The collapse of Socialism has had a profound effect on the society and politics in the countries that emerged after the break up of the Soviet Union. These countries had to learn everything from scratch. The collapse of socialism started teaching the new breed of politicians not only the fundamentals of real democracy but also the negative factors associated with democracy found in a typical developing country. The effects of the collapse of socialism in the Soviet Union touched all sections of society, especially Russian women. Education and other social services lost their importance in an economy that was now in shambles. Although a number of Western scholars have written volumes on the collapse of socialism in the Soviet Union this book is the first attempt by an Indian scholar (Vasundhara Mohan, Associate Professor, Centre for Central Eurasian Studies, University of Mumbai, India) to look at the effects with specific reference to the Democratisation of Soviet Polity, the status of women and the impact on the other social aspects of Russian Society. Written in a lucid style, this work is based on the author's research and personal knowledge acquired during her visit to Russia. Vasundhara Mohan obtained her Ph.D, in Political Science from the South Asia Studies Centre of the Rajasthan University at Jaipur in India for her work on the Muslim minorities of Sri Lanka. Her work on the status of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka has been published 'Muslims of Sri Lanka, Aalekh, Jaipur: 1985' as well as her doctoral dissertation 'Identity Crisis of the Muslims of Sri Lanka; Mittal, Delhi: 1987'. She later joined the Centre for Soviet Studies of the Bombay University in India. Continuing her post-Doctoral research, she worked on the nationalities problems in the Soviet Union, US-Soviet Relations and other contemporary issues. An alumni of the Salzburg Seminar, she continues to teach and guide research at the Centre (now renamed Centre for Central Eurasian Studies). Her publications include Soviet Foreign Policy in South Asia: A Case Study of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh; Soviet Union Under Gorbachev; and Evaluation of the Gorbachev Era. This work is the result of her research carried out under field trip from the Indian Council of Social Science Research. Vasundhara Mohan lives in Mumbai (Bombay), India.

  • - Existing Causes and Possible Results of the Coming Post-economic Revolution
    af Vladislav Inozemtsev
    552,95 kr.

The Human Race will enter the third millennium on the crest of a far-reaching social change. According to the theory of the promising Russian economist and sociologist Vladislav Inozemtsev, a new type of society is taking shape, one in which the motivations of an increasingly wide spectrum of people are essentially non-economic. The emergence of this post-economic society gives rise to major contradictions, both within the developed post-industrial countries and on the international scene. These contradictions are rooted in the different capacity of individuals and whole nations for absorbing the growing flow of information and generating new knowledge - something that underlines today's technological and social progress. At the turn of the century, the researcher sees humanity as a ""divided civilisation"". The prospects for its development are what this book analyses. Vladislav L. Inozemtsev (b. 1968) is a Professor in the Economics Department of Moscow State University and Director of the Centre for Post-Industrial Studies under the Russian Academy of Sciences. Professor Inozemtsev has authored eight books on theoretical aspects of contemporary international economy and economic history published in Russia during 1995-2000, as well as over 140 articles in the Russian academic press. One of his books has been translated into French (V.L. Inozemtsev, Contribution à la théorite de la formation post-économique de la société, Paris, 1996) and another one into English (V.L. Inozemtsev, The Constitution of the Post-Economic State: Post-Industrial Theories and Post-Economic Trends in the Contemporary World, Aldershot, England, 1998). Between 1997-2000, he translated into Russian and edited several books by Western economists and sociologists, including The Calculus of Consent and The Limits of Liberty by James Buchanan, The Coming of Post-Industrial Society by Daniel Bell as well as the anthology Modern Post-Industrial Wave in the West comprising excerpts from the works of Lester Thurow, Peter Drucker, Francis Fukuyama, John K. Galbraith, A. Etzioni, etc. From 1994 Vladislav L. Inozemtsev has been Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Moscow-Paris Commercial Bank. In 1998-1999 he was invited to Harvard University, USA as a visiting lecturer on Russian Economics. Since 1997 Vladislav L. Inozemtsev has been living in Moscow and Paris.

This book provides a unique performance measurement system (KBEMS) built upon the critical success factors for organisational excellence by providing sound methodology based on system modelling and system for performance measurement approach currently in use and then developed new models (KBEM, KBS & KBEMS). The new models are then tested and validated by using empirical data and statistical methods. Various case studies and examples in this book provide application in certain sectors. Most importantly the generic model (KBEMS) developed in this book can easily be adopted in any organisation for any sector which in turn will provide a robust, valid, effective and easy to use performance measurement system to achieve Organisational Excellence. Finally with the help of empirical data a comparison method was suggested using the new KBEM model with EFQM and MBNQA frameworks. • - Agriculture, Trade and Agribusiness
    af Sanjeev Chopra
    582,95 kr.

This book is an attempt to understand changes in the macro policy environment of organisations dealing with agriculture and agribusiness activities in South Asia. The main proposition of this study is that on account of limited opportunities for global agricultural trade in the pre-WTO period, and the 'autarkic' agricultural policy followed by most countries in South Asia. The main emphasis of 'development plans' was on self-sufficiency in agriculture, national food security and adequate availability of food through the Public Distribution System. Strengthening the export competitiveness of agriculture in the regional or global market was not a conscious strategy. However, this paradigm of national protection and self-sufficiency has been completely reversed by the provisions of the WTO, which has opened new opportunities for trade liberalisation. South Asia has to respond to the challenges of the WTO, and in this process, latent business opportunities within the region will come to the fore. This study suggests that agribusiness organisations in the region must anticipate these changes and prepare themselves for the coming years. It points out that while state supported agribusiness organisations will be adversely affected on account of the liberalisation manifesto which most South Asian nations have adopted, other forms of agribusiness organisations, especially co-operatives and private enterprises will get the opportunity to flourish. Sanjeev Chopra (born 1961) studied Literature and History at Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar and Jawahar Lal Nehru University New Delhi. He wrote for Times of India and Economic Times before joining the Indian Adminstrative Service in 1985. He held the Robert S McNmara fellowship of the World Bank (1998-99) and the Hubert H Humphrey Fellowship at University of Cornell(1999-00). He is currently on the faculty of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussorie.

The basic hypothesis of the present volume is that trade liberalisation and MNC's-led globalisation have been mainly responsible for the deterioration of human values, human dignity and human welfare in poor countries. It brings to focus the mechanism through which globalisation has been able to create and sustain poverty, inequality and gender differentiation in the economic sphere. B.N. The Present volume has concentrated on a few critical areas of the Turkish economy including the industrial sector, human dvelopment, liberalization and its impact, trade, macroeconomic fundamentals, and the monetary and fiscal policies. These contemporary issues are indeed very critical indicators of the macroeconomic scenario of the country. While explicating most of the more critical contemporary issues, the volume has also pinpointed the opportunities and challenges in many areas of macroeconomic activities. The issues selected here for analysis are all critical for an open economy like Turkey which is a participant in the process of economic globalization. The book is purported to be a useful compendium for students and researchers of macroeconomics in general and the Turkish economy in particular. B.N. In addition to rationalising and ramifying the use of a customer satisfaction index it outlines various dimensions of customer satisfaction measurements and covers the necessary methodology along with justification and process of developing questionnaires. Finally, this book provides details of the results generated by three different models for customer satisfaction index and their comparisons with different data sets collected from the public and private sectors which incorperate South Yorkshire Police, the Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation and the World Congress for Total Quality Management.Professor Kanji, who is the Director of Kanji Quality Culture Ltd., is also Emeritus Professor of applied statistics at Sheffield Hallam University. The basic desideratum of the present volume is to threadbare the fundamental theories of economics and their evolutionary trajectory in a simplified way devoid of verbosity and rigmarole. The traces of economic theories have been analysed with reference to, inter alia, their methodological foundations and historical genesis. Past and present theories have been categorised under taxonomical schema into major schools to properly appreciate and differentiate their respective contributions. The historicity of some of the important micro and macro theories have depicted in a very precise way so as to keep the subject well within the area of bounded rationality of the average reader. The final part of the study briefly recapitulates the contemporary issues and changes in macro and monetary economics, and also the substantive development in development economics. It is believed that this little volume will enable the readers to have a bird's eye view of the broad panorama of economic theories both past and present. B.N. The present book is a fascinating account of the living ideas of dead economists. As the past is given to interact with the present, the old ideas of great economists remain essentially a living subject in the economic universe of discourse. The book outlines the major contributions and ideas of almost all important economists from all recognised schools, in a precise manner. Many of these ideas are found to be useful for the analysis of various economic problems. B.N. Ghosh, PhD (India), M.CIM (UK), GFCR (Harvard), is currently a Professor of Economics, Eastern Mediterranean University, North Cyprus.
