This study is essentially about culture and culture change in Bakundu society. Culture and culture change have assumed a new importance in recent years with the coming of globalisation, giving currency to phrases like "culture wars" and most famously, Huntington's "clash of civilisations", the latter symbolised by the current confrontations between radical Islam and a post-Christian, post-modern secular West. This work examines the various dimensions of change in Bakundu belief system and practices. It shows how the process of modernization became irreversible because it was eventually embraced and sustained by new social classes which emerged through elite formations like the Bakundu Students' Union.
This is a major contribution to discourses on marginality. Essays in this rich collection discuss marginality from a variety of analytical positions ranging from disciplines such as Postcolonial and English Literature, Gender studies, and International relations to Philosophy, Film, Diaspora studies and Languages.
The author has remarkably made a long and tortuous story short and simple without smothering complexities. His grasp of the travails of the continent is impressive, so is his objectivity and even handedness. His literary style is crisp and a sheer delight. His study is not intended to portray Africa as in a state of dystopia as most works do... This book should be amongst the prized collections of any library worth its salt on African issues. Canute A. Ngwa, Ph.D.
At a time when many African countries are dreaming and strategising for economic emergence in the arena of global development, this book is a welcome reminder of the need to take on board the language factor as a central element in the social, economic and political transformations that characterise development in the twenty first century: the age of knowledge economy. Beban Sammy Chumbow Emeritus Professor, University of Yaounde 1
Power and Marginality in Contemporary Cameroonian Orature is an important book in the development of Cameroon literary criticism with reference to orature. With a particular accent on popular songs/ protest music, Professor Emeritus Kashim Ibrahim Tala's perceptive analysis invites the readers to see the socio-economic inequities of the Cameroonian society, its material/historical reality. If one adds this significant critical work on orature to the existing major critical works on written Cameroon literature in English, one comes close to having a comprehensive picture of Anglophone Cameroon literary criticism as exists today. It is a text that every student, researcher, and scholar of Cameroon literature should possess. Professor Shadrach Ambanasom, The University of Bamenda
This book contributes to a better understanding of the agricultural activities of the people as those who consume their products in the cities can find in it knowledge of how what they consume is produced. It is also a useful tool for those scholars who are interested in learning about the traditions and culture of this society. This kind of record also makes a significant contribution by proposing new ways for farmers to improve on their activities and move towards better standards of living. There are certainly shortcomings in this book for which the authors accept responsibility and would welcome criticisms and suggestions for improvement. Pius W. Akumbu, PhD University of Buea
... The author brings together for the first time seven major anti-establishment Anglophone Cameroon poets who display a vivid sense of history and have a clear conception of their country and the way they want that country to go... Because all the seven poets are active participants in the drama of social and political change in Cameroon, each poet in his own way has examined the crisis of nationhood and proposed the methods by which Cameroon as a nation can be saved from the brink of perdition. Kashim Ibrahim Tala (PhD) Emeritus Professor of Literature & Eco-culture This is a landmark contribution to Postcolonial Anglophone literary criticism. Labang's invigorating criticism is a living testimony of the orchestrated symptoms of unpatriotic leadership which has deferred the historic destiny of the revered spirit of Nationalism inspired in the 1960s and early 70s. To the researcher, the scholar and the student teacher, this book is a springboard and will provide insight into the provocative debates surrounding nationhood and nationalism in contemporary Postcolonial African and Anglophone Cameroon Literature. Dr. David Toh Kusi University of Yaounde I (ENS)
"Professor Shadrach A. Ambanasom has... published widely on all aspects of Anglophone writing in Cameroon." Emma Dawson, General Editor, World Englishes Literature "Anglophone Cameroon's foremost literary critic and unforgettable source of inspiration" Tangyie Suh-Nfor (Critic) The value of Perspectives on Written Cameroon Literature in English is broader and profounder than I felt on first reading... The care for le mot juste and beautiful phrasing remains a typicality of Ambanasom. N. Patrick Tata, PATAMAE Editing Consultancy
In her other multiple works, scientific articles in particular, and above all in her book "The Feminization of Poverty in Cameroon", (Yaoundé Clé, 2009); this brilliant sociologist gratified the scientific community with her salient analyses on the necessity to reduce or to eradicate poverty that is currently plaguing women in Cameroon; women whose socio-economic needs are as a matter of fact identical to or at least parallel to those of all human beings.
