This book investigates the ways and the degree in which bilingualism affects language, cognitive and narrative abilities in bilingual children. The results of the research reveal the significance of biliteracy in the above areas. The book also provides research observations and classroom implications of the finds or the research.
Narrative elicitation is an ecological way to investigate linguistic structures and the processes of their acquisition. Variation in narrative production is motivated by different factors, including the type of task, cross-linguistic differences, learners' literacy and cognitive development and the narrative practices in the society.
This study investigates the oral and written story productions of 10-12-year-old Greek-German and Greek-English bilingual children growing up in Germany and the US. It indicates that bilinguals can share narrative abilities in both modes of production, if educational support is adequate and bilingual language dominance in not too pronounced.
This mixed-methods study investigates the link between accent and identity in an English as a lingua franca setting. A quantitative speech data analysis of eight phonetic features describes the German and French speakers' accents, while a qualitative analysis of introspective interview data exhibits how they differ in terms of identity.
This book explores simultaneous trilingual siblings' code switching behavior focusing on their minority language development combined with a thorough examination of their parent's input. The book argues code switching is an organic building block in a child's multilingual system and provides a picture of its developmental process.
This book investigates inconsistencies in the British and American accents of advanced German learners of English. It takes a variationist approach based on extra- and intra-linguistic factors as potential explanations for variability and contributes to understanding the status of L1 transfer in language learners at "ultimate attainment".
This empirical study investigates accuracy development of the emerging article system in German as a second language, focusing on child second language acquisition in an immersion context. The investigation combines applied, educational and psycholinguistic perspectives and bears implications for quality development in L2 learning and teaching.
This book is a response to changes in modern reality and philosophy of language teaching, offering effective solutions to situations outside of norms and routines. It familiarises readers with contemporary theoretical debate and new research and demonstrates how to easily translate these into practical everyday classroom applications.
