Malcolm X Visits Abroad (April 1964 - February 1965) illuminates the life of the revolutionary Malcolm X, who became a very controversial and influential figure during the civil rights struggle in the United States. On February 21, 1965 the world was shocked by his sudden assassination in New York. Although much is known about Malcolm X, very little attention has been given to his heavily impactful travels around the world. In the last two years of his life, Malcolm travelled abroad many times, to Africa, the Middle East and Europe, meeting with both presidents and political activists. Malcolm X Visits Abroad, taken primarily from Malcolm's travel notebooks, newspaper coverage, and first-hand interviews, is the first publication to address this vital part of Malcolm's life. His visits abroad were extremely important in shaping his own outlook and defining his role in the world, and are crucial in understanding the ever mysterious and intriguing Malcolm X. Content:1. • - Letters home from liberated Ethiopia 1941-1945
    af Christian Curle
    377,95 kr.

In his vivid letters home to his father in the Scottish Borders, Sandy Curle (1900-80) paints an engaging picture of 1940s Ethiopia - supported by over 100 illustrations and comprehensive explanatory notes.During the liberation, Sandy had led his Ethiopian irregular troops up from Kenya, but he had not seen his wife for three years or their new daughter - the editor of this book - at all. As part of the new Ethiopian government, he observes tensions between the restored Haile Selassie and the veterans of colonial administration. Sent to Jimma in 1943 to advise the governor of the south-west, he wins the trust of the 'old school' Ras Birru, and helps support the Emperor's modernising policies on the ground. His family is at last able to join him here in 1944 after an adventurous wartime voyage.Full of telling detail, the letters bring alive a complex society recovering from the unpredictable and brutal Italian occupation. Sandy's extensive social circle includes friends across the nations from his 20 years in East Africa, old comrades and, of course, Scots. He shares with us his wide interests in archaeology, religion and the natural world together with domestic worries and family drama.* * * * * "This book of most engaging letters describes the rebirth of the Ethiopian Christian empire from two vantage points, the cosmopolitan capital of Addis Ababa and the rich provincial center of Jimma, giving the book a unique view of a major turning point in Ethiopian history. These collected letters give a fascinating insider's view of an Ethiopia liberated from fascist Italian rule. The editors have retained the author's pronounced and often not a political correct voice. It has a distinct focus on his relationship with and the life of, a traditional Ethiopian lord, the illegitimate son of a previous powerful emperor. Revelations of corruption, semi slavery, old time adventurers and petty thievery abound. A fascinating read much to be recommended.Written by an adviser of Emperor Haile Sellasie, this book's foundation is a series of most engaging letters written by a son to his father which follow the end of the Italian East African Empire and the rebirth of the Ethiopian empire. They describe the cosmopolitan and quirky capital of Ethiopia (Addis Ababa) and then focus on the distant Muslim provincial capital of Christian Ethiopia, Jimma. There the author was hosted by its historic Muslim Sultan and the aristocratic Ethiopian lord appointed by the Emperor to rule arguably the country's richest province. This is a must read to understand the fascinating and complex immediate post WWII background of modern Ethiopia, describing the re-establishment of the Ethiopian empire after the Italian conquest.A fascinating primary source on Ethiopia with political, economic and social information not to be found in any other published source. The book is excellently edited and has very fine illustrations."FROM Professor Peter Garretson, Florida State University and biographer of Dr. Hakim Warquenah

  • - The Activities and Significance of the Gu Len Movement
    af David Shinn
    377,95 - 677,95 kr.

Hizmet in Africa: The Activities and Significance of the Gulen Movement is the only book-length work that analyzes the multifaceted activities in Africa of the followers of Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen, who has lived in exile in rural Pennsylvania since 1999. In 2008, Foreign Policy magazine named Gulen as the world s top public intellectual. Gulen and the followers of his philosophy refer to the Movement as Hizmet or volunteers service while others tend to call it the Gulen Movement. The book includes Hizmet in both North Africa and Sub-Sahara Africa. There are more than 100 Gulen-inspired primary, middle and secondary schools in Africa and the number is growing. Some African cities have a Gulen-affiliated dialogue or interfaith center and organization of businessmen who follow Gulen s principles. There is a global charitable organization Kimse Yok Mu that has extensive operations in Africa. The Gulen-affiliated media empire based in Turkey and New Jersey now reaches out to Africa. Gulen-inspired projects include a university in Nigeria, the largest mosque in the southern hemisphere in South Africa, a hospital in Somalia, and student dormitories in Morocco. This Movement did not exist in Africa twenty years ago. Relatively few Africans and outsiders are aware of its activities in Africa. The schools, for example, are often known as Turkish schools. Few people understand they are linked to Hizmet or the Gulen Movement. The book documents Hizmet activity based on visits in 2012 and 2013 to South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Senegal, Morocco, and Turkey and meetings with a wide range of Hizmet representatives working in other countries in Africa. It also draws on journalistic reports of Hizmet activity and that which has been published in academic books, journals, and papers. The book analyzes the significance of the Movement for both Turkey and Africa and explores the link between the Movement and Turkish business persons, who provide most of the funding. "

The book by Dr. Taddesse Tamrat is an important contribution. ... In fact, the author shows his full and precise knowledge of past literature on Ethiopia, and his critical analysis of historical events is well founded on the results of recent work; but also-and this is an important novelty-he had access to hagiographical and historical documents, kept in Ethiopian monasteries, which had not previously been known to scholars. ... - Professor Enrico Cerulli, in BSOAS, Vol. 37, 1972. Once in a long while, books are written that set the standard in their discipline. Taddesse Tamrat's Church and State has been just such a book, a classic in Ethiopian historiography, unsurpassed in its painstaking reconstruction of the medieval history of Ethiopia. Few historians have used the rich historical data of the gadl literature as exhaustively and as meticulously as Taddesse has done, teasing out crucial information as only an Ethiopian versed in church traditions could do. Equally significant for the value of the book has been the blending of these Ethiopian traditional sources with the rich contemporary Arabic sources and the commentaries and analyses of such authorities as Carlo Conti Rossini. In short, what Taddesse has done through this masterly reconstruction is to blaze the trail that other Ethiopian historians have followed, a process that culminated in the growth and ripening of professional Ethiopian historiography. - Professor Bahru Zewde is the author of A History of Modern Ethiopia Professor Taddesse Tamrat's magisterial historical work Church and State in Ethiopia, 1270-1527, documents the rise and expansion of a new dynasty in highland Christian Ethiopia and the simultaneous growth of Ethiopian monasticism as an intellectual and cultural force. Based upon a broad range of primary sources previously either unknown or not utilized, this book remains the essential text for the history of the highland Christian state of Ethiopia during the period of its development as the dominant state in the Horn of Africa. This seminal work established the historical foundation for subsequent studies in the history of highland Ethiopia, including specialized cultural and historical analyses of theology, music and religious art. - Professor Marilyn E. • - A PERSONAL ACCOUNT of ETHIOPIA's MODERNIZATION and PAINFUL QUEST for DEMOCRACY
    af Tekalign Gedamu
    412,95 kr.

Republicans on the Throne is a memoir spanning the author Tekalign Gedamu's early life during the waning days of the old feudal order, his six-decade career in the United Nations, the African Development Bank, and the government of Ethiopia. The book describes the author's university education and early career as an international civil servant. It focuses on Ethiopia's modernization and her painful quest for democracy. For a brief spell, the author was privileged to be an eyewitness and a modest participant to that process. Republicans on the Throne offers a glimpse into the problems of a new educational system. The expansion of education left in its wake a demand for more fundamental reforms which Emperor Haile Selassie's government was increasingly unable to meet. The result was a coup d'etat in 1960 that failed and another in 1974 that succeeded and triggered a 'Marxist' revolution that promised a new era of equality, democracy, and revitalized nationalism. The book examines closely the fundamental forces behind the revolution along with its failed attempts to improve the country's fortunes on both the economic and political fronts."
