiation pneumonitis, are considerably different. This can part I y be connected with the application of different radiation sched ules: large single dose versus fractionated or protracted irradiation.
