God has provided believers with His baseline truth. Everything else we read in Scripture can be compared to the baseline truth to provide us with the certainty of whether or not we are correctly interpreting what we read. This baseline of truth forms a foundation. The foundation supports and sustains all that is built on it!The writer of the Book of Hebrews identified a foundation for New Covenant Faith. These seven doctrines provide the basis for faith that is unshakable and immovable. They also provide a spiritual GPS that ensures we will never "run off the rails" with strange doctrine. Furthermore, it provides a path to ensure that we grow to be spiritually mature believers who can not only stand strong for ourselves but can also become teachers and leaders who guard and guide the flock of God! These seven doctrines comprise a shield of truth that will guard our hearts and minds against spiritual deception.As you read the following pages, I would encourage you to use the seven doctrines to evaluate your current beliefs about God. Any place you find a discrepancy between the foundations of the faith and your current beliefs, make the proper adjustments.

In the summer of 1893, N. J Holmes initiated the foundation of Holmes Bible College with Bible study among several people on Paris Mountain, South Carolina. From that first summer session to today, Holmes Bible College has been non-denominational, a faith school to train men and women as Gospel ministers by establishing churches or missionaries for the home missions or the foreign lands. This history seeks to provide insight into the persons and places and, most importantly, allow the voices of Holmes students, supporters, and professors to witness the Divine direction in establishing Holmes Bible College. Listen closely to these voices as you will witness life changes for God's glory and workers entering the harvest fields.We will look at the context of Greenville County and the South. It is important to understand any obstacles that challenged the school's formation in the Post-Reconstruction Era. A brief biography of Holmes invites us to look at informative life events leading to God's Call on his life as a lawyer and pastor. His biography introduces many leading Holiness/Pentecostal pastors and denominations. These facts aid in establishing a theological foundation for the school. The school's movement from Paris Mountain to Atlanta, Georgia to Columbia, South Carolina, and eventually its return to Paris Mountain. Then Paris Mountain relocated led to Briggs Avenue as the school grew. Finally, a new campus resides in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. Allow the story of the world's oldest Pentecostal Bible School to provide eyes, hearts, and a vision for your future ministry. As the school's Founder and first President, N. J. Holmes states his vision for the mission and purpose of Holmes Bible College: "The purpose of the school from the very beginning has been to serve men and women of all denominations who are called to the ministry. Advent to Epiphany is the first volume in the From Text to Sermon series designed to help pastors and their flocks better understand the rhythm and purpose of the Christian calendar. As Christians, we view time from a different perspective than the rest of the world. We may use the same seconds, minutes, hours, dates, and days, but we view the meaning and purpose of history and the future by considering God's actions through the children of Abraham and through His only begotten Son, Jesus of Nazareth. Certain events in the Bible, though over two thousand years old, provide the key to discerning the times in which we live. That's why we remember Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. We read the forerunners of these events in the Hebrew Scriptures and find their meaning through the lens of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit as we attempt to live out an "ancient but present faith" in a society where biblical literacy is increasingly non-existent. In this book, we begin with Advent, the four Sundays prior to Christmas Day, and conclude with Epiphany, or revelation of who Jesus is for the Gentiles at the close of the Twelve Days of Christmas. My goal is that the tools provided here will help you as you study, pray, and prepare to preach and teach the Word of God in this season.

There are some truths only poetry can teach, some places within us that only poetry can reach. Encephalitis almost ended Chris Maxwell's life.
