Akhtar Shairani was descended from the Pashtun Sherani tribe, who went to India with Sultan Mahmood Ghaznawi and settled in Tonk, Rajasthan. Like those of Byron, Keats, and Shelley, youth predominates throughout Akhtar's poetry. Shaair-e-Roomaan i.e. "The Poet of Romance" was his alias. Among his best-known poetry volumes are Akhtaristan, Nigarshat-e-Akhtar, Lala-e-toor, Tayyur-e-Aawara, Naghma-e-Haram, Subh-e bahaar, and Shahnaz. He was renowned for establishing literary trends in Urdu, particularly in poetry. Selected short stories by Akhtar Shairani are included in this book "Alif Laila ki aik Raat".
