In this book, Windy Dryden outlines the fundamentals of single-session therapy (SST) and the dynamics of procrastination. He presents and discusses transcripts of single sessions he conducted with volunteers from Onlinevents who were seeking help with problems with procrastination. Each volunteer presents a reflection on their session several months later and in the final chapter, Windy Dryden brings together the themes that emerge from volunteers' reflections. The book shows how people experience single-session therapy and what they can achieve from it.
In this book, Windy Dryden explains why he now refers to the single-session therapy work that he does as ONEplus therapy. Two consistent themes that run through the book are that help is best provided at point of client need and that while therapist and client agree to work together to provide the help the client wants in one session (the ONE in ONEplus therapy), further help is available on request (the plus in ONEplus therapy). In the first part of the book, Windy details what a therapist needs to do to become a ONEplus (SST) therapist. In discussing the knowledge that a trainee needs, he places the ONEplus (SST) therapy mindset at the heart of this part of the training process. Then, he discusses the general skills that trainees need to acquire to practise effectively in this area. Next, he outlines the different forms of supervision available to trainee and trained ONEplus (SST) therapists. In the second part of the book, Windy discusses what independent practitioners and therapy agencies need to do to lay the foundations for the practice of ONEplus (SST) therapy. In the next part, Windy discusses the practice of ONEplus therapy and presents the specific skills associated with the effective practice of ONEplus therapy that stem from the mindset discussed previously. In doing so, Windy adopts a process view outlining the skills needed to begin the process, facilitate change and to bring the session to a successful conclusion. In the final part of the book, Windy makes the point that different therapists will be informed by different ideas in their practice of ONEplus (SST) therapy and discusses the 30 ideas that inform his practice in this area. While Windy Dryden has published several books on SST, ONEplus Therapy: Help at the Point of Need is perhaps the book that best captures his personal views and idiosyncratic practice of this exciting form of therapy delivery as well as providing the core text for his Certificate in SST courses.
