Shakespeare er for de fleste ensbetydende med skuespil, men han skrev også andre ting, blandt andet en række sonetter. Det vides ikke med sikkerhed, hvor, hvornår og til hvem de blev skrevet. Det tidligste, man ved om dem, er at de blev udgivet som samling af bogtrykkeren Thomas Thorpe i 1609, selv om de næppe fra Shakespeares hånd har været ment som en samlet gruppe tekster. Deres indhold og indbyrdes forhold har været genstand for megen forskning, men er stadig i mange hen­seender en gåde.For første gang nogensinde udkommer sonetterne nu i en dansk gendigtning, der nøjagtigt bevarer Shakespeares versemål og rim. Det antages, at Shakespeare har haft sin egen mening med at benytte disse særlige former, og i modsætning til tidligere oversættelser gengiver hver sonet i denne udgave trofast sit forlæg.
