This series of portraits by Isaac Hernandez honors social, cultural and sustainability leaders, ranging from community activists to internationally known figures. They share a universal drive to make a difference, with unique expressions. These portraits, an ongoing passion project spanning more than a decade, were taken to accompany published interviews with these fascinating champions. This collection of inspiring leaders is an open and expanding investigation of contribution, an offering to acknowledge the possibly infinite. Ordinary people accomplish the extraordinary, including those who formed an integral core for the birth of a global movement: Selma Rubin, Paul Rellis, Marc McGinnes, and Bud Bottoms, who participated to launch Earth Day in Santa Barbara, protect the last stretch of empty coastline in California (the Gaviota Coast), develop the concept and study of environmental law, and create a host of nonprofits. These sustainability pioneers share pages with leaders like Andy Lipkis (TreePeople), Michael Pollan (author, Food Rules), Sylvia Earle (oceanographer), Paul Erlich (author The Dominant Animal), Roberta Salazar (Birds and Rivers), and Harold Powell (Telios Environmental), as well as better known personalities, like authors Amy Tan, Isabel Allende, and Gore Vidal, actors Javier Bardem, Antonio Banderas and Will Smith, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

To Die in the USA portrays, not unlike Citizen Kane, the metaphorical death, and life of a Spanish exile. Set mainly in California and New York, but also in Spain, England, France, Venezuela, Colombia, and Chile, this work is a combination of fiction, history, and memoir. To Die in the USA is an antihero's existential odyssey from the Spanish Civil War to the Reagan Era, sometimes crude and cruel, but always tempered by a dose of black humor. This memoir is a work of self-fiction. Names have been changed, characters combined and events compressed. Certain episodes are imaginative recreation, and those episodes are not intended to portray actual events. A Spanish version of this book was originally published in 1999 under the pen name Floreal Hernández and the title Morir en Isla Vista. Out of respect for the victims of the recent tragedy in Isla Vista, the title of the English version has been changed.

De komst van de olie-industrie op Curaçao en Aruba leidde tot sociaal-economische verschuivingen die grote gevolgen hadden voor de politieke aspiraties. Zo werd de roep om autonomie en meer democratie (algemeen kiesrecht) langzamerhand steeds luider. Midden jaren 30 keerde Moises da Costa Gomez terug naar Curaçao uit Nederland. Deze briljante student sloot zijn rechtenstudie af met een proefschrift waarin hij scherpe kritiek uitte op de koloniale macht in de Antillen. Terug op Curaçao stortte hij zich met hart en ziel in de politieke strijd. Da Costa Gomez' einddoel was de materiële vooruitgang van de zes Antilliaanse eilanden en geestelijke verheffing van het arme deel van het volk van Curaçao. In de turbulente oorlogsjaren gebruikte hij de politiek als middel om vooruitgang voor het volk mogelijk te maken. Dòktor, zoals hij in de volksmond genoemd werd, was een charismatische leider die zich even goed thuis voelde bij het volk in de kunuku als in de meer geprivilegieerde delen van de bevolking. Hij droeg in belangrijke mate bij aan de redactie van het Statuut van 1954, dat de autonomie voor de Nederlandse Antillen realiseerde. Dit boek is een bijdrage tot de bewustmaking van toekomstige generaties van onze politieke geschiedenis en van de belangrijke rol die Mr. Dr. Moises Frumencio da Costa Gomez daarin heeft gespeeld.
