This collection of striking color images from the American West is both a moving national portrait as well as a celebration of analog color photography from an undisputed genius of the form. The photographer behind Life magazine's first ever all-color photographic essay, Ernst Haas made-and captured-history as an early adapter of Kodachrome film. The Austrian-born artist had already established himself as a black and white photographer when he moved to America in 1951. But as a member of the renowned Magnum agency, he transformed the genre with his color-saturated images, the perfect medium for capturing America's geographic and cultural landscapes. From desert storms, Route 66 gas stations, and Las Vegas neon to rolling prairie, dilapidated farms, small-town parades, and city sidewalks, Haas' perfectly composed images, contain a distinct pictorial language, suffused with poetry, pattern, and light. At the same time his pictures communicate a journalist's point of view, whether the subject is rural poverty, suburban comfort, or the myth of the American West. The remarkable book offers a vision of America that feels both poignantly distant and reassuringly familiar.

Filled with brilliant reproductions, engaging texts and the latest scholarship, this portable and attractively priced volume is the perfect introduction to one of European modern art's most important movements. Founded in Munich in 1911, the Blue Rider Group was a revolutionary collective of artists that pioneered German Expressionism. Including Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Natalia Goncharova, Gabriele Münter, and Marianne von Werefkin, the group rejected the prevailing formal and academic artistic trends of their time, sought to break free from the constraints of traditional painting, transcend the material world, and explore emotional and spiritual truths in their art. This book spotlights 35 important works that embody the artists' pioneering achievements and radical innovations. It features stunning reproductions that highlight the movement's use of luminous colors, symbolic forms, and expressive brushwork. An introductory essay explores the cultural and historical environment that led to the group's establishment, the diverse critical response to their work, and their lasting impact on subsequent artistic movements, such as Cubism, the Bauhaus, and Abstract Expressionism.

As inviting and sensual as a warm summer day, this opulent exhibition catalog offers a deep appreciation of Klimt's ornate, exquisitely detailed, and atmospheric landscape paintings. For the last twenty years of his career, Gustav Klimt devoted considerable energy to painting landscapes during his summer vacations-and these bucolic scenes became some of his most sought-after pictures. Filled with vibrant high-quality reproductions and featuring engaging essays by leading scholars in the field, this exhibition catalog situates Klimt's landscapes alongside fin-de-siècle fashion, photography, and decorative arts of the Wiener Werkstätte in particular. Klimt's landscapes are examined within the context of his larger oeuvre and traces the evolution of his style: from one informed by the academic tradition, to his ornate "golden style" decorative approach influenced by the ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk, and then to a more painterly manner of working in pure color. The book also considers Klimt's relationship with his muse, fashion designer Emilie Flöge; his deep engagement with the Viennese avant-garde; and the specific techniques he employed to achieve mesmerizing, harmonious works that literally shimmer with light and color.

250 years after the painter's birth, this luxurious exhibition catalog offers glimpses into the mystery of Friedrich's largely posthumous popularity as well as the latest research into his training and techniques. Largely ignored during his lifetime, Caspar David Friedrich was a meticulous painter of emotionally evocative landscapes, often featuring solitary figures or groups of people against dramatic scenery. His work has inspired many artists to the present day, and this volume explores the role that Berlin's Nationalgalerie played in bringing Friedrich into the forefront of modern art history. It also shines a light on Friedrich's remarkable use of pairs in paintings-including his most famous pairing, Monk by the Sea and Abbey in the Oakwood-which he employed to express a range of different perspectives and the concept of change. Finally it examines the latest research into Friedrich's technique: his early training in Copenhagen; his sketches, preparatory drawings and underdrawings; and his unconventional selection and use of pigments. Throughout this monograph readers will find stunning reproductions of sixty paintings, including several iconic works, and fifty drawings-representing collections from around the world. Coupled with the latest research, they combine to offer a completely up-to-date appreciation of Friedrich's extraordinary talent and his unquestionable status as a pioneer of modern art. With contributions by Birgit Verwiebe, Johannes Grave, Hilmar Frank, Werner Busch, Anna Marie Pfäfflin, Gerd-Helge Vogel, Kristina Mösl, Ralph Gleis, Sintje Guericke.

A pioneering artist who subverted conventions in her depictions of the nude, self-portraits, and still-lives. An iconoclast in her own time, Modersohn-Becker is today considered an icon of modernity. Throughout her career, Paula Modersohn-Becker boldly experimented with styles while steadfastly pursuing the truth of everyday life and her own female experience. This monograph looks at the entire spectrum of her work-figure drawings, still-lifes, self-portraiture, landscape, nudes, and portraits of young girls and old women-to illustrate the evolution of an artist reacting to seismic cultural change at the turn of the nineteenth century. Whether she was embracing or subverting the principles of realism, naturalism, impressionism, symbolism, or expressionism, Modersohn-Becker remained interested in issues of identity, peeling away outer layers to uncover what she understood as the true essence of life. This book features numerous examples of Modersohn-Becker's striking and relatively unknown drawings of men, women, and children facing poverty, as well as her highly original figure paintings and nudes-including her unprecedented nude self-portraits. Accompanying the first museum exhibition of Modersohn-Becker's work in the United States, it reveals the deeply personal and authentic work of an artist who resolutely forged her own path.

For this collection Haas drew on images made in all phases of his career from 1952 to 1984, and, despite the title, most of these photographs are not abstract but rather clear, focused, well-exposed images of recognizable surfaces from the observable world around him: crumbling paint, graphic road markings, fabric, liquids, detritus, decay, and torn posters. This generously illustrated and comprehensive book focuses on a decisive decade in Max Beckmann's career as one of the leading figurative painters of the twentieth century. This publication will provide insight into a critical period in the artist's development and the accomplishments that earned him such high esteem. Max Beckmann's brief but profoundly jarring service as a medical orderly during World War I led to a nervous breakdown. He assimilated his experiences and incorporated recent and radical developments in art, such as Cubism and Expressionism, leading him to advance new pictorial conceptions beginning in 1915. To many of his contemporaries, the work Beckmann created between 1917 and 1925 placed him at the forefront of the latest developments in representational painting. In 1925, Beckmann's celebrated status was confirmed by his prominence in the groundbreaking "Neue Sachlichkeit" (New Objectivity) exhibition in Mannheim, although he later distanced himself from the term. This book will situate Beckmann artistically and historically. Essays by both established experts and emerging scholars investigate the seminal energy found in the work he created between 1915 to 1925-a period to which the artist himself repeatedly returned over the course of his lifetime. The self- referential aspect of Beckmann's output is key to understanding his progression as an artist, which comes more clearly into focus via an analysis of these critical early years.

Discover how painters such as Van Gogh, Mondrian, and Jacoba van Heemskerck drew on the legacy of Dutch landscapes and realism to put their own spin on the Impressionist movement. Impressionism may have originated in France, but artists in late 19th- and early 20th-century Netherlands quickly made it their own. The genre's vibrant colors and focus on light and atmosphere were a perfect complement to the country's groundbreaking traditions of landscape painting and realism. This exhibition catalog brings together hundreds of works by nearly forty artists including Johan Barthold Jongkind, Vincent van Gogh, Jacoba van Heemskerck, and Piet Mondrian. It traces the birth of the Hague School, whose practitioners captured the changing moods of light in the coastline's vast, grey skies. And it explores the Amsterdam Impressionists, whose cityscapes offered realistic images of modern life. Alongside vibrant reproductions of masterworks, a series of lively essays explore a diverse array of topics, including Dutch landscape painting within an international context; Dutch artist settlements and communities; and iconography in Dutch impressionism.

A groundbreaking, new perspective on the painter's scandalous nudes. Among the most celebrated works of Modigliani's brief but brilliant career are his large-format nudes. Drenched in color and glowing with the artist's deep appreciation of women and the female form, these works ushered in a new era of nude portraiture, while also causing an enormous scandal. This stunning exhibition catalog offers a new perspective on this aspect of Modigliani's work by examining for the first time his portraits of emancipated women sporting coupe garçonnes haircuts and wearing loin cloths. Modigliani was one of the first chroniclers of the femme moderne, which also influenced his nude painting and the scandal they caused. Featuring lavish reproductions and astute texts by leading scholars, this volume also examines Modigliani's cultural context in European Classicism, from Toulouse-Lautrec and Cezanne to the work of his contemporaries, including Paula Modersohn-Becker, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Jeanne Mammen and Wilhelm Lehmbruck; and traces his impact on future European Modernism and New Objectivity.

A culturally diverse selection of works by Laura Aguilar, melanie bonajo, Xaviera Simmons, Minerva Cuevas, Barbara Kruger, Nadia Huggins, Ana Mendieta, Sim Chi Yin, Pamela Singh, Francesca Woodman and others are presented alongside works of an activist nature to demonstrate how women are regularly at the forefront of advocating and caring for the planet. Together these texts and important artworks reveal how the oppression of women, feminized bodies and indigenous, Black and trans communities and the degradation of the planet are inextricably linked - and the ways in which understanding our environment can resist and overcome the logic of capitalist economies.

Spanning the career of one of Japan's most revered photographers, this monograph-the only English-language volume of its kind-features exquisitely detailed full-page images that capture the relationship between human-made structures and the natural world. Toshio Shibata's large-format contemporary landscapes are distinguished by their haunting beauty, graceful composition, and meticulous detail. Using long exposures, and eliminating any references to people, horizons, or identifying geographic reference points, Shibata captures structures such as dams, bridges, reservoirs, and roads as they interact with their natural settings-mountainsides, rivers, and forests and fields. The results are highlighted by painterly composition; filled with patterns, lines, and fluid action; and unmistakably Japanese in their aesthetic. Curated and with commentary by Phillip Prodger, one of the most erudite and critical voices in contemporary photography, this book will appeal both to fans of Shibata's work as well as an audience that has yet to discover his remarkable oeuvre.
