New techniques - notably Scarf, the first metatarsal osteotomy and the Weil osteotomy of the lesser metatarsal - provide a significant improvement in the treatment of static forefoot disorders.
Pushed by the progress of biology, technology and biomechanics, knee surgery has dramatically evolved in the last decades. This book is a "state of the art" concerning all aspects of knee surgery from ligament reconstruction to Total Knee Arthroplasty.
This book describes the challenges involved in developing mTOR inhibitors for cancer treatment, starting with an in-depth examination of their molecular mechanism of action, with emphasis on the class side-effects, efficacy and mechanisms of resistance, as well as on promising novel directions for their development, including novel compounds and rational combinations with other anti-neoplastic drugs. Over the last 10 years, inhibitors of mTOR have emerged as a major class of anticancer drugs. Two rapamycin analogs are currently approved for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma, and it is estimated that a variety of other tumor types could benefit from mTOR inhibition, with numerous clinical trials (including pivotal registration trials) already underway. Second-generation small-molecule inhibitors of the pathway have also shown promise in terms of their superior tolerability and efficacy and are undergoing extensive clinical evaluation, with an estimated 30+ compoundscurrently under evaluation.
It has by now been established that carpal ligamentary lesions may lead to instability and ultimately to carpal arthritis.
The purpose of this book is to define the basis of telemicrosurgery, a new discipline at the border of robotics and microsurgery. After the history of robotics and microsurgery, the robots and their instrumentation will be described. The chapters will explain the training in telemicrosurgery and then propose some experimental paradigms.
However, due to the intrinsic heterogeneity and molecular complexity of biologic medicinal products, their copies cannot simply be authorized under the "generic rule" valid for small chemical entities. In response, a dedicated regulation was issued in the European Union.
The scientific advances in the physiology and pathophysiology of adipose tissue over the last two decades have been considerable. Finally, it is a unique and original work focusing on adipose tissue, covering biology and pathology by investigating aspects of molecular and cellular biology, general, metabolic, genetic and genomic biochemistry.
Neglected finger injuries may lead to chronic lesions that often have detrimental consequences for the practice of a ball sport, whether at a recreational level or at the top athlete level.
This book reviews recent advances in understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of angiogenesis, with a focus on how to integrate these observations into the context of developmental, post-natal and pathological neovascularization.
This book creates a unique platform that covers main ankle pathologies specifically related with football. Experiences from professional players have been combined with evidence-based medical content from renowned experts in the field to present a comprehensive picture on ankle injuries in football.
This book pursues a multidisciplinary approach, presenting chapters with updated information on various aspects of treatment for patients with neuroendocrine tumors.
This book examines the link between mental health and pain. It will serve as an innovative tool presenting psychiatric disorders such as major depression, schizophrenia, and addiction.
Focal therapy is a promising option for selected patients who have localized low or intermediate-risk prostate cancer, providing a compelling alternative between active surveillance and radical therapies by targeting the index lesion and preserving as much tissue as possible.
The focus is on basic information on every orthopedic subspecialty, including: surgical anatomy, basic sciences, adult reconstruction, pediatric orthopedics, foot and ankle surgery, orthopedic pathology, the spine, sports surgery, upper limb, wrist and hand surgery, and orthopedic traumas.
The Galdakao-modified supine Valdivia position allowed the development of ECIRS (Endoscopic Combined IntraRenal Surgery), a technique exploiting a combined antegrade and retrograde approach to the upper urinary tract, using both rigid and flexible endoscopes with the related accessories.
Many tendon transfers are reported as latissimus dorsi, teres major, split of anterior deltoid and pectoralis major. The goal of this book is to remind the biomechanical and anatomical basis of these tendon transfers and to report tips and tricks and results of these techniques.
The comfortable boundaries of static architectures and well-defined limits and owners are not existent in these AmI ecosystems. In its second year AmI.d again shows the heterogeneity of research challenges related to Ambient Intelligence.
A century of technical progress, critical analyses, and clinical comparisons have shaped exercise testing in cardiology as we know it today: a simple, noninvasive physiological test that yields irreplaceable information on an individual's physical capacity and ischemic risk.
During the last 10-12 years, the research on homocysteine has become very active. A disturbed homocysteine metabolism can be an underlying factor for pregnancy complications and fetal malformations, cardiovascular disease, dementia, psychiatric and neurologic disorders and possibly carcinogenesis.
The first comprehensive book about surgery on and around the vertebral artery all along its cervical and intracranial course, this heavily-illustrated text covers all surgical aspects from anatomy and imaging to techniques and pathologies.
This book details the fundamentals of Health informatics. It examines the main features of the software developed in the major structures of Health with applications in various countries.
A report that proposes a novel analytical framework, so that everyone can form his/her opinion on a series of key questions: The European Union and the Crisis: between doubts and necessity; Facing the Economic and Financial Crisis: strategy for growth and employment; and the summary of political Europe: analysis of European elections 2011.
The first comprehensive book about surgery on and around the vertebral artery all along its cervical and intracranial course, this heavily-illustrated text covers all surgical aspects from anatomy and imaging to techniques and pathologies.
Held in Sophia Antipolis (France) from September the 20th to September the 22nd 2006, the first edition of the AmI.d conference tackled the latest research challenges within AmI ecosystems, presented AmI applications as well as security solutions.
Rehabilitation and palliation have become an essential part of modern comprehensive cancer care. This book contains experiences of the author and specific instructions how to assess, treat, and evaluate rehabilitation and palliation in cancer patients.
