2023 Reprint of the 1927 Edition. In the Belief of Catholics Knox reconstructs the whole edifice of Catholic teaching step by step, from the ground up. He first clears the air by analyzing the modern distaste for religion. Then, with his celebrated insight and flair for the memorable phrase, he throws fresh light on the great fundamental questions on which religious faith stands or falls: Is there a God? Does He care about us? Has He ever revealed Himself? Can we prove that He established a Church? What does that Church teach? What is its spirit? Does it make any claim on our allegiance?Knox was uniquely qualified to write this book, for he understood the difficulties both of Catholics and of non-Catholics, having been an Anglican chaplain at Oxford before he entered the Catholic Church. His keen, questioning mind was never content with any argument that was not airtight, so that even the skeptical inquirer will find this a remarkably reasoned statement of Catholicism. And everyone, Catholic and non-Catholic, will find it clear, stimulating, brilliantly written--a pleasure to read. The Belief of Catholics has been a classic of Catholic Apologetics.
2023 Reprint of the 1922 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This volume comprises volume II in this three-volume series. Professor Wiener, in this second volume of his series Africa and the Discovery of America, deals exhaustively with the documentary information relating to "the presence in America of cotton, tobacco and shell money, before the discovery of America by Columbus. . . The accumulative evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of an introduction of the articles under discussion from Africa by European or Negro traders, decades earlier than 1492." (Foreword, p. ix.) The importance, for the history of Pre-Columbian civilization, of these discoveries cannot be overestimated. Moreover, their significance is not concerned alone with the history of America. They suggest a revision and realignment of historical frontiers in Europe and Africa as well, from a date not later than the first quarter of the fifteenth century. Lastly, Africa and the Discovery of America forms, as it were, a sequel to Professor Wiener's previous scholarship, enabling the historian to trace the influence of the Arabs as the torchbearers of civilization. It was they who in the eighth century, through the medium of the Spanish Mozarabs, recreated European culture, and at a later period, through that of the Arab-Black cultures, of whom the West African Mandingoes were the most important, at least almost entirely recreated, if they did not actually create, the civilization of the native American tribes, throughout both continents, and planted, so to speak, in the New World, the seeds of two great modern industries, cotton and tobacco.
2023 Reprint of the 1946 U.S. Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. In her introduction to the 1974 edition, Joan Quixley, then head of the Nightingale School of Nursing, wrote that despite the passage of time since Notes on Nursing was published, "the book astonishes one with its relevance to modern attitudes and skills in nursing, whether this be practiced at home by the 'ordinary woman', in hospital or in the community. The social, economic, and professional differences of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in no way hinder the young student or pupil from developing, if he or she is motivated to do so, its unchanged fundamentals by way of intelligent thought and practice". "With its mid-nineteenth century background of poverty, neglect, ignorance and prejudice the book was a challenge to contemporary views of nursing, of nurses and of the patient". "The book was the first of its kind ever to be written. It appeared at a time when the simple rules of health were only beginning to be known, when its topics were of vital importance not only for the well-being and recovery of patients, when hospitals were riddled with infection, when nurses were still mainly regarded as ignorant, uneducated persons. The book has, inevitably, its place in the history of nursing, for it was written by the founder of modern nursing". The book included advice and practices for the following areas: ventilation and warming health in houses petty management (how things are done by others when you must be away) noise variety (environment) taking food and what kinds of food bed and bedding light cleanliness of rooms personal cleanliness chattering hopes and advices (the false assurances and recommendations of family and friends to the sick) observation of the sick
2023 Reprint of the 1892 Edition. Spurgeon (1834 - 1892) was a British Baptist preacher who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the "Prince of Preachers". "By April 1891, when Spurgeon addressed the annual conference of the Pastors' College for the last time, he was an experienced and battle-worn soldier. Spurgeon considered it the life-work of a pastor to be engaged in a crusade against error and sin. He fully appreciated what it was to 'fight the good fight of faith'. In The Greatest Fight in the World, this final annual address to his fellow pastors and Pastors' College students, Spurgeon offers practical advice on how to approach the battle. He does so under three martial metaphors: Our Armory (the Scriptures); Our Army (the church); and Our Strength (the Holy Spirit). The Greatest Fight in the World is a book for every pastor. It will stimulate and inspire an approach to the pastoral task which is orderly and intelligent, and which above all recognises and has confidence in the God from whom the strength to engage in battle comes. "General Eisenhower's Chief Historian offers an analysis of the specific psychological realities of combat infantrymen in action. Based upon extensive on-the-spot observations and interrogations, as well as later collations of detailed company reports, this critique examines traditional assumptions about the morale and combat activities of the individual and of small groups of foot-soldiers under fire. Thirteen chapters survey the problems of combat motivation, battlefield isolation, ratio of firing activity, official and informal communication, and leader-follower relationships, as these effect the details of military tactics. Throughout, there is reference to the strengths and weaknesses in human nature as they influence military efficiency. Many episodic accounts from World War II and from military legend and folklore are included." 2023 Reprint of the Selected Essays of Emerson. Included are seven of Emerson's enduring essays: Self-Reliance, Compensation, Spiritual Law, The Over-Soul, Circles, Fate and Success.Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and his ideology was disseminated through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States.
2023 Reprint of an undated U.S. Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The Principia Discordia is the first published Discordian religious text. It was written by Greg Hill (Malaclypse the Younger) with Kerry Wendell Thornley (Lord Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst) and others. The first edition was printed allegedly using Jim Garrison's Xerox printer in 1963. The second edition was published under the title Principia Discordia or How The West Was Lost in a limited edition of five copies in 1965. The phrase Principia Discordia, reminiscent of Isaac Newton's 1687 Principia Mathematica, is presumably intended to mean Discordant Principles, or Principles of Discordance. The Principia describes the Discordian Society and its Goddess Eris, as well as the basics of the POEE denomination of Discordianism. It features typewritten and handwritten text intermixed with clip art, stamps, and seals appropriated from other sources. While the Principia is full of literal contradictions and unusual humor, it contains several passages which propose that there is serious intent behind the work, for example a message scrawled on page 00075: "If you think the PRINCIPIA is just a ha-ha, then go read it again."Notable symbols in the book include the Apple of Discord, the pentagon, and the "Sacred Chao", which resembles the Taijitu of Taoism, but the two principles depicted are "Hodge" and "Podge" rather than yin and yang, and they are represented by the apple and the pentagon, and not by dots. Saints identified include Emperor Norton, Yossarian, Don Quixote, and Bokonon. The Principia also introduces the mysterious word "fnord", later popularized in The Illuminatus!
2023 Reprint of the 1957 Fourth U.S. Edition. Abridged edition by Theodore Graebner. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This work is considered Luther's most comprehensive work on justification by faith. Luther's fundamental belief in justification by faith was formed in large part by his interpretation of Galatians. Combined with the passion and faith expressed in these lectures, the biblical foundation for the crucial doctrine of justification is underscored and expressed for all Protestants. The commentary is also a historical document, a recording of a professor in a classroom in 1531 from July to December of that year, which expresses the Reformer's commitment to the good news of Jesus' death in the sinner's place, challenging the reader/hearer to compare St. Paul's theology with what he or she hears in the church today.
2023 Reprint of the 1930 U.S. Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This books provides the author's interpretation of the structure of Paul's theology. The basic thesis is that to unfold Paul's eschatology is to set forth his theology as a whole, not just his teaching on Christ's return. The author discusses the structure of Paul's eschatology, the interaction between his eschatology and his soteriology, and the religious and ethical motivation of his eschatology. This volume also discusses the coming of the Lord and its precursors, the man of sin, the resurrection, chiliasm, the judgment, and the eternal state. The Pauline Eschatology, originally published in 1930, remains a classic work in this field. Contents:Its structure -- Interaction -- Ethico-religious motivation -- The "coming" and its precursors -- The man of sin -- The resurrection -- Alleged development -- The resurrection-change -- The extent of the resurrection -- The question of chiliasm -- The judgment -- The eternal state
2023 Reprint of the 1953 U.S. Edition. Edited by Johannes G. Vos. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. In this classic work Vos "...challenges classic Liberalism's rejection of Jesus' self-conscious messianic awareness. As Vos sees it, this anti-supernaturalist assessment of the Gospel witness evidences itself in three key assumptions: (1) whatever occurs in history can never be absolutely true or authoritative; (2) all historical events are fundamentally similar and explainable in terms of natural phenomena, and (3) all historical events exist in an interrelated chain of cause and effect so that all events are part of a closed naturalistic system. While the material is somewhat dated, similar arguments put forward on the contemporary scene have already been tried and found wanting by Vos' keen exegetical and theological insight. - Jeff Waddington - Westminster Bookstore StaffPublisher Review:Did Jesus claim to be the Messiah? What Vos discerned in 1926 applies equally to ours: "a certain class of writers" regards with "disfavor ... the Messianic element in the Gospels." 2023 Hardcover Reprint of the 1913 Edition. As a Man Thinketh was first published in 1903. In it, Allen describes how man is the creator and shaper of his destiny by the thoughts which he thinks. We rise and fall in exact accordance with the character of the thoughts which we entertain. Our environment is the result of the thoughts that we harbor and the behavior that our thoughts bring about. Part of the New Thought Movement, Allen reveals the secrets to having the most fulfilling existence possible, guided by a proper understanding and appreciate of how thought shapes our lives. Allen advises on how to better manage our thoughts and how to direct them into more constructive behavior. Though written more than one hundred years ago, the language and resonance of this classic still hold up today, inviting each of us to reflect not on the world and others, but our own thoughts and how to regain their possession. The title for the essay comes from the Bible: "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he," Proverbs, chapter 23, verse 7. In more than a century, As A Man Thinketh has become an inspirational classic, selling millions of copies worldwide and bringing faith, inspiration, and self- healing to all who have encountered it.
2023 Reprint of the 1903 Edition. Thoreau's famous essay was published originally with the title On the Duty of Civil Disobedience, now often referred to as Civil Disobedience. He wrote it as a protest against an unjust but popular war and the immoral but popular institution of slave owning. He did more than write--he declined to pay his taxes and was hauled off to jail as a consequence. Thoreau asserts that because governments are typically more harmful than helpful, they therefore cannot be justified. Democracy is no cure for this, as majorities simply by virtue of being majorities do not also gain the virtues of wisdom and justice. The judgment of an individual's conscience is not necessarily inferior to the decisions of a political body or majority. The government, according to Thoreau, is not just a little corrupt or unjust in the course of doing its otherwise important work, but in fact the government is primarily an agent of corruption and injustice. Because of this, it is "not too soon for honest men to rebel and revolutionize".
2023 Reprint of the 1927 U.S. Edition. Set in 18th century Lima, Peru, a rickety bridge which has spanned a deep gorge for ages suddenly breaks, and five people plunge to their deaths. A priest who is deeply affected by the catastrophe decides to make an investigative study of the lives of the victims to determine if he can find some clue to God's intention in casting five individuals into eternity at precisely the same moment. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928, and was the best-selling work of fiction that year. It has also been made into several movies. It tells the story of several people who die in the collapse of an Inca rope bridge in Peru, and the events that lead up to their being on the bridge. A friar who witnesses the accident then goes about inquiring into the lives of the victims, seeking some sort of cosmic answer to the question of why each had to die."One of the greatest reading novels in this century's American writing... Wonderfully lucid reading." Edmund Fuller "A remarkably confident evocation of the secret springs of half a dozen men, women and children..." Clifton Fadiman
2023 Reprint of the 1925 U.S. Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Born in 1874 as the youngest daughter of a samurai and former daimyo-a feudal prince under shogunate rule-the author grew up surrounded by ghosts of an aristocratic military lineage. Having fought on the losing side in the wars that installed the Meiji emperor, her family was reduced in power, status, and wealth but not in pride or, nor in devotion to its traditional roles and customs. Etsu's upbringing and education were conservative and old-fashioned, guided by the Shinto and Buddhist beliefs held by her family. The samurai virtues of honor, stoicism, and sacrifice applied to daughters and wives as well as sons and fathers: "The eyelids of a samurai know not moisture." Family turmoil, including her father's death and the return of her prodigal brother, led her on another path-to an English-language mission school in Tokyo and an arranged marriage to a Japanese businessman in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she became mother to two daughters before being widowed and returning with them to Japan. Her story, as she tells it, is: "How a daughter of feudal Japan, living hundreds of years in one generation, became a modern American." The clash of cultures, the momentous and sometimes hilarious misunderstandings between Japanese and Western ways are revealed in intriguing intimate episodes involving love, duty, and family ties. Living between a semi-mythical past and an emergent international present, Mrs. Sugimoto recounts the personal impact of the profound social changes brought about by Japanese American relations during the Meiji period (1868-1912) and offers an unexpected insider's view of traditional Japanese samurai family life as it is in the process of being swept away.
2023 Reprint of the 1944 edition. Originally published in 1903, this a reprint of the 1944 edition published by the Newman Bookshop. Fr. Cajetan Mary da Bergamo was a Franciscan friar who became known in the eighteenth century as a theologian who produced many volumes of writings on a wide range of religious subjects. He is best remembered for his book Humility of Heart, a storehouse of wisdom for Catholics regarding the importance of humility in any spiritual undertaking. Examples of his wisdom are: "It is only by the measure of your humility that thou canst hope to please God and save thyself, because it is certain that God 'will save the humble of spirit." "As paradise is only for the humble, therefore in paradise everyone will have more or less glory according to his degree of humility.""Humility generates confidence, and God never refuses His grace to those who come to Him with humility and trust." These are only a few samples of the gems of wisdom contained in Humility of Heart. Fr. Cajetan da Bergamo has assembled in this Catholic classic every conceivable motive for us to practice the virtue of humility. From every direction, provides reasons why this virtue is paramount in the lives of all Saints and of all those on the way to spiritual realization. As no one will enter Heaven who is not perfect and as no one will gain perfection who is not humble, it behooves us all to apprise ourselves of the requisites for gaining true humility of heart, for once possessing this virtue, we can then make great strides in other aspects of spiritual life. But without it, we are simply deceiving ourselves regarding our spiritual progress and postponing the great work of our own spiritual pursuits.

Rufus Matthew Jones was an American religious leader, writer, magazine editor, philosopher, and college professor. One of the most influential Quakers of the 20th century, he was a Quaker historian and theologian as well as a philosopher. The essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson introduced Jones to the idea of George Fox as one of a great historical succession of mystics. This revelation changed Jones's conception of his family's religion. From the writings of the early Quakers, Jones crystallized the concept of the 'inner light," an idea central in particular to modern liberal Quakerism. "The Inner Light is the doctrine that there is something Divine, 'Something of God' in the human soul," he wrote. This inner light was something integral to the human condition, irrespective of a person's religious conviction. He upheld that God is a personal being with whom human beings could interact. He wrote in The Trail of Life in the Middle Years, "The essential characteristic of [mysticism] is the attainment of a personal conviction by an individual that the human spirit and the divine Spirit have met, have found each other, and are in mutual and reciprocal correspondence as spirit with Spirit."

Ibn Battutah - ethnographer, biographer, anecdotal historian and occasional botanist - was just twenty-one when he set out in 1325 from his native Tangier on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He is perhaps the greatest medieval Muslim traveler and the author of one of the most famous travel books, the Ri¿lah (Travels). His great work describes his extensive travels covering some 75,000 miles (120,000 km) in trips to almost all of the Muslim countries and as far as China and Sumatra (now part of Indonesia). In this travel narrative he writes of his adventures along the way, and comes across as a superb ethnographer, biographer, anecdotal historian and occasional botanist and gastronome. He was attacked by bandits, almost drowned in a sinking ship, and nearly beheaded by a tyrant ruler. He also had a few marriages and lovers and fathered several children on his travels.

Rudolf Hoess [also Höss] was a German SS officer during the Nazi era who, after the defeat of Nazi Germany, was convicted for war crimes. He was the longest-serving commandant of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp (from 4 May 1940 to November 1943, and again from 8 May 1944 to 18 January 1945). He tested and implemented means to accelerate Hitler's order to systematically exterminate the Jewish population of Nazi-occupied Europe, known as the Final Solution. On the initiative of one of his subordinates Hoess introduced the pesticide Zyklon B to be used in gas chambers, where more than a million people were killed. Hoess was hanged in 1947 following a trial before the Polish Supreme National Tribunal. During his imprisonment, at the request of the Polish authorities, he wrote his memoirs, released in English under the title Commandant of Auschwitz: The Autobiography of Rudolf Hoess. Like most things in his life, Hoess undertook the autobiography with great diligence. A careful checking by researchers showed he took great pains to tell the truth. The result: a vivid and unforgettable picture of the 20th century's defining and most horrific event.
2023 Reprint of the 1927 U.S. Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "Anthropology is a science whose most significant discoveries have come when it has taken its bearings from literature, and what makes Paul Radin's Primitive Man as Philosopher a seminal piece of anthropological inquiry is that it is also a book of enduring wonder. Writing in the 1920s, when anthropology was still young, Radin set out to show that "primitive" cultures are as intellectually sophisticated and venturesome as any of their "civilized" counterparts. The basic questions about the structure of the natural world, the nature of right and wrong, and the meaning of life and death, as well as basic methods of considering the truth or falsehood of the answers those questions give rise to, are, Radin argues, recognizably consistent across the whole range of human societies. He rejects both the romantic myth of the noble savage and the rationalist dismissal of the primitive mind as essentially undeveloped, averring that the anthropologist and the anthropologist's subject meet on the same philosophical ground, and only when that is acknowledged can anthropology begin in earnest. The argument is clearly and forcibly made in pages that also contain an extraordinary collection of poems, proverbs, myths, and tales from a host of different cultures, making Primitive Man as Philosopher not only a lasting contribution to the discipline of anthropology but a unique, rich, and fascinating anthology, one that both illuminates and enlarges our imagination of the human" From description taken from NYRB Classics (February 21, 2017).Contents:Part 1: Man and Society -- II. What Christian doctrine has more far reaching consequences than that of the Incarnation of the Son of God? Intimately associated with this mystery is the divine motherhood of the Blessed Virgin. Its profound depths and lofty heights have never been more thoroughly studied than by the renowned Theologian who is the author of this book. Mary's place in the divine scheme of our redemption is one of the great mysteries of our faith. In penetrating this religious mystery, the human mind reaches limits beyond which it cannot go. But the region this side of such limits is exhaustively explored in MARIOLOGY.Devotion to the Mother of God appears early in the history of the Church and has grown century after century. Here, in MARIOLOGY, we find explained the doctrinal basis and justification of for the importance of Mary. Scheeben is one of the few men who deserve to be called great theologians. His extensive familiarity with the writings of the Church Fathers, which are the background of his theological thinking, makes him a reliable witness to the cumulative testimony of tradition. Then he further elaborates this patristic evidence. But Scheeben does not ignore the scholastic theologians, adducing again and again the reasoning and the very words of St. Thomas Aquinas. These two traits, dependence on the Fathers And his own development of their teaching, is strikingly evident in his MARIOLOGY, the second volume of which is devoted entirely to a study of Mary's fullness of grace and her office of Mediatrix. With admirable completeness he treats the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, the proof of it, and the significance of the controversy about it.This second volume contains an index to both volumes.Whoever wishes to be fully instructed about the greatness of the Blessed Virgin will not fail do study Scheeben's MARIOLOGY.Contents: Contents: v. 1. 2023 Reprint of the 1927 edition. The subject of this brilliant novel is the daily life of an English family in the Hebrides. "There are dozens of passages in which the secret relations of men and women, especially women, to the trifling events of life are rendered with convincing and elaborate subtlety. To have written them is to have surpassed, in this one respect, almost every contemporary novelist."-The Saturday Review "Virginia Woolf stands as the chief figure of modernism in England and must be included with Joyce and Proust in the realization of experimental achievements that have completely broken with tradition.-New York Times "To the Lighthouse is one of the greatest elegies in the English language, a book which transcends time." -Margaret Drabble "Without question one of the two or three finest novels of the twentieth century. Woolf comments on the most pressing dramas of our human predicament: war, mortality, family, love. If you're like me you'll come back to this book often, always astounded, always moved, always refreshed." -Rick Moody "[Woolf's] people are astoundingly real...The tragic futility, the absurdity, the pathetic beauty, of life-we experience all of this in our sharing of seven hours of Mrs. Ramsay's wasted or not wasted existence. We have seen, through her, the world." -Conrad Aiken
