Matsuo's hometown, Sasebo, is a city of shipyard industry located on the western edge of Japan, with a beautiful port of the U.S. Navy and Japan Self-Defense Forces. This photobook captures 79 portraits of 17-year-old teenagers on the streets of Sasebo where tangled alleys of a hilly city are exclusively unique.
Located in the west of Japan and surrounded by the sea and mountains, Sasebo has developed rapidly in the late 1900s as a U.S. Navy base and shipyard town. To rediscover and introduce the city's allure, Japanese photographer Osamu Matsuo, who was born and grew up in this unique town, started his "Sasebo Project" 3 years ago. For the third installment of this project, HEAVY METAL presents more than 50 portraits of shipyard workers and photos of shipbuilding factories.
