In an age when deism was taking a strong foothold, Butler argued for the return to an orthodox view of God. He did not agree that God was detached and separated from the world, or that Jesus was more God than man, but rather
that God was personal and Christ was exactly as he is seen in the orthodox doctrine of Protestant Christianity.
