Marking Time: Performance, archaeology and the city charts a genealogy of alternative practices of theatre-making since the 1960s in one particular city Cardiff. In a series of five itineraries, it visits fifty sites where significant events occurred, setting performances within local topographical and social contexts, and in relation to a specific architecture and polity. These sites from disused factories to scenes of crime, from auditoria to film sets it regards as landmarks in the conception of a history of performance.Marking Time uses performance and places as a means to reflect on the character of the city itself its history, its fabric and make-up, its cultural ecology and its changing nature. Long out of print and now published together for the first time, these three volumes of autobiography of the Cornish author and schoolteacher Anne Treneer cover the period from her birth at Gorran in 1891 to her retirement from teaching in 1948.The first volume, School House in the Wind, covers her early childhood in Cornwall until 1906. Cornish Years takes her to Truro, Exmouth and Exeter, and from there to Camborne, Liverpool and Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. A Stranger in the Midlands covers the years between 1931 and 1947, when she taught at King Edwards High School for Girls in Birmingham. As well as a substantial introduction, the book includes a short biography of Anne Treneer, continuing her story to her death in 1966, and a descriptive bibliography of her writings.

Poems to Lisi is presented here as an undergraduate student text with parallel-text English verse translationsThis edition of Quevedo's Poems to Lisi is a successor to the same editor's original text in Exeter Hispanic Texts, which only contained the Spanish text of the poems (published in 1988). Rather than reprint that edition, the editor has chosen to make the text more widely available by setting his own English verse translations alongside the Spanish originals. It is intended to provide undergraduates in Hispanic Studies with an accessible edition of a key work of the Spanish Golden Age. The translations are close enough to the originals to be of value to those who have an adequate knowledge of Spanish, while the rendering of the poems into English verse (mainly blank verse sonnets) will enable those lacking such a knowledge to read them as poems in their own right.

Gregoire Le Roy was at school in Ghent with Maeterlinck and Van Leberghe, and grew up in the same atmosphere of intellectual ferment. His first collection of published verse just pre-dates Maeterlinck's Serres chaudes. The Theatre du Grand-Guignol in Paris (1897 - 1962) achieved a legendary reputation as the 'Theatre of Horror' a venue displaying such explicit violence and blood-curdling terror that a resident doctor was employed to treat the numerous spectators who fainted each night. Indeed, the phrase 'grand guignol' has entered the language to describe any display of sensational horror.Since the theatre closed its doors forty years ago, the genre has been overlooked by critics and theatre historians. This book reconsiders the importance and influence of the Grand-Guignol within its social, cultural and historical contexts, and is the first attempt at a major evaluation of the genre as performance. Its focus is transhumance: the seasonal transfer of grazing animals to different pastures.In the Middle Ages, intensive practical use was made of Dartmoor's resources. Charles Urban was a renowned figure in his time, and he has remained a name in film history chiefly for his development of Kinemacolor, the world's first successful natural colour moving picture system. He was also a pioneer in the filming of war, science, travel, actuality and news, a fervent advocate of the value of film as an educative force, and a controversial but important innovator of film propaganda in wartime.The book uses Urban's story as a means of showing how the non-fiction film developed in the period 1897-1925, and the dilemmas that it faced within a cinema culture in which the entertainment fiction film was dominant.
