"As a child I would stand in the mirror and do something that I didn't realize was the driving force behind my survival from rejection. I affirmed myself and spoke many of my accomplishments into existence. But, at that time, I had not dealt with negative words planting weeds in my thoughts that over time started would choke out the good thoughts." Author Anita Wilson says she penned this body work to help women and men flush out negative words, thoughts and limiting beliefs and move from brokenness to wholeness. Wilson is on a mission who believe they have a unique calling in their life to strive to reach their full potential to fulfill their purpose. Wilson says, "You can use all of your trials and tribulations as stepping stones to rise above them."

Have you ever wondered why an educational industry dominated by women has a significantly low number of women in leadership? And have you ever wondered why these numbers are especially low for women of color? Women are entrusted with the care, nourishment, and development of our most precious customers, our children. Society has created a frame that women are caregivers, nurturers, and the primary bearers of raising the next generation but history and experiences have taught us that these same characteristics lauded as essential in the raising of our generations somehow cannot be translated to effective leadership. Countless policies, unwritten rules, practices, and experiences have paved a way for mistreatment, misogyny, and racism to seep into the educational system perpetuating a patriarchal environment and closing the door to access and opportunities for women in educational leadership. Women make up more than 80% of teachers in the education field, yet less than 33% of them are in district leadership positions such as executive directors and school superintendents. And these numbers are dismal for women of color with only 5% percent of Black women are in leadership positions. Traditionally, women were relegated to classroom positions or quasi-leadership roles within the school or district offices, with men acquiring leadership positions. We have all heard similar stories of former sports coaches ascending the ranks of leadership to become the school principal and then eventually the superintendent with little teaching experience. Today, these high-level positions continue to be dominated by white males and in school districts predominantly enrolled with Black and Latinx students. Unwrapped is a dual story by Kendra Washington-Bass and Kelly Peaks Horner that details their personal and professional journeys that have led them to unwrap how we have been conditioned to perpetuate these "isms" so that we can begin self-discovery, recovery, and eventually create an arena for women educational leaders to build positive and productive educational experiences that lead to equitable access for all students, especially our most marginalized. It's time we stop trying to fit into the "prototype" of acceptable leadership and leadership practices. And, instead, chart our own way. Create practices that allow us to thrive and achieve the success we desire. It's time to disrupt the traditional way leadership development and support are administered and ask for what we need and how we need it. We hope to not only impact you as an individual but also systems, like school boards, and structures, like school districts. We hope that our stories and experiences inspire reflection and action to dismantle the practices that prohibit our talents of leading and especially our own self-diminishing actions that prevent us from fully supporting each other.

Fierce Vulnerability - A Colored Girl's Truths, Trials, and Triumphs is the story of powerful women - Jean Marie, Ava, Vanessa and Simone, living the dream of black affluence in Washington DC. Each woman in her own time begins a dark journey to the underbelly of this dream. Ava is a ball busting powerhouse in the political sphere. Hers is a constant battle to prove her self-worth. Vanessa does her best to keep up her perfect appearances while catering to her own demons in silence. Simone shows us the cost of being superwoman and what becomes possible when we lean on our communities and our roots to lift us up. Jean Marie struggles with vulnerability and the personal power it brings through personal losses and challenges. We come to know them each through their own distinct voices. We come to see them more fully through the eyes of their sisters. It is through their collective perspective, friendship and sisterhood that we learn who they are and develop a sense of what it takes to claim freedom, power, and fierce vulnerability for ourselves.

Dharma Wheels tells two stories as one. One: the story of a motorcycle trip through 10 Western states that lie between the 105th meridian and the sea. Glacial mornings silent except for the squeak of still-cold leathers. Pinion smoke wafting over late-night country lanes. Meteors crisscrossing red rock canyon lands like some jai alai game of the gods. Six weeks sans phone or screens, the ticking of the odometer the only clock. Dharma Wheels is a love letter to the art of motorcycling.Second: the ancient, ever-new story of the human quest for happiness. Itself a journey, this quest is the backstory to any tale of the road. As a cognitive therapist and Zen practitioner, the author's whole life has been an inquiry into the habits of heart and mind that enable us to live and die well. These twin disciplines provide the means to recognize and relinquish the cognitive filters that cloud a direct apprehension of reality. Classic Zen texts and fMRI machines now agree: throughout space and time well-being is one the world over. Through the lens of science East and West, Dharma Wheels snaps into sharp focus the moving parts of this wellness.
