This volume presents a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of the different ways in which the two terms «politics» and «translation» interact. It affords an opportunity to look at translation as a highly complex activity that involves the participation of different agents with different backgrounds, orientations, ideologies, competences, goals and purposes. At the macro level, translation is seen as an activity carried out by gatekeepers ¿ translators, trans-editors, translation quality controllers, translation project managers, and the like ¿ to promote a certain narrative, achieve a goal or pursue an agenda. The ultimate aim of this volume is to shed light on how these various stakeholders explicitly or implicitly interpolate their cultural background, beliefs and values into the resulting text, thus overtly or covertly intervening to promote a certain theme or narrative.
A und Hs. Transkription AX. Transkription XA.

Our utmost aim is to present various points of view from different areas of linguistics and offer new insights for researchers and scholars in the field.
Thomas Durfey¿s Love for Money (1691) uses a boarding school in Chelsea as the setting for an amusing series of love intrigues. Characters include a long-lost heiress and her impoverished suitor, a mercenary jilt, a libertine rake with a touch of the gull, a bragging French coxcomb, and two hoydenish romps courted by fortune-hunting schoolmasters with treats of custard and cheesecake. An imperious plotting lady, together with her henpecked husband and her rascal lover, provide timely anti-Jacobite satire. This critical edition offers a fully annotated text and an introduction that places the comedy in its literary and theatrical context. The editors review Durfey¿s career and his redefinition of the comedy of wit, veering towards the exemplary in line with the moral values of the new regime.
«Offering a range of insightful readings of texts by Honigmann, this volume is engaging and compelling. It will resonate strongly with those readers familiar with Honigmann, deepening their understanding of her work, and will constitute, for others, an urgent invitation to explore her challenging, affecting, and humane ¿uvre further.»(Professor Emily Jeremiah, Royal Holloway, University of London)«Barbara Honigmann is one of the most incisive and engaging Jewish authors writing in German today. This collection of original essays, many of which illuminate the Jewish dimension of her texts, offers a superb introduction to the writer and raises the analysis of her work to new levels.»(Katja Garloff, Professor of German and Humanities, Reed College)This is the first full-length book in English devoted to the work of one of the most widely read and intriguing contemporary German-language writers. Barbara Honigmann, born in East Berlin in 1949 and a resident of Strasbourg since 1986, treats the major themes of our time from the special perspective of a practising Jewish woman. Her seemingly simple language navigates and reveals hidden complexities, an effect mirrored in her masterly use of form. This book covers Honigmann¿s entire ¿uvre, from her first breakthrough success to her most recent collection of essays and speeches. It includes detailed accounts of form and style, as well as wide-ranging discussions of themes and contexts. Approaching Honigmann¿s work from a variety of angles, including aesthetic analysis, feminist and memory studies, the literary exploration of space, and the investigation of autofiction, the essays collected here discuss Honigmann¿s unique voice and her treatment of identity and belonging, Jewishness across generations, migration and multiculturalism, postmemory and trauma, language and transcendence. The academic chapters in this volume are complemented by Honigmann¿s translation of an installation text by Chantal Akerman, an interview the book¿s editors conducted with the author in December 2021, and an extensive bibliography.
Historical and current educational perspectives are epistemologically challenging to weave together. The contributors brought together in this book have risen to that challenge and, in the process, have produced a detailed and thorough account of the issues and processes at play.Science, Mathematics, and Technology (SMT) education is recognised globally as a means of developing critically needed human capital. In Zimbabwe, SMT subjects constitute a significant component of the curriculum which, since political independence in 1980, has emphasised application-oriented, experientially-based teaching and learning. Efforts to mainstream this approach have resulted in several significant reforms to the country¿s education system. Relatedly, there are ongoing attempts to boost uptake in SMT subjects and, through them, to develop such professional skills as problem-solving, lifelong learning, teamwork, critical thinking, and the capacity to contribute and adapt to our rapidly changing world. There is a self-evident need to document progress made in these efforts and, in the process, to carefully examine issues at play, challenges met, and solutions developed. This book, developed through a partnership involving Zimbabwean editors and authors, was developed to fulfil this need. It is long overdue.
Neil Jordan is immediately associated with the successful films he has directed (The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire, Michael Collins...). And yet, he is also a man of letters. His literary work, composed of eight novels and a collection of short stories, is rich, dense and complex. It shows an interest in Irish history and politics, but also in the supernatural and the irrational. It creates a universe where time and space can abolish themselves, the material and the spiritual merge, the visible and invisible interpenetrate. Jordan¿s fiction also transgresses the borders in more than one way. Both realistic and fantastic, it establishes numerous connections with psychoanalysis, Christian religion, mythology or cultural tradition, and revisits them in an original way. The present study approaches Neil Jordan¿s literary work in all its diversity. It focuses primarily on the novelist, but also on the short story writer and the screenwriter, as his film making cannot be ignored. This book, devoted to the writer, aims to do justice to a major figure in contemporary Irish cultural life, whose artistic creation remains largely unexplored.
This book explores Federico García Lorcäs late poetry and drama within its context of mysticism. Lorcäs singular language reveals compelling evidence of innate spiritual potential, influenced by poets from Christian, Sufi, Buddhist, and other mystic traditions, from his earliest works to its culmination in the technical mastery of his last poems. Guided by musicality and polyvalence, close readings of The Tamarit Divan, Sonnets of Dark Love, and Yerma offer a novel approach to seemingly obscure texts that resist conventional analysis. The methodology of Lorcäs Immanent Mysticism adheres to the poet-playwright¿s own aesthetic theory. For Lorca, duende-inspired creation calls for equally inspired reception within true artistic experience. This groundbreaking study places Lorca not only within a contemporary spectrum of Modernist production, but, more importantly, within the framework of a new mysticism for our time.
In modern political science, the phenomenon of political leadership is described and explained using diverse theoretical models, different analytical perspectives, or different research scales. Keeping in mind this theoretical and research pluralism, the author suggests applying an original integral explanatory strategy, which defines the relational leadership asymmetry between the leader and followers in terms of a dialectical subject¿object relationship (co-determination); that is to say, in terms of a dynamic and complex political process in which the interdependencies and mutual influences of the leader and followers fall under analysis. In this sense, leadership is treated as a processual phenomenon in which the form, content, and shape of leadership depend not only on the talents, qualities, or abilities of the political leader, but also ¿ and in a gradable manner ¿ on the external environment and followers, their collective expectations, aspirations, goals, needs, etc.; or, speaking more broadly, the particular-political conditions in which the complex leadership mechanism takes place.
«This sophisticated and empathetic study explores a suite of important Australian literary works from the Chinese diaspora. Using memory studies to trace connections and contiguities, Dr Chen maps an emotionally charged literary network that is compelled by the past to confront the future. The result is a richly revealing exploration of transnational literary identity and complex forms of belonging and attachment across time and place.»(Professor Nicole Moore, UNSW Canberra)«If memory is the broken mirror of history, diasporic memories are intricate mosaics of multitudinous pasts: personal, collective, national, cosmopolitan, cultural and political. Reading Chinese Australian literature as a mimesis of memory, Beibei Chen offers invaluable insights into the entanglement of past and present and its effect on diasporic identity.»(Professor Wenche Ommundsen, University of Wollongong)Inspired by the «transnational turn» in global literature, this book explores the significance of transnational memory and identity in Chinese-Australian literature by closely examining representations of these two concepts in selected texts. By attending to diverse forms of memory such as collective memory, individual memory, cosmopolitan memory and transgenerational memory, this book offers unique observations on how different types of memory exert influence on the formation of identity in Chinese diasporic writings and tackles the complexity of reading literary texts in light of theories of memory, sociological studies and psychological analysis.
Poland and Taiwan: two parts of the world distant from each other, differing culturally and socially, and yet facing kind of similar challenges in the late 1980s and early 1990s ¿ characterised by the transition from an authoritarian political system to liberal democracy. This book seeks to present the process of democratisation of Poland and Taiwan from the point of view of shared perspectives. Invoking the classical literature of transitology, it is possible to explore similarities and differences between the democratisation of Poland and Taiwan among socioeconomic factors, fragmentation in society, political culture, meso- structures (e.g. political groups, social movements), political institutions, historical and national- identity aspects, and international influences.
This volume is a collection of studies dealing with age or, rather, ages, mainly from a linguistic viewpoint, but also accommodating inputs from other disciplinary perspectives. It focuses on the linguistic, social, economic and ethical aspects of social groups defined in terms of age ¿ which clearly includes seniors but is, of course, not limited to that. In a global setting where spaces are constantly being redefined, new technologies and phenomena like the COVID-19 pandemic exert a substantial influence on how ages are perceived, seen and constructed. Within such a complex and multi-layered context, the chapters of this book provide attempts at showcasing realities connected with language, ages and, in general, the discourses surrounding them.
In this research monograph, two empirical studies are presented, whose aim is to explore the linguistic cues to deception in written English and Spanish using computational tools like ALIAS WISER and LIWC. The tools have been tested on ground-truth data. After the automated text analysis, statistical classifiers are used to determine the best protocol for computational classification of true and false statements, and the role of emotional involvement is analyzed in low-stakes deception. The results demonstrate that, in our corpora, there is a real difference between "laboratory-produced" lies told in an experimental setting and high-stakes lies told in a police investigation.
«Given that most scholarship on cinema and utopia focuses on the subgenre of dystopia and its pessimistic discourses, Mónica Martín¿s volume could not be more timely. It is a pioneering work; arguably the first book in English devoted to systematically analysing the utopian impulse as a textual feature in contemporary Anglophone cinema. Discussing a wide range of films, from mainstream blockbusters to independent, low-budget productions, this is a fascinating comparative study on the potential for cinema to engage with the phenomenon of social dreaming and the search for a better society. This is not only a theoretical intervention, but a political one.»(Mariano Paz, University of Limerick)Thinking across the boundaries of utopian studies, film studies, and the sociology of globalisation, this book argues that 21st-century cinema illustrates the rebirth of utopia as an open method grounded in cosmopolitan worldviews and aspirations. Rather than negating hope, promoting a fixed agenda, or depicting an exemplary status quo, contemporary movies such as Children of Men, The East, and The Hunger Games series articulate a cosmopolitan utopianism that vindicates egalitarian and sustainable futures. Re-inscribing the utopian within the political, many 21st-century films challenge existing geopolitical borders and the social barriers imposed by class, gender, race, sexuality, and birthplace. Ecocritical film spaces, caring protagonists, non-mainstream survivors, ecofeminist leaders, and cooperative networks prompt spectators to develop integrating dialogical imaginaries that contest patriarchal traditions, ecocidal progress, and neoliberal definitions of the global. Contemporary with climate change, economic recession, and global social movements, the films explored in this book re-stage utopia as a cosmopolitan method of critical resistance and transformative action¿a process in the making that evokes a fairer world to be as much as it speaks of a world that is: one in which global interdependence has shaped not only risks, hostilities, and inequalities, but also inclusive horizons, holistic thinking, intersectional activism, and nurturing affects for others that have become part of us.
This investigation of Polish, Jewish, and German sources demonstrates the roles of music in occupied Poland. Its former citizens had their access to music controlled by the Nazi Ministry of Propaganda. It was rationed as other goods, depending on racial (i.e. also legal) status. Official music performances served as a propagandistic tool to further divide the Nazi-segregated population. Music played clandestinely embodied resistance. It restored the sense of community and helped save musicians persecuted as Jews, like W¿adys¿aw Szpilman. The documents analyzed in the monograph confirm the dehumanization of prospective victims, mixed with a narcissistic self-righteous view of Nazi songs and propaganda ultimately led to the organized presence of music in the Holocaust sites.

This book is the second volume of Social and Economic Studies within the Framework of Emerging Global Developments which includes empirical and theoretical original chapters written by researchers from different countries and universities. The target audience of this book is researchers, students and academics interested in social and economic studies.
The emergence of memory and the incorporation of new analytical categories for studying violence have gone a long way to revitalising research on the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime. However, the obsession with the presentism inherent to the post-truth age poses new unsettling challenges for historians, insofar as they have relinquished their role as custodians of the interpretation of the past. In this book, an analysis is performed on the different times of memory that have elapsed in Spain from 1936 down to the present day, and on the problems posed by the use of concepts linked to the standardisation of the transitional account of the violence unleashed in the areas under Nationalist and Republican control. Likewise, versus the intention of imposing a sole one-way public narrative of the past, it vindicates a specific space for its historical interpretation, less dependent on the peremptory and fickle demands of the present, as well as the need to construct a new account of Spain¿s traumatic past that does not imply its dissipation in different forms of cultural memory.
This is one of the first books on U.S. foreign policy and NATO in the international system published in the immediate wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The book assesses the extent to which the Russian invasion of Ukraine pushed both the U.S. and NATO into making necessary changes to contend with a multipolar world structured in terms of Cold War 2.0 great power competition. The North Atlantic space is now a complex and complicated strategic environment. In addition to the persistent confrontation between NATO and Russia over Ukraine, multi-dimensional security challenges emanate from China. In addition, hybrid war operations and competition over advanced technologies are fast becoming disruptive threats as are transnational threats like climate change, pandemics, and migration. Moreover, a Cold War 2.0 system of tension and rivalry is playing out along military, economic, and technological lines with two bounded orders between the U.S. and NATO allies on one side and China and Russia on the other. The consequences will likely force NATO to wrestle with whether the alliance is transatlantic with a global outlook or a global alliance with responsibility for upholding the liberal world order. "This is a timely contribution to deepen our understanding of how Russian and Chinese offensive maneuvers, along with the security risks posed by the current pandemic, climate change, terrorism, migration, and threats posed by hybrid war-fare are shaping NATO¿s strategic reorientation. Dolan also recognizes the internal threats to liberal democracies, namely the rise of illiberal political forces, in NATO member states and the challenges they pose to the Euro-Atlantic alliance. The book is clearly organized and includes the author¿s recommendations for NATO¿s effective path forward."¿S. Mohsin Hashim, Professor of Political Science, Muhlenberg College "An extraordinarily timely and germane assessment of the evolution of the transatlantic relationship and the identity and roles of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the European, Eurasian, Greater Middle Eastern, and broader global security architecture in the wake of Russiäs intervention in (and conduct of a war of choice against) Ukraine beginning in February 2022. Most significantly, the book is instructive in situating the historical strains of cooperation and discord between the United States and its European allies within shifting strategic and geopolitical environments that demand balance and in safeguarding often interconnected threats posed by global and regional adversaries, most notably Russia, China, Iran and North Korea on one hand, and transnational challenges such as climate change, cybersecurity, and Islamist extremist driven terrorism on the other. Further, the author is adept in identifying and explaining the links between those threats emphasized in the 2022 NATO Strategic Concept and the daunting challenges in achieving the requisite transatlantic unity to manage them effectively."¿Robert J. Pauly, Jr., Professor of International Development, The University of Southern Mississippi
This volume brings together work by renowned scholars in the field of foreign/second/heritage languages and literatures who employ a variety of scholarly tools to examine opportunities associated with literature as a force for rehumanizing and invigorating target language (TL) education in the 21st century. Offering viable avenues for reconciling historic differences between language pedagogues and literature educators, their work demonstrates that language pedagogy and literary studies are not divergent or competing disciplines separated by firm barriers, but rather convergent, interdependent, mutually beneficial, and genuinely complementary areas of inquiry. Each chapter foregrounds the multilayered value of target language literary education, aligning it with competencies that reside at the core of broader contemporary educational and societal priorities and aspirations. The contributors connect literature education to a wide array of goals, including not only literacy, communicative competencies, critical reading, and critical thinking, but also social engagement, global citizenship, intercultural sensitivity, and symbolic competence. Without minimizing the significant challenges facing language educators today, Rehumanizing the Language Curriculum argues in various ways for rehumanizing language education as the most effective means for overcoming pressing challenges, for addressing urgent priorities, and for approaching our full potential within the diversity of this vibrant community of scholarship and practice. "Rehumanizing the Language Curriculum should be compulsory reading for educators wishing to integrate language and literature teaching. This is a welcome and much needed contribution to rehumanizing language education in the 21st century."¿Werner Delanoy, University of Klagenfurt"Featuring an international cast of contributors, this volume provides new insights into the role of literature in 21st century language education. Through various theoretical, ideological, and pedagogical lenses, the chapters present innovative and thought-provoking ways to reconcile the language-content divide and teach language and literature as interdependent parts of a whole. The result is a volume that encourages readers to value and embrace the range of disciplinary content and scholarly perspectives comprising language programs."¿Kate Paesani, University of Minnesota"This wide-ranging collection highlights the importance of literature education in the language classroom, critiquing reductionist views of language education and making insightful connections between areas such as literary reading, deep reading, language education and general educational competencies. A thoughtful and often provocative collection, it provides a variety of lenses for understanding the ways in which second language learners can engage with literature, and a clear illustration of the immense world of new possibilities that is opened up when using literature."¿Amos Paran, University College London"Rehumanizing the Language Curriculum is an ambitious, wide-ranging, yet readable collection of chapters which makes us rediscover the role of literature in language education. Addressing current issues such as intercultural communication, ecology, and diversity, this book proves the practicality and versatility of literature. In the gloomy educational environment in which pedagogical effects are mistakenly visualized statistically, uniformly, or even financially, the multifaceted approaches illustrated in this volume are a must for language teachers and scholars in any context."¿Masayuki Teranishi, University of Hyogo, Japan
