The type of cancer that involves an abnormal growth of skin cells is called skin cancer. The signs of melanoma include a large brownish spot with darker speckles, a painful lesion that itches or burns, or as a mole that changes in color and size. A weakened immune system, exposure to radiation, a personal history of skin cancer, fair skin, and excessive sun exposure are some factors that increase the risk of skin cancer.
