This book analyzes the ideology of the Swiss far right in the period between 1933 and 1945. It provides a detailed sociological overview of the development of Swiss Frontism. Through a broad empirical study based on archive data, the author scrutinizes the views of eight prominent personalities from the milieu of Swiss Frontists.

The equation of Christianity with tragedy has often been seen by literary and theological scholars as specious at best, sacrilegious at worst. During the mid-seventeenth century, however, a group of French playwrights saw fit to produce tragedies that drew not on Roman or Greek mythology, as was the norm, but on stories of Christian heroism. The author examines a broad corpus of plays ranging from the famous works of Pierre Corneille to near-forgotten examples of female-authored tragedy. Drawing on the writings of Michel Foucault as well as a host of contemporary and modern-day theologians, the author shows the martyr to be a major figure in theatrical performance and religious thought alike, exposing the porosity of the boundary separating the spaces of stage entertainment and church worship. The martyr plays, whether they threaten to destabilize the genre or define it, are ultimately shown to be integral to our understanding of what constituted tragedy in early modern France.

Over the last three decades Slavoj ¿i¿ek has become an iconic figure of intellectuel engagé and his works have engendered ongoing reflection within as different academic disciplines as philosophy, literature or cultural, gender, postcolonial and film studies. But when it comes to music, things look different.With an emphasis on the German modernist tradition from Wagner to Schönberg, a whole range of references to music are scattered throughout ¿i¿ek¿s copious body of works. However, these efforts seem to go almost unnoticed within academia ¿ at least on first glance. Looking more closely, one notices a subtle but nevertheless consistent adoption of ¿i¿ek¿s theories within musicology, spreading across a broad range of topics and approaches. So, ¿i¿ek has become part of musicology, even if his presence is still uncharted territory.The present volume, which appeals to musicologists and philosophers alike, intends to map different ways in which ¿i¿ek¿s philosophy has been adopted in order to approach many of musicology¿s core questions, from musical analysis to the opera studies, from contemporary music to the history of the discipline itself. This book addresses a research gap in the study of eugenics in fictional literature: the analysis of the nexus of eugenics and genetics in 21st-century novels, detached from their authors¿ ideological beliefs. It is based on an understanding of literature as an interdiscourse in Jürgen Link¿s sense. The study employs categories developed by Rabinow and Rose in the context of Foucault¿s concept of ¿biopower.¿ It thereby demonstrates that, though officially fallen from grace in light of the Nazi atrocities committed in the name of racial hygiene, eugenic ideas remain surprisingly resilient in the sciences as well as in fiction. Thus, the nexus between eugenics and genetics continues to serve as an important force in the structuring of scientific and contemporary popular (inter-)discourses.

This book contains a selection of papers on issues of current interest in syntax and morpho-syntax. Most topics pertain to the question of the relation between word order and syntactic structure. The discussion starts with a proposal of extending the theory of relativization to reason clauses. It continues with the analysis of the realization of focus in Basque and the discussion of current views on the syntax of cleft constructions. Next, an inquiry into the rigidity of sentence left-periphery is offered in a cross-linguistic perspective. The two final contributions discuss feature-free derivations in syntax applied to a single morpho-syntactic problem, and the question of gradient acceptability of Polish sentences featuring possessive items in the context of the competition between their reflexive and pronominal forms.

The ENTEP Project, funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, has been initiated with the aim of improving the quality of education and teaching, enhancing teaching practices and further developing educational science in Russia and China. This book contains the results of this project. The Novels of Zsigmond Móricz in the Context of European Realism is the first English-language monograph on one of Hungary¿s¿and Central Europe¿s¿most important modern authors. This monograph is the first substantial contribution to the study of the Swiss novelist Catherine Colomb¿s dialogue with Marcel Proust and Virginia Woolf as well as to time and memory studies. The framework and approach devised to examine Colomb¿s oeuvre contribute to unravelling some of its complexities, not only in its curving style, ephemeral, and sequence-defying narrative, but also in its literary engagement with the science and philosophy that shaped modernity and proposed new ways of thinking time, knowledge, and the human experience. This thesis ultimately allows us to gain insight into the originality of Colombian time experience, memory, and point-of-view representations, transcending the alleged influence of her iconic predecessors.

Anhand umfangreicher Archivbestände und Quellenmaterialien kann eine Zwei-Klassen-Medizin aufgedeckt werden, in der die indigene Bevölkerung deutlich benachteiligt wurde. Der Wandel der wissenschaftlichen Praxis und die politische Instrumentalisierung medizinischer Sachverhalte werden gezeigt. Die durch Robert Koch entsandte Malariaexpedition des Karl von Vagedes und die experimentelle Malariaimpfung von Philalethes Kuhn verdeutlichen die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse.
