"The Effect of Tropical Light on White Men is "a skewed and illustrated encyclopedia of the Caribbean island of Dominica." Working with a book designer, and conducting research that draws material from a wide range of archival sources as well as from the artist's family history, Catherine Lord creates a work that functions as both a museum and a memoir. The book takes an unconventional approach to understanding Caribbean history and culture through an investigation of its flora, fauna, cooking, and "bad art objects" made by its European colonizers. By gathering source materials from whites who have left the Caribbean for Western countries worldwide, The Effect of Tropical Light on White Men attempts to broaden the dialogue on issues of colonialism, race, and cultural property."--from Creative Capital website.

"More Voices of the Radium Age will showcase proto- and early sf stories by much-admired authors best known today for their non-sf work (E. Nesbit, author of Three Children and It and other popular children's fantasies, and Booth Tarkington, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Magnificent Ambersons); authors whose outsized success with readers would influence the subsequent development of the sf genre (H.G. Wells, who continued to make startling predictions in the early 20th century, and Abraham Merritt and George Allan England, who along with Edgar Rice Burroughs ushered in the crucial era of the pulp scientific romance); as well as writers who have now fallen into obscurity (George C. Wallis, the Russian Symbolist litterateur Valery Bryusov, "weird" horror master Algernon Blackwood, and Francis Stevens, "the woman who invented dark fantasy"). Note that Nesbit and Stevens are two of sf's only female writers pre-1926"--

A surprising vision of how human intelligence will coevolve with digital technology and revolutionize how we think and behave. It is natural for us to fear artificial intelligence. But does Siri really want to kill us? Perhaps we are falling into the trap of projecting human traits onto the machines we might build. In Evolutionary Intelligence, Neuman offers a surprisingly positive vision in which computational intelligence compensates for the well-recognized limits of human judgment, improves decision making, and actually increases our agency. In artful, accessible, and adventurous prose, Neuman takes the reader on an exciting, fast-paced ride, all the while making a convincing case about a revolution in computationally augmented human intelligence.Neuman argues that, just as the wheel made us mobile and machines made us stronger, the migration of artificial intelligence from room-sized computers to laptops to our watches, smart glasses, and even smart contact lenses will transform day-to-day human decision making. If intelligence is the capacity to match means with ends, then augmented intelligence can offer the ability to adapt to changing environments as we face the ultimate challenge of long-term survival.Tapping into a global interest in technology’s potential impacts on society, economics, and culture, Evolutionary Intelligence demonstrates that our future depends on our ability to computationally compensate for the limitations of a human cognitive system that has only recently graduated from hunting and gathering.

A wide-ranging, first-of-its-kind anthology of art and writing exploring how surveillance impacts contemporary motherhood. The tracking of our personal information, activities, and medical data through our digital devices is an increasingly recognizable field in which the lines between caretaking and control have blurred. In this age of surveillance, mothers' behaviors and bodies are observed, made public, exposed, scrutinized, and policed like never before. Supervision: On Motherhood and Surveillance gathers together the work of fifty contributors from diverse disciplines that include the visual arts, legal scholarship, ethnic studies, sociology, gender studies, poetry, and activism to ask what the relationship is between how we watch and how we are watched, and how the attention that mothers pay to their children might foster a kind of counterattention to the many ways in which mothers are scrutinized.A groundbreaking collection, Supervision is a project about vision (and supervision), and all the ways in which vision intersects with surveillance and politics, through motherhood and personal history as well as through the histories and relations of the societies in which we live.Contributors:Melina Abdullah, Jeny Amaya, Gemma, Anderson, Nurcan Atalan-Helicke, Sarah Blackwood, Lisa Cartwright, Cary Beth Cryor, Moyra Davey, Duae Collective, Sabba Elahi, Laura Fong Prosper, Regina José Galindo, Michele Goodwin, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Lily Gurton-Wachter, Sophie Hamacher, Jessica Hankey, Keeonna Harris, Laëtitia Badaut Haussmann, Jennifer Hayashida, Kenyatta A.C. An exploration of the much-derided English suburbs through rap music. There are many different Englands. From the much-romanticized rolling countryside, to the cosmopolitanism of the inner cities (embraced by some as progressive, multicultural enlightenment and derided by others as the playground of a self-righteous metropolitan elite), or the disparagingly named "left behind" communities which, post-Brexit, have so interested political parties and pundits, demographers and statisticians. But there is also an England no one cares about. The England of semi-detached houses and clean driveways for multiple cars devotedly washed on Sundays, of "twitching curtains" and Laura Ashley sofas; of cul-de-sacs to nowhere and exaggerated accents; of late night drives to petrol stations on A roads, fake IDs tested in Harvesters, and faded tracksuits and over-gelled hair in Toby Carverys; of questionable hash from a "mate of a mate" and two-litre bottles of White Lightning from Budgens consumed in a kids playground. Much derided. Unglamorous, ordinary; cultural vacuity and small "c" conservatism. A hodgepodge. An—apparently—middling, middle-of-the-road middle-England of middle-class middle-mindedness. Part poetry anthology, part academic study into placemaking, and part autoethnography, The England No One Cares About innovatively brings together academic discussions of the ethnographic potential of lyrics, scholastic representations of suburbia, and thematic analysis to explore how rap music can illuminate the experiences of young men growing up in suburbia. This takes place by exploring the author’s own annotated lyrics from his career as a musician known as Context where he was referred to by the BBC as "Middle England’s Poet Laureate."

A handbook that activates Kader Attia’s proposition of decolonial repair, featuring original essays and conversations from diverse global contributors.Today’s entwined crises, from ecological catastrophe to the COVID-19 pandemic to wars in Ukraine and across the world, reveal deep-seated wounds that issue from historical colonialisms and present-day authoritarianisms, economic disparity and growing racial violence, and the abuses inflicted on vulnerable populations and the planet. To address this disquieting chaos, Fragments of Repair, co-conceptualized by artist and curator Kader Attia with curators and researchers Maria Hlavajova and Wietske Maas, offers a collection of long- and short-form essays, visual essays, and conversations on decolonial repair as both a tool and a tactic of engagement with the current state of the world. The book, which includes major voices such as that of Achille Mbembe and Ruth Wilson Gilmore, develops Attia’s ongoing inquiry into the possibility of enacting “repair” in the acute context of brokenness, which brings chronic uncertainty, social isolation, exhaustion, loss, and fear into sharper relief. What pathways could repair, rather than return to, past ways? How can we develop collective tools for emancipation and resistance? And, in the face of what is irreparable, how can we meaningfully address wounds and scars, which are deeply tied to European modernity?Contributors:Norman Ajari, Kader Attia,  Souleymane Bachir Diagne,  Momar Gueye, Maria Hlavajova, Kader Attia, Wietske Maas, Catherine Malabou, Olivier Marboeuf, Achille Mbembe, Wayne Modest, Omedi Ochieng, Stefania Pandolfo, Luciana Parisi, Rachael Rakes,  Rolando Vázquez, Françoise Vergès, Eyal Weizman, Ruth Wilson GilmoreA BASICS series reader copublished with BAK, basis voor actuele kunst.

"Having assembled a crew of adventurers, the brilliant, blustering physiologist and physicist Professor Challenger journeys to a South American jungle ... in search of a lost plateau crawling with iguanodons. It's a ripping yarn-the first popular dinosaurs-still-live tale, prototype for everything from King Kong to Jurassic Park. At the same time, however, it's a philosophical novel, one that animates-in a thrilling, humorous fashion-the author's obsessive drive (also seen in his Sherlock Holmes stories) to reconcile the claims of logical reason and intuition. In their second adventure, Challenger et al. discover that the planet is about to pass through a belt of poisonous ether which will destroy all life on Earth. However, Challenger has transformed his wife's dressing room into an airtight chamber, so they can witness the end of the world. An epistemological thriller"--

A rich exploration of the extraordinary life and work of celebrated architect Yasmeen Lari, winner of the 2023 RIBA Royal Gold Medal. After more than three decades as a renowned global architect, Yasmeen Lari, the first woman to open her own architecture firm in Pakistan in 1964, developed Zero Carbon Architecture, which unites ecological and social justice. This volume, edited by Angelika Fitz, Elke Krasny, and Marvi Mazhar, presents Lari’s trajectory from exemplary modernist to zero carbon revolutionary, with a focus on her remarkable contributions to the global architectural movement to decarbonize and decolonize. The book includes extensive photographs, drawings, and plans from Lari’s archive, most of which have not previously been shown or published.Lari’s architectural thinking and activism have always gone beyond the quest for a singular built solution. Rather, she strategically plans systemic approaches and solutions, be it for housing, a heritage foundation, or zero-carbon shelters with communities at risk. Original essays from diverse international contributors contextualize Lari’s work; investigate architecture and the postimperial, postcolonial, and postpartition condition; and examine the intersections of architecture and human rights, climate change, decolonization, gender, care, activism, and vernacular innovation. More than a tribute to Yasmeen Lari’s extraordinary career, this volume brings her legacy forward and shows how to create change today.Contributors:Abira Ashfaq, Cassandra Cozza, Angelika Fitz, Runa Kahn, Anne Karpf, Elke Krasny, Marvi Mazhar, Chris Moffat, Anila Naeem, Raquel Rolnik, Helen Thomas, Rafia Zakaria

What altered states of consciousness—the dissolution of feelings of time and self—can tell us about the mystery of consciousness.During extraordinary moments of consciousness—shock, meditative states and sudden mystical revelations, out-of-body experiences, or drug intoxication—our senses of time and self are altered; we may even feel time and self dissolving. These experiences have long been ignored by mainstream science, or considered crazy fantasies. Recent research, however, has located the neural underpinnings of these altered states of mind. In this book, neuropsychologist Marc Wittmann shows how experiences that disturb or widen our everyday understanding of the self can help solve the mystery of consciousness.Wittmann explains that the relationship between consciousness of time and consciousness of self is close; in extreme circumstances, the experiences of space and self intensify and weaken together. He considers the emergence of the self in waking life and dreams; how our sense of time is distorted by extreme situations ranging from terror to mystical enlightenment; the experience of the moment; and the loss of time and self in such disorders as depression, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. Dostoyevsky reported godly bliss during epileptic seizures; neurologists are now investigating the phenomenon of the epileptic aura. Wittmann describes new studies of psychedelics that show how the brain builds consciousness of self and time, and discusses pilot programs that use hallucinogens to treat severe depression, anxiety, and addiction. If we want to understand our consciousness, our subjectivity, Wittmann argues, we must not be afraid to break new ground. Studying altered states of consciousness leads us directly to the heart of the matter: time and self, the foundations of consciousness.

An acute reappraisal for our time of the very concept of revolution. In order to be effective, union struggles, struggles for national liberation, worker mutualism, or struggles for emancipation were strategies that were necessarily connected to revolution. Starting from the historic defeat of the global Revolution in the mid-1970s, this book draws a portrait—whose elaboration is still lacking—of the concept of revolution. What conditions could lead us to speak of revolution once again? In The Intolerable Present, the Urgency of Revolution, Maurizio Lazzarato ponders the fundamental importance of the passage from the historical class struggle (the conflict between capital and labor) to the more recent class struggles that open onto plural trajectories: social, sexual, gender, and race struggles. Expanding the notion of class as a rejoinder to the normative appropriation of minority politics, the revolution is returned as the horizon where subjection can be resorbed. In this sense, Marxist, feminist, anticolonial, and postcolonial theories provide the necessary critical tools to understand the relations between classes and minorities, between the global North and the global South, and between the time of revolutions and the eruption of new subjectivities.
