Because children enter school with thoughts, ideas, and experiences related to their family, home, and neighborhood, the Make a List word lists for the beginning of the school year build on these experiences. They aim to broaden a young child's experiences and expand his ideas for writing. The ability to create ideas is central to writing, and the development of vocabulary is a necessary component. The beginning writer needs support to generate ideas and build background knowledge and vocabulary prior to writing. Like word walls and personal dictionaries, Make A List word lists give beginning writers a tool that will help them effectively and independently engage in the writing process. The word lists also provide the beginning writer with a semantic organizer to assist in the development of concepts and comprehension.
* develop spatial and problem solving skills * explore the alphabet * sharpen perceptual and letter identification skills In this reproducible book children use tangram pieces to cover letters of the alphabet. Each letter puzzle is shown twice: first as a beginning puzzle that includes the outline of each of the tangram pieces within the letter shapes and then as a challenge puzzle with out the tangram piece outlines within the letter shape. Your students will sharpen their problem solving skills as they slide, turn and flip the pieces to fit within each puzzle. Included are suggestions for games to play and in the back of the book are tangram templates to reproduce for use with the book.

Poetry is such a perfect way to introduce kindergartners to the early stages of literacy. It's brief. It's fun. It's got rhythm! The poems in this personal poetry collection have been carefully crafted to meet the specific needs of kindergartners. Themes and topics used by most kindergarten teachers are the focus of the collection. There are poems about friendship and family, the seasons, the first and last day of school, animals, and much, much more. Most of the poems are from four to six lines long, making tracking easier for the emergent reader. The longer poems have very few words per line or include lots of repetition. In addition, an "anchor word" begins nearly every title and poem. Having a high frequency word as the first word of the title and the poem gives kinders a sense of confidence. Once they've read a word that is an old friend, off they go!
Teachers working with primary students, second language learners, and special education students will find this book filled with ready-to-use, hands-on templates for picture sorting (helping students hear and feel the sounds of the words) and word sorting (helping students see the patterns of the vowel sounds within words)-an excellent transitional step toward word sorting! 129 picture sorts are in a developmental sequence, increasing in difficulty and complexity. The sorts are organized in 5 sections: concept, initial consonant, blends and digraphs, short vowel, and long vowel sorts. A brief introduction helps teachers match the appropriate sort to the developmental level of the students. Then, with teacher observation, the students can move through the sorts as their phonemic awareness increases.
