The way to the heart is through the stomach - and perhaps this also applies to intercultural understanding. Most of Julia Goodman's ancestors were Eastern European Jews who emigrated to the USA at the beginning of the 20th century. Gabriele Edlbauer on the other hand grew up on an organic farm in the predominantly Catholic Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. While gnawing on chicken bones together, the two women came to chat about the significance of certain foods in relation to their own identity. After all, chickens feature in Julia's most important life memories. Since her family always had a chicken recipe at hand for every holiday, including the weekly Shabbat, it was no surprise that the bird eventually became Julia's favorite dish. Gabi's most prominent childhood memories of chickens are less culinary: the hens on the family farm mainly served an economic purpose.Through sharing their stories, they both soon realized that their connections with chicken and their respective artistic approaches were entangled in strange ways. In the process of cooking together, they developed a fascination with the idea of how certain dishes can convey or trigger very specific feelings. The result is a humorous, artistic attempt to expose complex feelings and hard truths in chicken recipes. This book is filled with emotional recipes - accompanied by creative serving suggestions - and invites you to express yourself through chicken.

Marco Stanke (*1987) wurde 60 Jahre nach Alf Lechner (1925-2017) geboren. Trotzdem weisen ihre künstlerischen Positionen vielschichtige Bezüge auf. In Stankes Malereien ist die Leinwand nicht bloß ein Bildträger. Seine Arbeiten sind vielmehr räumliche Gebilde aus Nessel, Keilrahmen und Farbe. Stanke faltet, schneidet, biegt, stapelt und durchbohrt die Leinwände und erprobt die körperlichen Grenzen des Bildes, das er in den Raum ausdehnt. Seine Werke sind teils Bild, teils Relief oder Skulptur, und erst im Zusammenspiel dieser unterschiedlichen "Teile", wie Stanke selbst sie nennt, ergibt sich am Ende das vollständige Bild.Hierin besteht die vordergründigste Verbindung zu Lechner, dessen Skulpturen ebenfalls als Fragmente eines kontinuierlichen Arbeitsprozesses betrachtet werden müssen. Zentral hierfür ist seine Praxis der Teilung, in deren Folge räumliche Beziehungen zwischen den Fragmenten und den Betrachter*innen erforscht und materialbezogene Herstellungsprozesse offengelegt werden können, ganz im Sinne seiner Maxime: "Durch Teilen ist es möglich, mehr über das Ganze zu erfahren."Dieser Ansatz klingt im Titel der Kataloges teil's teil's wider, der als Aufforderung zu verstehen ist, tiefer in Materien einzutauchen. Darüber hinaus suggeriert der Titel auch, dass etwas nicht klar zuordbar ist und verweist so auf die Zusammenstellung von Stankes und Lechners Arbeiten und die gemischte Natur des Ausstellungskonzepts.

Die Publikation präsentiert Skulpturen, Videos, Leinwände und Teppiche von Halil Altindere und erscheint anlässlich seiner Einzelausstellung in der Pilot Galerie in Istanbul (23.11.2023 - 20.01.2024).Halil Altindere (*1971 in Mardin/Türkei, lebt und arbeitet in Istanbul) setzt sich in seinen Arbeiten häufig mit konkreten politischen Inhalten auseinander, auch mit Bezug auf seine kurdischen Wurzeln und der Multikulturalität in der türkischen Gesellschaft. In seinen Werken beschäftigt er sich mit einer Vielzahl an Fragestellungen und beleuchtet Methoden des Widerstands gegen Macht und Unterdrückung, wobei er sich mit Themen wie Subkulturen, Geschlechterrollen, Popkultur oder der Struktur und Macht von Kunst- und Finanzsystemen beschäftigt.Die Publikation versammelt Arbeiten der letzten drei Jahre, in denen zunehmend die Grenzen zwischen Kunst und Leben Altinderes verschwimmen. Die Folgen der Pandemie, die die Welt erschütterte, finden ebenso Widerhall in seinen Werken wie die neue Vater-Rolle des Künstlers. Darüber hinaus macht Altindere zunehmend von den Möglichkeiten künstlicher Intelligenz Gebrauch und setzt KI-Technologie als eine Art persönlichen Assistenten ein, der eine aktive Rolle im Produktionsprozess seiner Werke einnimmt.

In einer Malerei, die sich zweifelsfrei als solche zu erkennen gibt, erfindet Sen Chung seit vielen Jahren immer wieder neue Konstellationen von Zeichen, die von großer Ökonomie gekennzeichnet sind. Es ist eine Malerei der Linie, des Pinselstrichs, auch der Farbtropfen, bei der Materie mit Materie sichtbar in Berührung kommt. Der permanente Wechsel zwischen fernöstlichen und europäischen Prägungen spielt dabei selbstredend eine lebenslang bestimmende Rolle.Der Künstler selbst hat seine Malerei einmal als ,gemalte Philosophie' bezeichnet. Sehen, Wahrnehmen, Fühlen, Verinnerlichen: das ist der adäquate Modus im Umgang mit den Arbeiten von Sen Chung, und wer ihn beherzigt, spürt eine beglückende Freiheit jenseits von Sachzwängen, düsteren Prognosen und einem katastrophalen Weltlauf.

Das Buch, das zugleich als Dokumentation der gleichnamigen Ausstellungspräsentation im Haus Mödrath dient, präsentiert frühe Arbeiten aus der Privatsammlung Wilhelm Otto Nachf. Seit Beginn seines Künstlerlebens hat Jürgen Köhler (* 1954) sich ganz auf das Zeichnen fokussiert. In seinen figurativen, situativen und gegenstandsfreien Bilderfindungen greift der Künstler regelmäßig auf einschlägige Motive der Kunstgeschichte und ihre ikonographischen Rahmenthemen zurück, um auf diese Weise sein Verhältnis zu Zeit und Welt zu illustrieren.Seine Zeichnungen ähneln in ihrem Fantasiereichtum häufig den Arbeiten von Kindern oder sogenannten Outsidern, auch wenn sie inhaltlich von Mythen, Religiosität, Erotik und Sexualität geprägt sind. Sie zeigen Zeichen, Figuren, eisige Natur und technoide Geometrien, beschwören unsere verborgenen und verschütteten Erinnerungen und Gedanken und eröffnen erratische Räume, gefüllt mit Metaphern und Allegorien.Seine Figuren kommen nicht ausschließlich aus dem europäischen Bildverständnis, sie kennen das faszinierende Fremde japanischer Holzschnitte, die Maskeraden geheimnisvoller Rituale oder Szenen aus dem uns unbegreiflichen No-Theater. US artist Heather Sheehan, who has lived in Cologne since the mid-1990s, combines elements of performance, textile sculpture, installation and video art, analog black and white photography, poetry and narrative in her work to explore and present individual mythology.For her project Sylta, the whaler's widow who cries (2020-2024), the artist combined a sequence of 40 black and white self-portraits, a short story and the costume she sewed herself into a visual and verbal narrative. Isolated with an analog camera and typewriter in a thatched house on the coast of an island in the Wadden Sea of the North Sea, Sheehan felt herself transported into the role of a pregnant widow of a whaling captain. In the short story Ich bin Sylta, she reveals the startling synchronicity of experiencing fiction during the creative process.

The book documents the German climate movement in an era in which the global climate crisis is an ever-present topic. It tells the story of people who put their ideals first and cross moral and legal boundaries to campaign for more climate protection.For this project, photographer Tenzin Heatherbell delved deep into the world of climate activists: he participated in events, attended court hearings, met the activists in private during their preparations and after their actions. With his camera, Heatherbell was there every step of the way, becoming part of the inner circle while remaining a detached observer. He witnessed how more than 3,000 police officers removed climate protesters from Lützerath who had been occupying the village to prevent the expansion of the nearby open-cast mine. The photographer captured over forty of the Last Generation's highly controversial actions staged at museums, on highways, bridges, and airports.Supplemented by personal impressions and essays, Heatherbell has created a photographic portrait that provides insights into a world that is inaccessible to many people. His intimate look behind the scenes of the climate movement allows us to see other images than those supplied by the mass media. He explores the activists' motives and their rage at what they regard as the inertia of politics and society.

The Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City, a pyramid-shaped structure of volcanic stone, was intended to be the final mansion of Diego Rivera and his wife, Frida Kahlo. Today, it houses Rivera's vast collection of pre-Columbian art. Unlike typical museums, the building's galleries resemble religious or ceremonial chambers, and the corridors are dramatic and cavernous.In 2022, artist Robert Janitz (b. 1962 in Alsfeld, Germany), who had recently moved to Mexico City from New York, was invited to exhibit his work at Anahuacalli. This catalog documents this extraordinary dialogue between pre-Hispanic and contemporary aesthetics. As an outsider, Janitz was free to respond to what he found compelling at Anahuacalli: the colors, the textures, the visionary architecture. Throughout the museum's three floors, Janitz installed large-scale paintings on the walls, even the ceiling and floor, to amplify and distort Rivera's almost ubiquitous decorative program. His paintings of tubular structures, halfway between hieroglyphs and shapes, were spotlit against the heavy, dark stone walls, giving them a jewel-like luminosity and creating an almost metaphysical and spiritual experience. Conceptually and chromatically, Anahuacalli seemed the perfect home for Janitz's extravagantly colored silhouettes.

When the group Rrose Irwin Sélavy was founded in Yugoslavia in 1983, its members DuSan Mandic (1954, Ljubljana), Miran Mohar (1958, Novo Mesto), Andrej Savski (1961, Ljubljana), Roman Uranjek (1961, Trbovlje, +2022, Ljubljana) and Borut Vogelnik (*1959, Kranj) were aged between 22 and 29. They all came from the punk and graffiti scene of Ljubljana. Together with the music group Laibach, the theater of the sisters Scipio Nasicas, and the designers from Neuer Kollektivismus (New Collectivism), IRWIN is still one of the main groups of the artists' collective Neue Slowenische Kunst (New Slovenian Art), founded in 1984.This volume is published to mark the 40th anniversary of the artists' collective and to accompany the exhibition at HMKV Dortmund. Since 1983, IRWIN has been investigating the art history of Eastern Europe, especially the ambivalent legacy of the historical avant-garde and its totalitarian successors, i.e. the dialectic of avant-garde and totalitarianism. Since the 1990s, the focus of the group has been on challenging the art history of "Western Modernism" in a critical and iconoclastic way. The artists playfully and darkly contrast it with the "retro avant-garde" and an "Eastern Modernism".The book, which can be read from both sides, is made up of two parts: the first chapter explores the black humor that is a consistent element in IRWIN's work. The second chapter examines issues relating to the state - and how IRWIN uses them to comment on current topics such as migration.

Wer baut, was, für wen und wo? Beeinflusst durch die Architekturgeschichte erkundet MaruSa Sagadin (*1978) die einem Gebäude oder Ort zugrunde liegenden sozialen Aspekte. Ihre künstlerische Arbeit bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle von privatem und öffentlichem Raum und vereint Elemente aus Architektur, Skulptur und Malerei. Sagadin nutzt Humor und Übertreibung in ihrer Formensprache und in der Verwendung von Farben, um Ein- und Ausschlussmechanismen aufzudecken und mit etablierten Codes der Kunstbetrachtung zu brechen. Spielerisch-subversiv verweisen ihre Arbeiten auf Elemente der Pop- und Subkultur und der angewandten Kunst. Im Zusammenspiel von Gender, Sprache und Skulptur unterwandern sie bestehende Normen und thematisieren Bildhauerei als eine Form des Sichtbarmachens. Anlässlich des Ehrengastauftritts Sloweniens auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2023 realisierte die Künstlerin in der Rotunde der SCHIRN neue Arbeiten, die auf die spezifische Beschaffenheit des halböffentlichen Raumes eingehen.Der Katalog erscheint begleitend zur Ausstellung in der SCHIRN und stellt Sagadins Installation ausführlich vor (21.09.2023 bis 14.01.2024).

It is hard to define what an art scene actually is. With a sense of irony and plenty of self-confidence, Gregor Guski (*1981 in Olsztyn, Poland) has titled his book "Die Szene" (The Scene), as if there were only one. He is in fact referring to the Düsseldorf art scene, or more precisely, to those artists whose works are currently setting trends and whose personalities have a decisive influence on events in the city. Aside from the big names, graduates of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, and up-and-coming newcomers, Guski presents the Düsseldorf fringe scene in all its variety. His photographs are not documentary, but radically experimental.In close communication with the artists, Guski's photo shoots take place in the protagonists' studios or in environments that shape their art. The photographs become works of art in their own right - flamboyantly decorated theatrical stages in which the sitters are the performers."Die Szene" is an attempt to portray the current artists and trends of the Düsseldorf art scene. Almost 100 artists from all artistic genres are presented.

Die vorliegende Publikation begleitet die erste Einzelausstellung der international renommierten Künstlerin Mercedes Azpilicueta (*1981 in La Plata, Argentinien) in Deutschland. Das Werk der in Amsterdam lebenden Künstlerin umfasst Performance, Skulptur, Zeichnung, Textilarbeiten, Videokunst und Installation. Darin kommen queere, feministische oder marginalisierte Figuren zu Wort. Ihre Arbeiten sind inspiriert von spekulativer und fiktionaler lateinamerikanischer Literatur, (neo)barocker Kunstgeschichte, Dekolonialismus, zeitgenössischer Populärkultur und verschiedenen Aspekten der Handwerkstechnik und der Textilproduktion.Mercedes Azpilicuetas jüngste künstlerische Forschung konzentriert sich auf die Erkundung der Identitäten von Figuren aus der Vergangenheit, die sich außerhalb des Gewöhnlichen bewegten. Anhand von Bildern Artemisia Gentileschis, einer Nacherzählung der obskuren Geschichte vom ¿Nonnen-Leutnant¿, welche*r im 17. Jahrhundert lebte, barocken Kleidungsstücken wie beispielsweise der Schamkapsel sowie neobarocken Gespenstern rekonstruiert Azpilicueta die Vergangenheit, indem sie deren Anachronismus wiederherstellt und Geschichten mit Imagination und Erinnerung belebt. In ihren Arbeiten verbindet sie auf diese Weise barocke Stilelemente mit dem schillernden, queeren Nachtleben, der Bondage-Kultur und anderen Aspekten, die sich mit der Geschlechtsidentität und den dem Körper auferlegten Zwängen befassen.

With his first photographic album, Christian Heymann embarks on an emotional and personal journey. In dark, melancholic and beautiful shots, the photographer processes the failed relationship with his girlfriend.Faced with the desire for an open relationship, Heymann found himself in a calamitous situation, which was quickly characterized by envy and jealousy and subsequently developed a disturbing dynamic. The waning love, the appearance of other partners, and the constant struggle for affirmation left Heymann feeling numb. His book shows the complicated process of mutual alienation and is simultaneously an attempt both to come to terms with what he and his girlfriend experienced and to find each other in a new way.Photographs marked by vulnerability and emotional froideur mix with sensitive still lifes and threatening landscape scenes to create a poignantly atmospheric narrative that reveals a deep and intimate view into the state of mind of those portrayed.

In den Arbeiten von Yoana Tuzharova treffen Raum und Zeit in besonderer Weise zusammen. Die Künstlerin kreiert komplexe Installationen, mit denen sie auf den jeweiligen Ausstellungsort reagiert, außerdem mobile Objekte, mit denen sie in ausgewählten Kontexten punktuell interveniert. Ihre Werke sind multimediale Gesamtkunstwerke, die dynamisch und verwirrend mit dem Alltäglichen verwoben sind.Tuzharovas Kunst überführt globale Prozesse der Gegenwart in zwei- und dreidimensionale Strukturen und Objekte. Hierfür nutzt sie statistische Daten und Grafiken der Weltbank, der UNO oder der UNESCO zu sozialen, ökonomischen und ökologischen Entwicklungen, um abstrakt anmutende Ornamente zu entwerfen. Dabei kombiniert sie digitale Herstellungsverfahren mit elektronischen Medien und traditionellen Materialien wie Holz, Keramik, Papier, Klang oder Licht und schafft so neue Schnittstellen zwischen der virtuellen und der realen Wirklichkeit, zwischen Gegenwart und Geschichte, Individuum und Gesellschaft.Der Katalog erscheint im Rahmen des GWK-Förderpreises 2022 sowie anlässlich der Ausstellung im Gustav-Lübcke-Museum in Hamm (13.11.2022 bis 12.02.2023).

Angela Hiß ist in verschiedenen Medien tätig, wobei ihr Weg sie chronologisch von der Zeichnung und Malerei zur Bildhauerkunst geführt hat. Das Material, das Hiß für ihre Arbeiten wählt, ist stets Holz, das von ihr mit Band-, Ketten- und Stichsäge sowie mit Schleifmaschine und Schleifpapier bearbeitet wird.Für den Betrachter liegt der Reiz oft im Geheimnisvollen ihrer Werke. Das wird durch die Verbindung von rätselhaftem Bild und nicht minder rätselhaftem Titel noch potenziert, der oft poetische oder lyrische Bezüge aufweist.Das Buch präsentiert Skulpturen und Zeichnungen der letzten fünfzehn Jahre und liefert so einen umfassenden Einblick in das Schaffen der Künstlerin.

Sonja Trabandt's project BEFANGEN deals with the personal desire of breaking free from social norms, cultural or social barriers or even evolutionary processes. Strong colors meet surrealistic abstracted metaphors of vague human feelings. There is no stringent storyline, no continuous series. The book's layout shows a flow of subsequent and interwoven images. They create bright disharmonies with neither a question nor an answer. With her intuitive imagery Trabandt invites the viewer into her slightly melancholic wonderland, depicting her very personal idea of freedom.

A key theme pervading the work of Alex Müller (*1969) is her investigation of the complex phenomenon of time. Again and again, the artist finds impressive images representing time - both its progress as well as its relative nature. For Kunsthalle Nürnberg, Alex Müller has developed an exhibition that combines biographical allusions, cultural and art historical references. In eight chapters, the exhibition takes us on a journey through the artist's universe.Numerous everyday objects become charged with a specific meaning in Alex Müller's oeuvre. Any material can become an artistic material in her work. The artist underlines the open narratives of her art by cleverly playing with the boundaries of painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, film, sound, and performance.Stories are hinted at, but never fully told. The titles evoke associations with specific people, books, films, or events. Alex Müller's art always suggests something unspoken, encouraging further thought, and represents the perpetual search for the self as well as a varied exploration of transience.

Livin' in the Hood berichtet von den persönlichen New-York-Erlebnissen der beiden Fotografen Jürgen Bürgin und Jörg Rubbert und nimmt den Leser mit auf eine visuelle Zeitreise zurück in die Jahre 1990 und 2013/14. Der Bildband dokumentiert prägende Ereignisse und berichtet von inspirierenden Begegnungen aus einer Stadt, die sich in dieser Zeitspanne grundlegend verändert hat. Dabei zeigt das Buch nicht nur Bilder der beiden Straßenfotografen, sondern teilt persönliche Anekdoten und Geschichten sowie weitere Texte und Informationen.Insgesamt bietet es einen tiefen Einblick in die Lebenswirklichkeit im New York der Jahre 1990 und 2013/14. Es vermittelt dem Leser einen Eindruck davon, wie sich New York in jenen Jahren "anfühlte", und zieht Vergleiche zu den gesellschaftlichen und politischen Veränderungen jener Zeit.

Nasan Tur (*1974) explores the political and social conditions of our time. His works are experiments that bring to light ideologies, social norms, and behavioral codes and open up new possibilities for individual action. To this end, the artist examines statements, gestures, and images that he finds in the media and in the public sphere. Tur transforms them into miniatures of current social crises and discourses. The question of how predetermined role models influence us is at the heart of his art: he investigates what drives us to cross boundaries when faced with oppression, powerlessness, and manipulation and to actively change the social order.The catalog is published to accompany the exhibition at Berlinische Galerie and presents new works addressing questions of power and its legitimacy. Why do human beings kill each other? What is the nature of the violence that we witness in ourselves and how and under what circumstances is it triggered? By arranging his works in a specific way, Tur creates images that express an ambivalent attitude towards death and life. The artist confronts us with our inner demons, asks hunters about the act of killing, and carefully arranges lifeless animals in the exhibition space.

Since 1997, the Mart Stam Society - the non-profit association supporting the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin - has awarded the Mart Stam Prize every year. The winners are chosen by an independent jury for the best final projects at the academy of art. Thus, the society provides assistance to young artists and designers during their studies and helps them start their professional careers.The publication features texts and images presenting all the 2022 award winners in detail. Their works reflect the issues that are currently moving the generation of 20- to 30-year-olds. By investigating the pressing problems of our time and current discourses, they develop the themes of their art. Their own mental state is examined and artistically processed. Die vorliegende Publikation, die begleitend zur gleichnamigen, multimedialen Ausstellung im HMKV Dortmund erscheint, vollzieht einen radikalen Perspektivwechsel: Sie betrachtet die Welt aus der Sicht nicht-menschlicher Organismen, denen wir üblicherweise kein Bewusstsein zusprechen. Diesen Wesen und Dingen geben Kerima Stolzer und Lex Rütten eine Stimme: Sie artikulieren sich durch die sieben fiktionalen Charaktere Micro, Xtract, Pionea, Azolla, Symbiotechnica, Extinct und Hydra. Mit ihrer Hilfe spekulieren die Künstler:innen über vergangene, gegenwärtige und kommende Symbiosen zwischen Mikroorganismen, Pflanzen, Tieren, Bakterien, Pilzen und technischen Objekten. Es geht um neuartige Kreisläufe und Allianzen in der Natur - im Zeitalter des Anthropozäns und weit darüber hinaus.Die fiktiven Wesen, die den Besucher:innen in bunten, comichaften Video-, VR- und Soundinstallationen begegnen, wecken ob ihrer Winzigkeit und ihres kindlichen Gesangs auf subtile Weise die Beschützerinstinkte und Empathie der Betrachtenden. Die Publikation enthält neben einer Fotodokumentation der Ausstellung einen neuen Essay von Salome Rodeck sowie kurze enzyklopädische Texte bzw. Textauszüge zu den sieben Charakteren.

Mit Blick auf die aktuellen Entwicklungen der ungarischen Politik präsentiert die Publikation, die begleitend zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung im Emil Schumacher Museum in Hagen erscheint, zwei Künstler, die sich mit der ungarischen Gesellschaft aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven kritisch beschäftigen. Csaba Nemes (*1966) widmet sich Themen wie der Flüchtlingskrise, dem Rassismus gegenüber der Roma-Gemeinschaft und der Erinnerung an die kommunistische Vergangenheit Ungarns. In seinen Bildern finden sich Außenräume wie Landschaften, Häuser und öffentliche Orte. Dia Zékány (*1987) dokumentiert überfüllte, chaotische Innenräume ¿ repräsentativ für die Realität kleinbürgerlicher Familien.In der Gegenüberstellung geben die zwei zeitgenössischen Positionen exemplarisch und schlaglichtartig Einblick in ein Land, dessen komplexe Geschichte und Gegenwart. Die Publikation wirft somit einen Blick von außen auf Bilder, die sich aus der Innensicht des Landes erklären.

Julia Schewalie (*1988) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 2009 to 2015.Coming from landscape painting, Julia Schewalie turned to a serial production process, in which she works with many different elements from different materials but through an additive technique produces a uniformity that has its own particular formal language, whereby viewers discover the differences between the individual works. As diverse as her materials are, they operate according to the same mechanism; they interact in persistently new ways with the light that falls on them, and thus their presence in a given space changes. A change in perspective sometimes changes everything. This is a mesmerizing aspect of the works of Julia Schewalie, which have an inherently ephemeral and fleeting quality often juxta- posed with a perplexingly unusual use of materials.The monochrome works generate contemplative situations, and tempt viewers with their haptically compelling surfaces while eluding anyone's immediate grasp. Beyond Black is the first comprehensive monograph on the artist's work to be published here by Verlag Kettler.

At the beginning of the 1950s, the city of Giessen built emergency accommodation in an area known as "Auf dem Eulenkopf" for people without fixed abode. Socially underprivileged families were thus separated from the city's middle-class society. Living conditions were accordingly difficult, and social problems and violence soon followed.In the 1970s, students began to address the problems and tried to create a decent neighborhood together with the residents. They found a prominent advocate in Horst-Eberhard Richter, the director of the local psychosomatic clinic. In 2020, fifty years after the foundation of the initiative, Richter's granddaughter Merle Forchmann embarked on a photographic exploration of today's Eulenkopf housing estate.Over a period of two years, Forchmann repeatedly traveled to Giessen. She established contact with the social workers, got to know the residents, talked to the people, and started to photograph everyday life in the estate from within. With authentic, powerful images and intense recordings of conversations, she has created an impressive portrait of the neighborhood and its residents.
