"Rothenberg's poetics of sacred names and numbers is a 'poetics of the sacred.' It intends to re-empower poetry by taking it back to its (presumed) origins. The 'charming' character of his poetry and his 'poetics of the sacred' questions the validity of deconstructionist assumptions in regard to poetry. Alternatively, Rothenberg presents us with a kind of poetry that does not discount the possibility of finding healing and meaning through language."
Poetry. Latin American Studies. Translated from the Spanish by William Rowe. INRI responds to the need to find a language for an event that was kept hidden and excluded from official records in Chile: the fact that the bodies of the disappeared were thrown out of helicopters into the mouths of volcanoes and into the sea. In order to bring this event, that was neither seen nor heard, into language, Zurita invents a form and language capable of bringing it into the present. The one place where these unspeakable acts might be registered is in the landscape of Chile: the mountains, desert, and sea. There the event might begin to be touched, heard, and finally seen. When there are no places from which to speak, "the stones cry out."
Poetry. Translated from the Polish by Piotr Florczyk. Born in Gliwice in 1946, Julian Kornhauser is one of the most acclaimed figures of Polish poetry writing today. A major figure of the New Wave movement of the 1970s, he has published eight books since the mid-1990s. This debut collection of his work in English, which draws exclusively on three recent volumes and presents the poems in a new arrangement, touches upon most, if not all, of Kornhauser's major subject matters, formal strategies, and thematic concerns, giving American readers the opportunity to discover one of Poland's most important contemporary writers in Piotr Florczyk's splendid translations.
