In today's world, actual money (i.e. cash) has become more of an existential concept.¿¿"CASHING CHECKS with Jim Morrison offers a surreal cascade of archetypes from, among others, ancient Greece, the Bible, American Literature, and pop culture. Moving through it is the speaker's companion spirit and guru, Jim Morrison-Lizard King, Narcissus/Adonis. Set in a world where, in Albert Einstein's words, 'reality is merely an illusion,' Lindsey Martin-Bowen's poems are alive with wit, evocative imagery, insight, and sometimes downright playfulness. Through heeding Morrison's counsel to 'go weirder,' she's made this collection reader-friendly."-William Trowbridge, Missouri Poet Laureate, 2012-2016 Author, Call Me Fool (2022)"In Lindsey Martin-Bowen's CASHING CHECKS with Jim Morrison, I relish every word, compelled by the poet's stories and singing voice. Fantasy and fact merge in these invocations of the seminal American rocker Morrison and of his spirit. Join me as a reader in exploring this exciting testament to the power of language to resurrect history and wonder."-Denise Low, Kansas Poet Laureate, 2007-2009 Poetry Unbound Featured Poet

  • - Poems by Dafydd AP Gwilym
    af Dafydd ap Gwilym
    187,95 kr.

The greatest poet of medieval Wales. A brilliant and canny poet of love, Dafydd ap Gwilym explores the intensity of erotic desire: its deep seriousness as well as its deep comedy. Although distant in time and circumstance, Dafydd's work confronts us with a virtuosic strangeness, a directness, and a sense of lived realness. In his poems, he lingers outside a village, loiters in the woods waiting for a tryst that never happens, peers through a window, stumbles in the dark. Despite the centuries and the technological gulfs that separate us, Dafydd's world is also our world, and his poems, like the best of all poetry, surprisingly modern. With a voice coy, confident, and continually alluring, his poetry beckons and endures.

  • af Matt Schumacher
    187,95 kr.

"In this rich and remarkably inclusive collection, Matt Schumacher renders forgotten towns un-forgotten. With vivid imagery and music, he re-members, he re-embodies them onto pages of a poetic atlas. Here, a grateful reader also discovers tales about saloons and cemeteries, Great Plains buffalo and a pot-bellied pig, wild huckleberries and the bits of wedding cake fed to a deer. In one of the book's four sections, Schumacher offers epistolary persona poems that give a panoply of candid and often wrenching histories, laments, confessions, and revelations. The chronological and geographical scope of this collection is impressive. Ghost Town Odes holds an ambitious and admirable trove of poems." --Paulann Petersen, Oregon Poet Laureate Emerita and author of The Voluptuary and Understory "When I started reading Matt Schumacher's poems, I had no idea I'd be getting a lesson in Pacific Northwest history. But what a lesson! From the farcical gold mine at Bourne, Oregon, in the 1800s, to the native villages clustered along the Columbia riverbank before enormous dams built during the last century flooded Celilo Falls, Matt writes with great sensitivity and knowledge of his subjects. Vivid images fuel the imagination with a longing for what once was. Matt knows his history and his poems reflect his research. The collection goes superbly on: There are "The Deep Creek Yuan Gui Speak their Grievance," "Ballad of a Basque Sheepherder," and many more, all poignant and delightful, not just for those who appreciate well-written poetry, but also for those who want to learn more about the region's colorful--and too often tragic--history." --R. Gregory Nokes, author of Massacred for Gold: The Chinese in Hells Canyon and Breaking Chains: Slavery on Trial in the Oregon Territory

"Amelia DIaz Ettinger's book of poems, Speaking at a Time, is a gathering of poems about her father, her daughter, the town of Caguas, and the race track, among other things. These recollections pulse with energy, and they echo the poetry of Lorca and Neruda. This is a strong, first book." --Peter Sears, Oregon Poet Laureate

When Zachary A. Smith's father died unexpectedly while Zachary was incarcerated, he received a small inheritance from his father's estate. The State of Missouri filed a civil suit against him under the Missouri Incarceration Reimbursement Act (MIRA). Smith secured a dismissal of the State's suit, but the State appealed and the dismissal was overturned. The court entered judgment against Smith, ordering the Missouri Department of Corrections to collect 90% of any money deposited into his inmate account by friends and family. Seeing that fighting the MIRA case in state court was getting him nowhere, Smith started researching United States Bankruptcy Codes and found a loophole. A fundamental goal of the federal bankruptcy laws enacted by Congress is to give debtors a financial "fresh start" from burdensome debts. In Local Loan Co. v. Hunt, 292 U.S. 234, 244 (1934), the Supreme Court made this point about the purpose of the bankruptcy law: It gives to the honest but unfortunate debtor...a new opportunity in life and a clear field for future effort, unhampered by the pressure and discouragement of preexisting debt. This goal is accomplished through the bankruptcy discharge, which releases debtors from personal liability from specific debts and prohibits creditors from ever taking any action against them to collect those debts. All SMITH'S GUIDES are made to be as helpful as possible (see also "SMITH'S GUIDE to Habeas Corpus Relief for State Prisoners Under 28 U.S.C. §2254," and "SMITH'S GUIDE to Executive Clemency for State and Federal Prisoners"). At the end of each chapter, the reader will find completed examples of the forms required to be filed in order to start their bankruptcy case. The reader will also find blank forms at the end of this book, which may be removed, filled out, and filed with the appropriate bankruptcy court. Of course, this book is not just for the type of debt discussed above, it is for the prisoner (or nonprisoner) who has outstanding debts and wants a fresh start. "SMITH'S GUIDE to Chapter 7 Bankruptcy for Prisoners" is an invaluable resource guide for prisoners and civilians alike, who need financial freedom from their past debts.
