The discussions and negotiations held at Cecilienhof Palace from 17 July to 2 August 1945 staked out zones and spheres of influence and had a political impact on the post-war period that reached far beyond Europe. The volume shows how the Big Three-Churchill, Truman and Stalin-reached their resolutions. And it highlights what effects these resolutions had not only on the defeated Germans, but also on the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans who were still at war; on the displaced persons and Holocaust survivors who had no voice in Potsdam; on the Persians whose fate was decided without consulting their interests or wishes; and on the French who were among the victorious powers but had not been invited to the conference. The Potsdam Agreement subsequently signed by the three heads of state thus laid the foundations for the reorganisation of the world.

Being refused admittance to the Association of Visual Artists, and deprived of public exhibition opportunities in the GDR, he managed to open, in conjunction with others, opportunities for himself: through jam sessions in the studio, collective (over)paintings with the "Lücke" artist group or by shooting, together with Wolfgang Opitz, Super-8 films. Here, alongside vases from China and Japan, King August III presented the finest products of his manufactory at Meissen, on gilded consoles against red-lacquered wall panels. In the bombing of Dresden in February 1945 the royal palace was almost entirely consumed by fire; as for the porcelain pieces, despite having been evacuated in 1943, the majority of them fell prey to plundering and destruction. Now that the porcelain cabinet has been reconstructed, some of the extant pieces - notably the spectacular 'Elements' garniture modelled by Johann Joachim Kaendler and two 'Dragoons' vases - can be displayed again. Additionally, ten silver guéridons serve as a reminder of the room's earlier function as a 'Silver Buffet'. This book traces the history of the cabinet from its origins in the 1730s to its destruction in 1945. It includes a comprehensive Catalogue section in which the losses from the Tower Room's holdings are presented on the basis of the documentation of the porcelain collection undertaken in 1941.

The paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphics presented here open up new perspectives focus on the gentle, yet critical voices and thus point beyond the style of art decreed by the East German state. Even traditional genres such as portrait, landscape and still life, in their refusal to bow to ideological objectives, here offer an unexpected view of GDR reality. Its emphasis is on the artistic quality and the specificity of the Schwerin collection. Dreams, desires and projections are what come to the fore in these pictures and sculptures which make the horizon tangible, not as a rigid limit but as a space of free imagination and association. The tension between intimacy and world-view gave rise to a specific artistic language that went beyond the stereotypes of Socialist Realism and also found expression in actions and performances.A selection of exhibits from the Schwerin Mail Art archive shows that the Mail artist network then in existence facilitated a kind of a cross-border communication. Items on loan from artists such as Michael Morgner and Holger Stark give insight into Action and Performance Art with some reference to Mecklenburg. The richly-illustrated catalog will be published in German and English. Well-researched essays by historians and art historians demonstrate the importance and uniqueness of the Schwerin collection.

Objects are manipulated, restored, appropriated, staged, in short displayed, through various representational strategies that include pedestals, labels, and showcases. These elements, that we could define as parerga, are often ignored because of their utilitarian function. Yet, they play an important role in the history of the artefacts and define the setting in which the objects can exert their agency. They not only shape their meaning, but also determine the effect that these artefacts have on their viewers. Framing devices create the conditions for interactions between the individual and the object to take place. This publication aims to explore the relation between artefacts and viewers as they are manifested in framing devices, and to develop a new theoretical framework for thinking about the power of objects on display.
