I.A.A.Thompson, Emeritus Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, is the author of War and Government in Habsburg Spain, a seminal study of the impact of war on the development of the state in Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries. In this volume he reprints for an English readership ten essays examining the implications for government, the financial system and Spain's position in Europe of the fundamental changes in the art and practice of war, both on land and at sea, that took place during this period. This "Military Revolution" has been one of the most contentious debates among historians for the last fifty years, but little attention has so far been paid to Spain itself, despite her predominance in Europe for much of the period. These essays are designed to correct that omission, and to assist in a fuller understanding both of the Military Revolution and of the strengths and weaknesses of the Spanish state.

The town of Kearsley, between Bolton and Manchester, has a rich and fascinating history. With around 500 pictures and 70,000 words this book attempts to convey how it has grown from a sparsely populated area comprising of no more than a few dozen farms and cottages to the busy and industrious town of today.Early township records show many interesting details, such as land ownership and how relief was administered to the poor and needy, but also how some unfortunate souls were removed to the dreaded workhouse. The earliest known written record of Kearsley is also shown which dates from around the year 1222, and special permission had to be granted for it to be photographed for reproduction in this book.Kearsley and the surrounding area became a hotbed for manufacturing as the industrial revolution took hold, with many factories and mills springing up, particularly beside the overworked River Irwell. There are numerous pictures, maps and documents to illustrate how these developed then declined during the twentieth century as post war Britain could no longer compete in these traditional industries. The coal industry is described along with its dangers, and details of several local mining disasters are given. A large section is dedicated to the Unity Brook colliery disaster, which to this day remains as the single worst tragedy in the history of Kearsley. Unique pictures that were drawn by a local artist at the scene of the disaster during the rescue operation have been uncovered and feature in this compelling section as well as evidence from the inquests that followed. There is a wealth of information on the schools, Churches, public houses, roads, bridges, tram-systems, railways, canals, farms and the former Kearsley Power Station. The neighbouring towns of Farnworth and Clifton are also largely featured, as is the district once referred to as Halshaw Moor, which took in parts of both Kearsley and Farnworth. Again, there are numerous rare and unique pictures, maps and documents to accompany all of these chapters and areas.

Europeans and Americans, and especially Western students, know very little, if anything, about Africa and its extraordinary political leaders. At the Institute of Political Science, in the political leadership courses, the focus is on the great political leaders who shaped world history, such as Niccolo Machiavelli, Napoleon Bonaparte, Abraham Lincoln, John Kennedy, Vladimir Lenin, etc. No one is mentioned on the continent of Nelson Mandela, Patrice Lumumba, Soundiata Keita, Leopold Senghor and Mansa Kanga Mousa. The latter, king of the kings of Mali from 1312 to 1337, an empire in West Africa, is considered the richest man in human history."Political Leadership in Africa" is a series of books that shine a light on extraordinary African political leaders, so that people around the world, especially politicians, journalists and students, will pay new attention to Africa, its history and its people.Indeed, Patrice Emery Lumumba "Ahead of His Time" is the first volume in the series. This book is a detailed political analysis of an extraordinary politician, who became prime minister when the Democratic Republic of Congo gained its independence in 1960. Although his life was cut short, Patrice Lumumba was undoubtedly an exceptional political leader. The consequences of the events that led to the liberation of the Democratic Republic of Congo would have been profoundly different without his impact on the political outcome. He is now described as a hero, a martyr, a prophet and the Abraham Lincoln of African politics.

The true story of flesh and blood individuals laid to rest in the tobacco fields of Erie County, or floating down the Niagara river. It is a mesmerising tale about somewhat ordinary people doing extraordinary things in a quite ordinary way! True stories within a story unfurl in this beautiful and often amusing account of a curiously powerful and changing love that refuses to be quashed or compromised. In this, his sixth book, novelist, poet and former singer, Ricky Dale, surpasses all mainstream 'stick-in-the-mud' writing and takes the reader to where you haven't been a thousand times before."If anyone can evoke both the psychological depths and surface mannerisms in all of his many characters, it is Ricky Dale."- Walter Parks Thatcher"I am positive that anyone who begins to read this book will quickly fall under its spell and find some kind of kinship with many of its characters. Therein lies much of the book's charm."- C.Foster, NY Inquirer
