The second volume of the Finnish course introduces the learner to structures needed in writing, as well as speech, especially the use of participles and infinitives as substitutes for various subordinate clauses. Dialogs and narratives are without English translations and the number of new words listed for each chapter has been somewhat reduced.

This beginning language learning course consists of two textx. The basic text, Catchphrase 1 includes 209 lesson units, each containing a dialog or a portion of a dialog, explanations of the main patterns used, and carefully graded excercises. A comprehensive appendix provides answer keys, a glossary, and an index. The supplementary text, Welsh 1 ABC, summarizes language patterns used in everyday speech.

This practical course in modern Finnish was developed by Maija-Hellikki Aaltio, of the Helsinki University. The introductory level course uses two books: one provides transcripts of the Finnish dialogs with idiomatic English translations, notes on structural pattern and explanations of essential points of grammar; the other provides a variety of exercises with instructions in English.
