This story came from a piece of wood. I was hiking in the mountains on a trail that led around a swamp. Beside the trail was a piece of wood, gnawed on each end by beavers. It looked like a small football to me. I picked it up and took it to my classroom. When my students asked what it was, I told them that it was a Beaver Ball. Thus, Beaver Ball was born. I would like to acknowledge all of my students from that time, and hence, for their imagination.

  • - Introducing "Macho Poetry"
    af Louis Brown
    118,95 kr.

I call this "macho poetry" because pure poetry just doesn't describe how I write. Now the love poetry that I write is where I indulge my romantic side but I still choose to be simple and readable. When I graduated Georgia State University I chose to go straight into the U.S. Paratrooper Department and later I moved to the Ranger Department. Then I attended college later in my life and people were a little surprised when they found I had a bent toward poetry. However, I have been writing all my life whether songs, poetry or stories. I write down to earth poetry 97% of the time. I don't like my readers to have to try and figure out what I am saying. So I just call it "macho poetry", straight words from a man. I hope you like it.

  • - Humorous and Inspiring Devotionals from the World of Sports
    af Steve Davis

In 1992, Gatorade ran a series of ads about the legendary basketball player and icon, Michael Jordan. The series was called Be like Mike. I tried. I went to the backyard with my basketball and tried the alley oop but there was more alley than oop. I tried his 360° wind-mill dunk, but did more like a 10° lay-up. I tried his long-range threes and came up with short-range twos. As hard as I tried, I couldn t be like Mike. Which brings me to my older brother, Mike. He introduced me to sports, which he loved dearly. Because of his recent death, I am dedicating the book to his memory. And I am also going to try to be like Mike in the way that he nurtured his friendships. People are lucky if they have one or two really good friends. Mike had several. Some had been friends for fifty years. One of his friends said at his funeral, Mike was the most loyal friend I ever had. I m going to nurture my friendships in memory of my brother. All of these stories in this book have appeared in my church s newsletter over the years and as such, are a reflection of what was happening in my life at a particular point in time. They also reflect the sports that either I or our son, Tyler, (please forgive the constant references to him, my wife, Sheri and our little girl, Natalie) have played or loved. With that in mind, if you love tennis or gymnastics, then accept my apologies. Those sports, and some others, are not in the book. I trust that this book will be helpful to moms and dads, coaches and to the many kids and adults, like me, who love to play the game.

  • - A Collection of Humorous and Inspiring Stories
    af Steve Davis
    153,95 kr.

When Steve Davis became pastor of the First Baptist Church in Carrollton, Georgia in 1995, one of the first things he learned was the expectation that he was to write a weekly newsletter column. They were to be about 300 words and could be on any topic he chose. Some pastors make these columns into promo pieces about upcoming church events. But Steve decided that this would be a good opportunity to bring a smile to the faces of parishioners and bring a touch of inspiration as well. Steve had never done much writing but nonetheless undertook the weekly assignment with enthusiasm. He began to get much positive feedback, which only inspired him more. Over the years, his articles have covered topics such as Christian living, Church, Sports, Holidays, and Family. Many people in the church had encouraged him to put his articles in a book. Well, after about ten years of articles and some prodding from others, he did just that. He chose to focus, in the first book, on articles dealing with the subjects of Church and Christian Living. When searching for a book title, he came across one of his articles with the title, Steeple People, and he quickly settled on that. You will find these articles easy to read, humorous and inspiring. They will make excellent stories for preachers and teachers who need to illustrate a particular point.

  • - A West Georgia Town of Carroll County
    af Ruth Roberts Holder
    228,95 kr.

This book presents the rich and colorful history of a town that developed in the late 1800's--frontier days forever changed with the coming of the railroad and the crowning of King Cotton. It was a time when early settlers battled the elements, Buckhorn Tavern was a busy stagecoach stop, and the perennial clash of good and evil was witnessed in a shoot-out between the notorious horse-thieving Pony Club and their nemesis, a vigilante group called The Slicks. In time, perseverance triumphed over adversity, and honest commerce created a bustling market place. Despite its small size, the town proved quite progressive, with many innovations and personal accomplishments among its citizens; in fact, the town boasts many "firsts" and "famous." Though faced with many challenges through the years, Temple persists and continues to earn its place in history.

  • - The summer of 1923 when Shoeless Joe Jackson played baseball in Americus, Georgia
    af John Bell
    128,95 kr.

In the summer of 1923, Shoeless Joe Jackson, who was banned from organized baseball in 1921 for his alleged participation in the 1919 Chicago Black Sox World Series scandal, was signed on to play baseball for the Americus, Georgia semi-pro team of the independent South Georgia league. With the Americus club struggling, Joe Jackson came on board and turned things around not only for the team but the entire league. There was controversy with his playing at first, but it soon settled and made way for an astounding run of our national pastime. Shoeless Joe's time in Americus was capped off by leading the team to the league championship at the end of the season.Shoeless Summer, written by Americus native John Bell, tells the fascinating story of Shoeless Joe Jackson's days playing baseball in Americus in 1923. This book features a day-to-day chronology of the season with emphasis on the uproar that followed Americus signing the famed baseball outlaw to play for the team. Statistics and biographies of each of the Americus players, daily lineups and box scores, and the only photograph of Shoeless Joe with the Americus team in uniform known to exist make this a well-rounded piece of baseball history. The cities of Albany, Americus, Arlington, Bainbridge, Blakely, and Dawson each had teams in the South Georgia league. Shoeless Summer includes a complete list of players from each team as well as those who played in the major leagues. Baseball fans young and old will enjoy this factual account of one magical summer in a rural, baseball-crazed region on the country."...He came to Americus, Georgia in 1923 and helped a struggling, hometown baseball team get back on its feet and win the league title from its chief sports rival. None of the fans really cared what he was accused of or what he did or didn't do. All they knew was that he was the greatest ball player they had ever seen, and for a short time, they could call him their own. When Shoeless Joe Jackson left Americus, he left memories of a hero to a small baseball town -- memories of a Shoeless Summer."

Flight of the Armada combines science fantasy, romance, action/adventure and sly humor to create a multi-generation epic. The survivors of the war-devastated world of Thuringa send six scouts to Earth in 1961 in search of a resting place between the fleet and their destination world Farcourt. Earth is inside the area called "The Unknown Territory" by the Stellar Council Worlds, a confederacy to which Thuringa once belonged. As their first Earthian contact, Michael Sheldon tries to reconcile the needs of the newcomers with the reality of advanced beings living in rural Oklahoma. Crown Prince Stuart Phillipi is responsible for his scouting party and tasked with establishing an outpost and make contacts. Caution prevents them from publicly revealing their origins. His impetuous twin brother Prince Darien must learn humility when he works alongside Earthians, without his royal title to shield him as would be usual. Their sister Princess Carrol is the scouting party's medical officer, caught up in a romance with their common born mechanic Gareth Duncan. Gareth is an extraordinary commoner, and his genius is needed in every aspect of the scouting mission to the point of exhaustion. Instead of his usual role as royal guard, Glendon Garin is tasked with learning about Earthians firsthand, a daunting job for such a proper nobleman steeped in years of royal duty and protocol. Aquatic Lord Brent Ardenne must hide his gills and webbed fingers from Earthians, but he revels in a world teeming with oceans, sea creatures - and lots of tasty potables! The Thuringi have lemon-yellow eyes and stand over six feet tall, which makes it hard for them to assimilate easily with their neighbors in Oklahoma, America. Through their Universal Translators, Thuringi voices sound like patrician Englishmen, appropriate for these very foreign visitors. With Michael unable to be on hand at all times, it is largely up to the Thuringi to learn about American/Earth culture. Flight of the Armada is the first of a twenty-six book series exploring the Thuringi culture and other members of the Stellar Council. Book Zero, Fields of Fire, is the prequel chronicling the period during and after the escape from Thuringa leading up to the events of Flight. When tragedy looms later in the series, the peripatetic Thuringi must do everything in their power to survive and reach Farcourt for the future of their race.

  • af Chuck Wanager
    128,95 kr.

In Taking our love offline, Chuck Wanager wields a scalpel to slice and dice and a sledgehammer to bludgeon a poem into shape with equal skill. His writing is sharp, incisive, thoughtful, twisting and twisted. Chuck pays attention to details to create poetry that provokes readers to deep thought and feeling. The poems surprise and challenge readers; they are absorbing, and, yes, sometimes skewed because Chuck often sees the world from the other side of the looking glass. --Dr. Eleanor Wolfe Hoomes, Author of DRIVING WITH MY BLINKER ON Chuck Wanager's poetry collection Taking our love offline will make the reader see the world in a new way. His poetry is edgy and sometimes shocking in its approach to its subject matter. From poems about personal experiences to poems about world events, Chuck grabs the reader's attention. His vivid images and use of the vernacular provide a vision and sometimes a re-vision of contemporary issues. Like the Beat Poets of the 50's, Chuck Wanager relies on concrete language and images to make the reader take note of the world made fresh. --Dr. Robert C. Covel, Author of STRING THEORY and WIND SONG

In this day-by-day account of a long winter visit to Montana, Snipes uncovers signs of innocence and contradiction in human nature: our need for place, our need for company, and our delight in discovery. At times funny, cynical, and even philosophical, each story brings the character and culture of contemporary northwestern Montana to life by populating the landscape with the people, their lives and stories, the beauty of winter life, and the connection to the land and history in this stronghold of Americana. This book is part travel memoir, part meditation journal, and all filled with humor, melancholy, and joy.

BANG! BOOM! THUD are just a few of the best words in the English language. Every time you hear a sound like CACKLE, BOW-WOW, or HONK-HONK you are hearing an onomatopoeia. Conversely, every time you write a word that is spelled as it sounds such as BUZZ, SMACK, or SPLAT you are writing an Onomatopoeia. Ono-mato-whata? is a book about a day in the life of all the onomatopoeias in Bobby's world.
