Beyond Courage recounts several inspiring feats of escape and evasion by downed airmen during the Korean conflict. The airmen endured incredible hardships, first at the hands of their captors, then as they managed, by one means or another, to make their way back to the safety of U.N. lines. As preparation for the book, author Clay Blair researched the military's incident records, then interviewed the survivors themselves to fill in any gaps in the accounts told to Air Force officers shortly after their rescue, and to recapture their personal reactions to their arduous adventures. The stories include members of the U.N. forces in Korea-not solely Americans-but also Turks and Greeks and 'ROK's (Republic of Korea soldiers), and friendly North Korean Christians, who risked their lives to help downed airmen. In addition to enemy soldiers, the terrain and climate posed terrible challenges to men without adequate food, clothing, or shelter. In the story Cold, for example, one can feel the sub-zero temperatures as the escapee struggles to walk for miles with frozen feet (doctors would later be forced to amputate both feet to save the airman's life). Challenges were also psychological, as portrayed in the first story, Robinson Crusoe of MiG Alley. There, a downed airman recounts his shattering loneliness of a month spent on a deserted island-with friendly planes flying over almost daily but ignorant of the plight of the stranded airman below them. Despite the passage of nearly 70 years since the cessation of this 'forgotten war, ' the stories in Beyond Courage remain a testament to the power of human endurance and will in the face of extreme, life-threatening challenges.
The story of Helen Khal and the artists who altered the course of modern and contemporary art in the Middle East and beyond. Helen Khal: Gallery One and Beirut in the 1960s is a reflective exhibition catalogue, part archive, as well as a living testament to the late Helen Khal (1923-2009). A polymath, artist, educator, and writer, Khal was also the cofounder of Gallery One, the first modern and contemporary art gallery in Lebanon, which opened its doors to the public in Beirut in 1963. This catalogue follows an exhibition initiated by Carla Chammas and curated by Chammas and Rachel Dedman as part of Home Works 8: A Forum on Cultural Practices, which opened its doors at the Sursock Museum, Beirut in October 2019. The exhibition, like the catalogue, detailed Helen's life and practice as a catalytic lens through which to explore the work of a group of artists whom she was close to, in life and in art, including: Chafic Abboud, Yvette Achkar, Etel Adnan, Huguette Caland, Simone Fattal, Farid Haddad, Helen Khal, Saloua Raouda Choucair, Aref El Rayess, and Dorothy Salhab-Kazemi. From here, the publication seeks to address the exhibition's themes of love, sex, and motherhood, the relationship between visual art and the literary landscape of 1960s and 1970s Beirut, and the galleries and studios in which public collaborations and private kinships were forged. Taking an intimate approach to a fabled period, Helen Khal: Gallery One and Beirut in the 1960s unfolds a rich picture of the friendships, connections, modes of exchange, common concerns, and differing approaches of some of the best-known and least-remembered artists of the mid-twentieth century in Lebanon. With a historian's eye and a theorist's ingenuity, Michael Doyle, whose writings on liberal peace have revolutionised modern statesmanship, cogently assesses the tectonic shifts threatening a global order that has held for more than seventy years. As tensions among China, Russia and the US escalate perilously towards a new Cold War, Doyle introduces a radical paradigm that will facilitate the international co-operation necessary to avert the global threats of our time.Combining dramatic history with trenchant analysis and landmark theory, Doyle explores the impacts of cyber-warfare, foreign election meddling and the unprecedented schism of modern politics on American foreign policy. He demonstrates that there can be no success in addressing climate change without China's cooperation, nor any hope of averting nuclear catastrophe without Russia's.In the tradition of Gaddis' The Cold War and Clark's The Sleepwalkers, Cold Peace provides one of the most necessary analyses of global power in decades.
With a foreword by fellow POW, Senator John McCain, Taps on the Walls contains all the poems General Borling created during his confinement. Readers will discover remarkable stories of endurance, life lessons, and means to achieve personal triumph.
A vivid and gripping story of an epic Maine snowstorm that tested the very limits of human endurance. A National Bestseller
The book intends to critically evaluate the publications concerning the history of the Jews from Romania and Hungary (1945-1953) identified in Romania and Hungary, providing a description of historical context where the Jewish community developed its activity in the aftermath of the Second World War, when it severely reduced in terms of numbers, destroyed as community in terms of state of health of its members and materially affected by the consequences of the war. Nevertheless, even in the first years after the war they tried to re-build as members of of their community and later on to collaborate with the communist party for a better status or emigration in Israel. The most important issue of the time was the emigration of Romanian Jews in Israel and the negotiations which were pursued with the view of reaching this objective. From the volume, it results that the Jews were rather victims of the communism than beneficiaries, as it was often considered. Through the intermediation of the books and articles and of the collaboration with Jewish community from Oradea, author succeeded to know the Jews which come with their culture and traditions to enrich the cultural variety.

Raven FAC. Full-color images, Non-fiction, Secret war Laos 1970, personal account, LS 20A, Forward Air Controller, O-1 Bird dog, AT-28D, U17B. Vang Pao, Hmong resistance, Allied Government corruption. Faith. We were birds of prey; finding and destroying targets of opportunity and defending allied outposts. We dueled with dragons every day. In a flash of time, at the speed of haste, we pressed forward in the straps to the next battle, knowing many of us would die very young. Living in the present, and sculpting the future as best we could; we did our best to free the oppressed. Allied pilots flew with conspicuous bravery that others could live in Freedom's dignity, and love in her blessings of peace. Worthy dreams are too often victims of reality, like wilderness and paradise, light and dark, and long life. Ravens shared leaded air by day and warrior stories relived by night. "It feels so good when gunners miss." Close Air Support, Guerrilla Warfare. Ambassador's Secret War. USIS, AIRA, ARMA, My Ravens, Our General Vang Pao. Hmong Freedom Fighters, Robin Scout Translators, Chao Pha Khao Fighter Pilots, Special Guerrilla Unit (SGU), Special Operations, SKY, CAS, Air America, Continental Air, Refugees, USAID, Project 404, Det. 1 56th SOW, DEPCHIEF, RTA, RTAF, RLA, RLAF, RLG, PL, LPLA, NVA, PAVN, ICC. This work is an expression of my experiences as a Raven Forward Air Controller during the Loa Civil War. My window of participation was from December 1969 thru June 1970. This work is about people I knew who risk their lives in a fight for the freedom of others; and whose visions were twisted and tempered by the crucible of horrid War. This is a story of promise, betrayal, and hardship that progressed to a refugee gateway leading to compassion, freedom, education, and prosperity. The Hmong, Lao, Cambodian, Montagnard, and Vietnamese refugees from the Vietnam Area War produced vibrant communities in the United States. The Hmong preserved and learned to adapt to the American system without losing their cultural identity as Hmong or Americans. The Hmong have cleared the path and set the example for new refugees to follow. I hope this work is helpful to many in understanding the Raven's mission during the Secret War in Laos. This work should be encouraging for war refugees new to America. The United States military veterans should find goodwill in stories of survival and courage against great odds. "Freedom is not Free."

Focusing both on foreign relations as well as domestic matters such as economics, ideology, religion, culture and education, this book offers a fresh and well-researched study of a key period in modern Greek history.

In this fully illustrated introduction, acclaimed historian Dr Aaron Edwards provides a concise overview of one of the most difficult and controversial actions in recent history.Spanning 38 years of the 'Troubles', the British Army's deployment in Northern Ireland (codenamed Operation Banner) was one of the most difficult and controversial in its recent history. Over 10,000 troops were on active service during much of the campaign, which saw armoured vehicles, helicopters and special forces deployed onto the streets of Ulster. In this book, Dr Aaron Edwards considers the strategic, operational and tactical aspects of Operation Banner, as the Army's military objectives morphed from high-profile peacekeeping into a covert war against the IRA. Using personal testimony from both sides of the sectarian divide, as well as insights from the soldiers themselves, he presents an authoritative introduction to the Army's role in the Troubles, providing expert analysis of Operation Banner's successes and failures.Updated and revised for the new edition, with full-colour maps and 50 new images, this is an accessible introduction to the complicated yet fascinating history of modern Britain's longest military campaign.
In the second half of the 19th century visions of an infrastructurally integrated imperial space captivated the minds of Russian administrators and businessmen. Infrastructural integration promised to unravel the economic and political potential of the Russian Empire but it also revealed its administrative weakness. The book explores the challenges the Tsarist administration faced in harmonizing the multitudinous regional economic regimes in its vast landed empire. It analyzes conflicting logics towards the imperial space and demonstrates how the modern project of an infrastructurally integrated space limited the leeway in resorting to imperial administrative practices and accelerated the "nationalization" of the Russian Empire's economic space.
To hippietøser udlever deres drøm og tager turen over land til Indien.
