The Charter of the United Nations was signed in 1945 by 51 countries representing all continents, paving the way for the creation of the United Nations on 24 October 1945. The Statute of the International Court of Justice forms part of the Charter. The Charter is the foundation of international peace and security.

The discipline of education in India has developed over 150 years, beginning in the colonial period, when the British government established the first schools in the Presidencies that responded to the growth of the discipline in the West. Following Independence, the discipline's growth has been shaped in response to education policies of successive governments, which has changed the direction of the discipline of education as a field of scholarship and practice. Education, Teaching, and Learning brings together leading teachers, researchers, and practitioners in the field of education, whose work represent instances of significant departures in the discipline of Education in India over the last thirty years. The chapters focus on two core practices that define the discipline of education in the university: the practice of preparing teachers, and educational research as social inquiry.

In such cultural encounters, amnesia plays a major role in defining the self-perception of cultures. The trauma of Partition is an indelible part of the collective memory of the citizens of India and Pakistan and, later, Bangladesh. With over 15 million displaced and several million dead on both sides of the Radcliffe Line, this massive exodus remains forever a black mark in history. Partition and its aftermath have been central to much of subcontinental cinema, and found frequent and varied representation on screen. Tear-Drenched Earth looks at landmark films from the 1950s to the 2010s that depict aspects of the Partition, such as Gandhi, Chinnamul, Meghe Dhaka Tara, Viceroy's House, Tamas, Garm Hawa, Pinjar and Toba Tek Singh.Focusing on films that highlight the tragic absurdity of a historic catastrophe unprecedented in scale and devastation, and the unimaginable horror of its consequences, John W. Hood studies the ways in which it affected lives on both sides of the divide. He examines the ideas of nation, self, faith, identity, family, love, home and memory in the wake of Partition, and shows how religion and politics are inextricably linked and how they shaped Partition violence. He also reflects on how the newly-drawn borders of the newborn nations created and reinforced notions of the Other that fostered a blind lust for revenge and mindless violence which continued long after Partition, as witnessed in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the 2002 Godhra massacre.

Like Yuddhishthira, who is faced with the puzzling questions posed to him by the enigmatic Yaksha in the Mahabharata, the Indian Everyman, conscious of dharma and niti, is expected to find answers to ethical and existential dilemmas. FDI can support the investments needed for countries to move towards more inclusive and sustainable development, but, as ECLAC has argued in successive editions of this report, that does not happen automatically. Policies are needed to provide the necessary framework so that FDI entering the region is directed towards activities that support virtuous development in respect of inclusiveness, employment quality, environmental sustainability, innovation and technological sophistication. Given the growing complexity of the international landscape, it is becoming increasingly necessary to establish national and multilateral development strategies in the region and to coordinate public and private efforts so that Latin America and the Caribbean can position itself in the global economic landscape in a way that helps it to move towards inclusive and sustainable development, rather than being relegated to a marginal role determined by exogenous strategies.

Le Rapport étudie les inégalités de développement humain en allant au-delà des revenus, des moyennes et du temps présent. Il s’interroge sur les formes d’inégalités qui comptent et leurs moteurs, reconnaissant que les inégalités pernicieuses sont généralement mieux perçues comme un symptôme de problèmes d’une plus grande ampleur dans une société ou une économie. Il cherche également à déterminer quelles politiques sont susceptibles de s’attaquer à ces moteurs – des politiques qui peuvent aider les pays à faire avancer leur économie tout en améliorant le développement humain et en réduisant les inégalités.
