We wish to have it borne in mind that war inevitably brings in its train, not scenes of butchery and bloodshed only to soldiers engaged in the service, but degradation to the souls of men, and wasting sorrow to the house, the home, and the fire-side. Let us, then, never be deluded by the false ideas of glory, which are so apt to blind mankind to the real character of war; but, on the contrary, let us ever cultivate sentiments of peace, so long as they are compatible with honor and independence. Unnecessary war is alike a crime against Heaven and humanity! "
