This volume is the first in a new series of editions of Coptic-language "magical" manuscripts from Egypt, written on papyrus, ostraca, parchment, and paper, and dating to between the fourth and twelfth centuries CE. Their texts attest to non-institutional rituals intended to bring about changes in the lives of those who used them - heal disease, curse enemies, bring about love or hatred, or see into the future. These manuscripts represent rich sources of information on daily life and lived religion of Egypt in the last centuries of Roman rule and the first centuries after the Arab conquest, giving us glimpses of the hopes and fears of people of this time, their conflicts and problems, and their vision of the human and superhuman worlds. This volume presents 37 new editions and descriptions of manuscripts, focusing on formularies or "handbooks", those texts containing instructions for the performance of rituals. Each of these is accompanied by a history of its acquisition, a material description, and presented with facing text and translations, tracings of accompanying images, and explanatory notes to aid in understanding the text.
What happens when we close our eyes for the very last time? The ancient Egyptians provide a fascinating answer to human life’s most enigmatic question. Over three millennia the rich river civilisation along the banks of the Nile develops funerary customs which enable the Egyptians to find their way to eternal life, where everyone who lives and dies is reborn. It all begins in the embalming workshop, where the dead are transformed into mummies. Chapter by chapter, the reader is initiated into how ancient Egyptians achieved immortality. A lost culture’s conception of death and its incredible burial customs are unfolded and explained, revealing a fantastic and compelling universe of myths and rituals. At first glance, it all appears alarmingly alien, but gradually it begins to make sense and speak to us across the many millennia. Published in conjunction with Moesgaard Museum’s special exhibition Ancient Egypt – Obsessed with life, this book can also be read as an independent introduction to the Egyptians’ conceptions of the afterlife. With contributions by Tine Bagh, Paul John Frandsen, Ole Herslund, Rune Nyord, Rune Olsen, Maxime Rageot, Sofie Schiødt, Philipp Stockhammer and Jørgen Podemann Sørensen.

Women Forgotten in History unveils the captivating narratives of extraordinary women whose stories have been marginalized and obscured throughout time. As we reflect on history, it becomes apparent that the majority of names we encounter are those of men. But does this imply that women have contributed little or led uneventful lives? Or is it rather an indication that their achievements and stories have been obscured and overshadowed throughout the ages? Within the pages of this enlightening book, a tapestry of forgotten stories comes to life. From ancient Egyptian pharaohs to courageous teenagers who defied Nazi occupation, a diverse tapestry of women emerges from the shadows, these women reclaim their rightful place in history's narrative. Some forged inspiring paths as activists for noble causes, while others left a more morally complex legacy, their stories often veiled in mystery and legend. Despite their contrasting backgrounds and experiences, these women share a common thread: their captivating stories and the tragic reality that their lives and accomplishments have been forgotten or deliberately obscured with the passage of time. However, within their tales lie profound inspiration waiting to be rediscovered. Women Forgotten in History invites readers to embrace the richness of these forgotten narratives, to honour these remarkable women, and to find in their stories a wellspring of empowerment and motivation.
This book investigates the epigraphic habit of the Eastern Mediterranean in antiquity, from the inception of alphabetic writing to the seventh c. CE, aiming to identify whether there was one universal epigraphic culture in this area or a number of discrete epigraphic cultures.Chapters examine epigraphic culture(s) through quantitative analysis of 32,062 inscriptions sampled from ten areas in the Eastern Mediterranean, from the Black Sea coast to Greece, western to central Asia Minor, Phoenicia to Egypt. They show that the shapes of the epigraphic curves are due to different factors occurring in different geographical areas and in various epochs, including the pre-Greek epigraphic habit, the moment of urbanization and Hellenization, and the organized Roman presence. Two epigraphic maxima are identified in the Eastern Mediterranean: in the third c. BCE and in the second c. CE. This book differs from previous studies of ancient epigraphic culture by taking into account all categories of inscriptions, not just epitaphs, and in investigating a much broader area over the broadly defined classical antiquity. This volume is a valuable resource for anyone working on ancient epigraphy, history or the cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean.

This volume presents detailed results on the manufacturing technology and elemental composition of some 136 objects in the collections of six European museums, with discussion of the findings in historical and cultural contexts. The starting point was the remarkable jewelry buried with a woman and a child who lived about 1650-1550 BC at Qurna, the West Bank of ancient Thebes in Upper Egypt. The questions generated from this find led to investigation of assemblages and individual artifacts from earlier periods in varied social contexts, from the rural environment of Qau and Badari, to sites connected with urban or royal centers, such as Riqqa, Haraga and Lahun.
"Introduces the workings and uses of Egyptian hieroglyphs, the various degrees of cultural knowledge of their makers and - most importantly - the influence hieroglyphs had on other scripts and notations in antiquity"--
""In ancient Egypt, a woman's primary role was that of mother, and as such she ensured her place within both her household and her community. And so, gods, doctor-magicians, as well as ghosts were all called upon to help the woman become pregnant. Pregnancy was not without risks, and the many tests, prescriptions, and spells that have survived to this day help us to understand obstetrics as it was practiced in those distant times. Once the woman had eluded the ill will of Seth-who was held responsible for miscarriages-and had reached her term, she was faced with the much awaited and yet also feared moment of birth. The successful delivery of a child into the world was seen as a gift of the gods, but it did not mean that the parent's worries were over. Indeed, it has been estimated that a third of all children did not reach the age of five years despite the combined efforts of parents and doctor-magicians to protect them. Amandine Marshall draws upon a wealth of sources, including texts, images, iconography, artefacts, and children's bodies themselves, as well as medicine, anthropology, and ethnography, to examine these issues and more, and in doing so sheds unprecedented light on the experience of maternity and early childhood in ancient Egypt.""--

THE GOLDEN ELLIPSE is a science fiction action adventure novel bristling with supernatural intrigue and a clandestine organization pulling humanity's strings.
The Late Middle Kingdom and the Second Intermediate Period were the heyday for scarab seals with names in Ancient Egypt. During this time, names of kings and non-royal individuals occur on hundreds of scarabs and their impressions making scarabs one of the primary groups of written sources for the period. This book explores research paths opened by confronting the textual evidence provided by scarabs with the stylistic and typological traits observable on them in an effort to recontextualize these miniature decorative objects, most of which stem from mass-scale undocumented plundering in the late 19th and early 20th century. The book takes a new perspective on scarab production in Egypt showing that different types of scarabs were produced concurrently, and the production of scarabs was not limited to a single centre at a given period. It amends the methodology of studying Middle Bronze Age scarabs in Egypt to acknowledge that artisans purposefully reproduced certain scarab styles. The study contributes to the ongoing discussions on the chronology of the Second Intermediate Period, Egypt's interconnections with the Levant and the role of foreigners in Egypt in the Middle Kingdom.
