This volume offers an important examination of the ways in which artistic manipulations of time can lead to a different perception of time as nonsynchronous and anti-chronological. The range of media (philosophical essays, film, plays, novels, autobiographical narratives) and periods (medieval, early modern, contemporary) explored here testify to the enduring significance of so-called «delays» and the need to rethink these as anachronies. The spectral presence of the notion of «Kairos» throughout this volume connects different attempts to subvert linear time, on occasion allowing events and temporalities to coexist and compete or, alternately, asking the mind to stretch itself and experience the uneasiness of time by attempting and failing to encompass diverse spaces and temporalities concomitantly. The resulting essays interrogate, test and contest the limits of the possible and enable a rethinking of what time could represent across disciplines and genres.
«These influential essays by one of the world¿s leading experts in the field revisit the central methodological debates in Utopian Studies over the past half century. They include recent commentary on the development of key disagreements respecting the concepts of utopia, eutopia and dystopia, as well as the relations between the three ¿faces¿ of the subject, literature, ideas or theory, and intentional communities. Sargent¿s encyclopaedic knowledge of utopianism is deployed throughout to illuminate many areas of concern. This collection provides an essential starting-point for any student of this vibrant, controversial, increasingly popular, and ever-mutating subject.»(Gregory Claeys, Professor Emeritus of History, University of London)«Utopia is about change, and how better to promote it than to model it? Here a world-leading bibliographer and scholar reconsiders his considerable opus with an open mind but no less passion for his urgently timely topic. The imperfect, critical utopia ¿ whether in fiction, practice, or theory, whether as dystopian warning or eutopian inspiration ¿ is the only one we can trust. Sargent rejects the naysaying of cynics and anti-utopians, urging us to envision and struggle for betterment. ¿Utopias will not go away,¿ he contends. ¿They will always remain the conscience of the world.¿ Indeed they won¿t, and indeed they will.»(Michael S. Cummings, Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus ofPolitical Science, University of Colorado, Denver)«This collection makes available Professor Sargent¿s most important essays on utopia, particularly those dealing with attempts to define and delimit the genre. This is an absolutely essential work which reveals the full breath of Sargent¿s contributions to the study of utopia.»(Peter Fitting, Professor Emeritus of French, University of Toronto)«Sargent¿s contribution to the emergence of Utopian Studies as a distinct field is unparalleled. It comprises encyclopaedic knowledge, theoretical rigour, and tireless support of new work. This volume contains seminal essays notable for their impact, but also for their clarity, originality, and erudition. To have them together in one place, with his reflections on them, is an invaluable resource for both young and established scholars ¿ and essential reading for anyone working in the field.»(Ruth Levitas, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Bristol)Utopianism envisions a significantly different society than the current one and includes utopian literature, intentional communities, and utopian social theory. This volume reprints some of the author¿s articles on utopianism together with two not previously published and notes on how they came to be written and his reflections from 2021.
An extraordinary tribute to the visions of Joyce Canaan, a vibrant academic activist who touched so many with her intellect, her acuity, her humanity and her love. Anyone interested in critical pedagogy has to read this inspiring book that takes so many slices on what the university has become and what it still might be.(Professor Michael Burawoy, University of California, Berkeley)This Festschrift is a beautiful tribute to Joyce Canaan, a woman whose revolutionary intellect and commitment should be treasured and studied, not only remembered. Each contribution illuminates her voice and expands on her spirit. The result is a volume that traces how we learn in the pursuit for justice, through building and sharing knowledge within a community of struggle. This is an important volume for any student of revolutionary and feminist education.(Sara Carpenter, Department of Educational Studies, University of Alberta)After the great global «pause», this volume presents an exciting look forward through the memory of boundary crosser, Joyce Canaan, whose life¿s work scrutinized the impact of neoliberal regimes of accountability and the academy¿s compliance with these processes. Collectively, the contributors warn of cultural myopia: that cultural near-sightedness that stands in the way of critical engagement with exclusionary mechanisms at both the pedagogic and economic levels.(Sheila Landers Macrine, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth)Joyce Canaan¿s life illustrates what it means to be angry at social injustice and to challenge it through theory and practice, spirit and emotion, intellectual rigour, love and humour. This collection movingly and rigorously celebrates her personal contribution through engaging with contemporary issues for critical pedagogy today.(Jim Crowther, Honorary Fellow, University of Edinburgh)Critical Pedagogy and Emancipation: A Festschrift in Memory of Joyce Canaan offers its readers a powerful vision of how radical educational praxis based on genuine dialogue and solidarity can «humanise» both learners¿ and teachers¿ experience of education and invigorate revolutionary and socialist democratic politics of the Left. The book is written as a celebration of the legacy of Professor Joyce Canaan (1950¿2018), a radical intellectual and feminist. The contributors take her project of critical pedagogical scholar-activism as their common point of departure, developing themes ¿ drawing in particular on public sociology, social movement and popular education, as well as critical pedagogy ¿ around critiques of the neoliberal university, popular and working-class educational movements, feminism, anti-racism, climate justice, critical theory and politically engaged teaching, learning and research.
In spite of recession, austerity and pandemics, Ireland has demonstrated an extraordinary degree of resilience, becoming one of the most successful economies in Europe and developing into a society remarkably at ease with itself. This book argues that the seeds of this achievement were sown between the mid-1950s and 1960s, when a Second Irish Revival took place which was comparable to the earlier Celtic Revival of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. At the heart of this revival were three men: T. K. Whitaker, the youthful Secretary of the Department of Finance, Seán Ó Riada, musician and composer, and Thomas Kinsella, poet, translator and academic. Ó Riada and Kinsella were close friends in Dublin¿s emerging artistic world of the 1950s but Kinsella was also Whitaker¿s private secretary in the Department of Finance. The three men, although very different in background and personality, shared a deep knowledge and love of Irish culture, heritage, history and language, but they were also determined to study and absorb the best of what the world could offer in their respective fields of endeavour and it is argued that this combination was a critical factor in their contribution to Irish society. The book will review the arguments of the sceptics who disagreed with Ireland¿s embrace of globalisation and will conclude with a speculative account of how the Mandarin, the Musician and the Mage might like to see Ireland develop in the 2020s.
