Engineering managers and professionals make a long and lasting impact in the industry by regularly developing technology-based projects, as related to new product development, new service innovation or efficiency-centered process improvement, or both-to create strategic differentiation and operational excellence for their employers. They need certain business fundamentals that enable them to make decisions, based on both technologyand business perspectives, leading to new or improved product or service offerings, which are technically feasible, economically viable, marketplace acceptable, and customer enlightening. This book consists of three sets of business fundamentals. The chapter"Cost Accounting and Control" discusses service and product costing, activity-based costing to define overhead expenses, and risk analysis andcost estimation under uncertainty. The chapter "Financial Accounting and Analysis" delineates the key financial statements, financial analyses, balancedscorecard, ratio analysis, and capital asset valuation-including operations, opportunities, and acquisition and mergers. The chapter "Marketing Management"reviews marketing functions, marketing forecasting, marketing segmentation, customers, and other factors affecting marketing in making value-adding contributions. The new business vocabulary and useful analysis tools presented will enable engineering managers to become more effective when interacting with senior management, and to prepare themselves for assuming higher-level corporate responsibilities.
Many countries use the International Accounting Standards issued by the IFRS Foundation. This is a not-for-profit international organization that has developed a single set of high-quality global accounting standards. These standards can be complex, but this book clearly explains the main requirements.
The purpose of this book is to provide an introduction to this set of technologies to teach a new programmer how to get started creating data-driven websites and to provide a jumping-off point for the reader to expand his or her skills. Today's modern world is heavily dependent on the World Wide Web. It affects the way we communicate, how we shop, and how we learn about the world. Every website, every page, consists of four fundamental elements: the structure, the style, the programming, and the data. These correspond to four different "languages," respectively: HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL. After learning the necessary components, users will have the understanding required to use the above technologies to create a working website. This book is aimed at the programmer or student who understands the basic building blocks of programming such as statements and control structures but lacks knowledge of the syntax and application of the above-mentioned technologies.
Engineers and technologists often operate from a worldview of "e;ones and zeros."e; The mission of this book is to interject the colorful world of creative thinking to help engineers and technologists learn to think and work differently. Thus, "e;idea engineering"e; becomes the driving force, transforming engineers and technologists into innovators and entrepreneurs, using case studies and anecdotes from first-hand experience. The material in this book is organized to take the reader through basic concepts and techniques of creative thinking and innovation, to better solve engineering and technological challenges. It provides an overall understanding of who, what, why, when, and how "e;idea engineering"e; can transform an individual and a company to formulate and apply the best possibilities. The target audience is university-level students and practitioners, especially upper division undergraduates and graduate students in engineering education, industrial engineering, engineering technology, science, and technology; and then engineering practitioners from an engineering, technology, or science background. It can be purchased individually as a text, professional trade or reference title, or accessed within a collection libraries and professional organizations would buy. In addition, the material in this book can supplement coursework in business, communication, management, and applied creative arts. As a core or supplemental text, it would make a great foundation for a one-credit course-or a part of any three-credit capstone design course or seminar-stressing creative thinking and innovation. It would also be a good overview for any layman interested in learning about creative thinking and innovation.
X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) is a well-established analytical technique for qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of a wide variety of routine quality control and research samples. Among its many desirable features, it delivers true multi-element character analysis, acceptable speed and economy, easy of automation, and the capacity to analyze solid samples. This remarkable contribution to this field provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of basic principles, recent developments, instrumentation, sample preparation procedures, and applications of XRF analysis. If you are a professional in materials science, analytic chemistry, or physics, you will benefit from not only the review of basics, but also the newly developed technologies with XRF. Those recent technological advances, including the design of low-power micro- focus tubes and novel X-ray optics and detectors, have made it possible to extend XRF to the analysis of low-Z elements and to obtain 2D or 3D information on a micrometer-scale. And, the recent development and commercialization of bench top and portable instrumentation, offering extreme simplicity of operation in a low-cost design, have extended the applications of XRF to many more analytical problems.
This book introduces you to the classical methods of precipitation modeling and to recently developed advanced, computationally-efficient techniques.Over recent decades, modeling and simulation of solid-state precipitation has attracted increased attention in academia and industry due to their important contributions in designing properties of advanced structural materials and in increasing productivity and decreasing costs for expensive alloying. In particular, precipitation of second phases is an important means for controlling the mechanical-technological properties of structural materials. However, profound physical modeling of precipitation is not a trivial task. This book introduces you to the classical methods of precipitation modeling and to recently developed advanced, computationally-efficient techniques. If you're a research professional, academic, or student, you'll learn: * nucleation theory, precipitate growth, calculation of interfacial energies. * advanced techniques for technologically relevant multi-component systems and complex thermo-mechanical treatments.* numerical approaches using evolution equations and discrete particle size distributions.* the major software products available for precipitation kinetics simulations.
This book offers detailed case studies on how various industries have learned how to best allocate their resources-technical, human, and nancial-for enhancing productivity. It includes efforts to improve resource utilization from around the world. Case studies cover topics ranging from distributed virtual manufacturing enter-prises to integrating green technology in a cost-effective manner to materials and energy savings. Resources Utilization and Productivity Enhancement Case Stud-ies explores how energy-ef cient smart materials and structures hold tremendous potential for realizing cost savings and improving energy use in the modern industrial workplace. It also shows how industrial engineers have developed a variety of analytical and computer-based tools and technologies for planning, forecasting, and schedul-ing resources-including time, labor, and more recently, energy.
Microarray Analysis is a natural outgrowth of the author's teaching and research into the ¿ eld of microarray processing, a fast growing and developing ¿ eld. There has been a reduction in the genominomics of sequencing of DNA and proteins: from $3 billion in HGP costs down to $1000 per genome in 2014 using next-generation sequencers.Different sequencing methods in place and various applications of these methods are illustrated. Commercially available Next-Generation Sequencers are compared side-side by side. This book will show how the biochemical reactions involved in the different steps of the cure process can be studied using microarray methods. Examples will be provided throughout the text of various disease states, including the spread of cystic ¿ brosis in children, consanguineous marriages in Saudi Arabia, genetic disorders, and autoimmune disorders. The protocols from sample preparation to confocal scanning microscopy and detectors using photo multiplier tubes to statistical data analysis methods will be discussed in detail. The Polymerase chain reaction, a technique used to amplify and simultaneously quantify a targeted DNA molecule is explored in relation to the best surface to be used for Microarray Analysis. Sanger sequencing, sequencing by synthesis, sequencing by ligation, single molecule sensing, DNA passage through nanopores in graphene are some methods used for obtaining sequence distribution information.
