"Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless." (Ecc. 1:2) People often twist themselves into pretzels trying to make Ecclesiastes fit into the Judeo-Christian ethos-or its most challenging passages are ignored altogether because it doesn't wrap life up into the pretty package promised through the prosperity gospel teachings. Qoheleth, The Teacher / Qoheleth, My Muse uses poetic insights, journaled observations, and lived experiences to translate this curious book in the Bible into the context of now.
Brief & Bleeding Margins is a raw glimpse into a cis-woman's journey. "Brief" in the smatterings of autobiographical prose that act as (very long) titles to the poems that follow. "Bloody" in the sense that the poet allowed herself to be literal-as a woman: she bleeds and her existence holds that truth to be self-evident. These poems dive into opinions on the current political state of mind (BLOODY POLITICS), girlhood to womanhood transformation (EMERGING, BRIEFLY), pain and beauty of motherhood (MOTHER'S BLOOD), and finally healing through the creative process (BRIEF META-POESY). Brief & Bleeding Margins is for the hurt and healing of the world, because truly we are just the marks in the margins-the scratches and swirls we make when trying to make our pens work again. We are works in progress and you will see yourself in this brief and bleeding history of now.
The Letting of a Little Water is a collection of magnetic poetry and polaroids. Each poem was either written to match the polaroid or the polaroid was taken to match the poem. The Letting of a Little Water is a visual example of being in tune with your emotions and being able to see yourself in the world around you.
My AfroRican State of Soul is a blend of narrative nonfiction and poetry that chronicles Lucas Rivera's journey through life. In her foreword, Ruha Benjamin, Princeton University Professor of African American Studies, describes this journey as a model of "intergenerational healing," which she points out "can only emerge from a new poetics."This debut collection of poetry speaks to both budding young creatives and OG hip-hop heads who remember the dawn of an artistic era. As a BIPOC man, Rivera has struggled against traditional conceptions of masculinity toward a path of love, acceptance, vulnerability, and shared healing. His work speaks to everyone who has struggled with imposter syndrome, displacement and disempowerment. As a child, he could speak to his father but would never actually know him. He grew into a man who learned to salvage healing from that loss, building an artistic vision for identidad, struggle, love, and faith that has spread across the United States. Art is a means of survival for him, from turntables to Latin dance to painting to stained glass to writing. These mediums opened his world, and allowed him to experience true love, accept faith and reconciliation, and eventually grace his own father with Aché (blessings) despite the pain of his absence.Inspired by the culturally dynamic tradition of Afro-Puerto Rican poets such as Piri Thomas and Pedro Peitri, Rivera draws upon their unfiltered approach in this decades-spanning body of work, while also drawing from the emerging tradition of contemporary poetry and lyricism. My AfroRican State of Soul is crafted to stand alone, but can form the backbone of a riveting stage performance with a full dance ensemble, drums, bass, keys, and powerful voices.
