The present volume marks the bimillennium of the death of the princeps with a selection of essays that offer new approaches to the Emperor Augustus and his reign. The essays cover a variety of subjects related to Augustan scholarship from a twenty-first century perspective. The studies brought together in this volume are based on papers delivered and discussed by archaeologists, philologists, and historians of ancient Rome at the conference on 'XIV A.D. SAECVLVM AVGVSTVM. The Age of Augustus' held in Lisbon (the Roman Olisipo) in September 2014. The title, Augustan Papers, is intended to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the publication of Ronald Syme's Roman Papers (1939).

Mamayh ar-Rumi ad-DimaSqi was one of the most significant Damascan poets in the 10th/16th century, whose verses were sung from Damascus to Yemen. Based on the current results of the ongoing edition of Mamayh's diwan (Rawdat al-muStaq wa-bahgat al-'uSSaq "Garden of the ardent yearner and the joy of the lovers") this study discusses a selection of poems in which the poet converses with the literary past by not only using mimetic and emulative techniques (like tadmin, iqtibas, and tahmis poems) but also through the use of more modern styles, forms and topics (like 'atil verses, coffee poems, and vernacular poems). While the mimetic poems refer directly to the admired or canonized models of the past perpetuating the tradition into the poet's present, the focus of the contemporary topics in the diwan is on how the poet's present is connected to the poetic and aesthetic practices of the past. With the analysis of Mamayh's poetry, the study offers evidence of the impressive literary and intellectual background of an initially Ottomanized and then 'Syrianized' (former soldier-) poet, as well as his tremendous poetic creativity in melding together the 'old' and the 'new' in his verse.

Globalisierung ist kein modernes Phänomen, sondern so alt wie die Menschheit selbst. Die Begegnung mit anderen Kulturen spielt dabei eine zentrale Rolle: Die Art und Weise, wie Individuen und Gesellschaften darauf reagieren, ermöglicht uns nicht nur tiefe Einblicke darin, wie andere Kulturen wahrgenommen werden, sondern auch in das eigene Selbstverständnis.Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht genau diese interkulturellen Begegnungen in einer Zeit, die als eine der einflussreichsten Epochen der Globalisierung im modernen Sinn gilt: die Frühe Neuzeit in England. Am Beispiel von sechs ausgewählten Stücken William Shakespeares (Titus Andronicus, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, Cymbeline und The Tempest) wird die Entwicklung der Darstellung dieser Begegnungen in drei Phasen nachgezeichnet, die durch die Ausrichtung der zentralen Grenzüberschreitung (transgression, presence und inversion) definiert wird. Diese Entwicklung reflektiert, so die Leitthese der Arbeit, die soziokulturellen Diskurse der Entstehungszeit der Stücke, welche zu verstehen helfen, wie Prozesse der frühneuzeitlichen Globalisierung aufgegriffen, fort- und umgeschrieben sowie mitgestaltet wurden.

This book explores how contemporary American novelists express the malaise and sense of contingency felt in the crisis-ridden historical present through two distinct tropes in their storytelling:home and mobility.As the American nation has been confronted with an unprecedented accumulation of crises in the years since 9/11, the interrelated concepts of home and mobility have entered plots in imaginative and unique ways. This study focuses on recent novels by Paul Auster (Sunset Park), Cormac McCarthy (The Road), Dave Eggers (A Hologram for the King), Richard Ford (The Lay of the Land and Let Me Be Frank with You) and Emily St. John Mandel (Station Eleven). Crises can happen at any moment, without much warning- as the recent shock of the pandemic has made all too clear-and the works of fiction by these five authors all explore this underlying sense of threat and uncertainty through the double prism of home and mobility. The book includes excerpts from exclusive interviews with four of these authors

Armand Petitjean (1913-2003), the author of this unpublished essay, was an intellectual and critic whose work has not yet received full recognition for its depth and significance. Between 1933 and 1935 Petitjean produced a typescript in English called Essay on the Situation of Joyce, which Joyce himself described as "an amazing study of W[ork]. I[n]. P[rogress]". Petitjean frequented James Joyce in Paris and played a rather important role in the latter's life until Joyce's death in 1941.This edition contains an introduction which outlines the genesis of the Essay and the connected dealings of its author with important figures from the French literary scene of the 1930s. Along with other sources, this section relies upon numerous unpublished letters from Petitjean and Joyce's international milieu. This bibliographical guide gives a comprehensive overview of the historiography of philosophy and thought in the Japanese language through an extensive and thematically organized collection of relevant literature. Comprising over one thousand entries, the bibliography shows not only how extensive and complex the Japanese tradition of philosophical and intellectual historiography is, but also how it might be structured and analyzed to make it accessible to a comparative and intercultural approach to the historiography of philosophy worldwide. The literature is categorized and organized according to thematic focus areas such as geographical regions and continents, nations and peoples, religious traditions and philosophical teachings such as Buddhism, Islam, Shinto, or Confucianism, as well as disciplines such as ethics, aesthetics, or political thought. The bibliography is accompanied by an introduction outlining the research method as well as quantitative and qualitative approaches to analyzing the material, followed by a chronological overview of the historiography of philosophy and thought in the Japanese language as well as of the Japanese tradition of writing "world histories of philosophy". As a first step towards a "history of the historiography of philosophy" in non-European languages, the guide provides useful tools for interculturally oriented scholarship aimed at a non-Eurocentric and diversified historiography of philosophy in a global perspective.
