This generously illustrated and comprehensive book focuses on a decisive decade in Max Beckmann's career as one of the leading figurative painters of the twentieth century. This publication will provide insight into a critical period in the artist's development and the accomplishments that earned him such high esteem. Max Beckmann's brief but profoundly jarring service as a medical orderly during World War I led to a nervous breakdown. He assimilated his experiences and incorporated recent and radical developments in art, such as Cubism and Expressionism, leading him to advance new pictorial conceptions beginning in 1915. To many of his contemporaries, the work Beckmann created between 1917 and 1925 placed him at the forefront of the latest developments in representational painting. In 1925, Beckmann's celebrated status was confirmed by his prominence in the groundbreaking "Neue Sachlichkeit" (New Objectivity) exhibition in Mannheim, although he later distanced himself from the term. This book will situate Beckmann artistically and historically. Essays by both established experts and emerging scholars investigate the seminal energy found in the work he created between 1915 to 1925-a period to which the artist himself repeatedly returned over the course of his lifetime. The self- referential aspect of Beckmann's output is key to understanding his progression as an artist, which comes more clearly into focus via an analysis of these critical early years.
Discover how painters such as Van Gogh, Mondrian, and Jacoba van Heemskerck drew on the legacy of Dutch landscapes and realism to put their own spin on the Impressionist movement. Impressionism may have originated in France, but artists in late 19th- and early 20th-century Netherlands quickly made it their own. The genre's vibrant colors and focus on light and atmosphere were a perfect complement to the country's groundbreaking traditions of landscape painting and realism. This exhibition catalog brings together hundreds of works by nearly forty artists including Johan Barthold Jongkind, Vincent van Gogh, Jacoba van Heemskerck, and Piet Mondrian. It traces the birth of the Hague School, whose practitioners captured the changing moods of light in the coastline's vast, grey skies. And it explores the Amsterdam Impressionists, whose cityscapes offered realistic images of modern life. Alongside vibrant reproductions of masterworks, a series of lively essays explore a diverse array of topics, including Dutch landscape painting within an international context; Dutch artist settlements and communities; and iconography in Dutch impressionism.
A groundbreaking, new perspective on the painter's scandalous nudes. Among the most celebrated works of Modigliani's brief but brilliant career are his large-format nudes. Drenched in color and glowing with the artist's deep appreciation of women and the female form, these works ushered in a new era of nude portraiture, while also causing an enormous scandal. This stunning exhibition catalog offers a new perspective on this aspect of Modigliani's work by examining for the first time his portraits of emancipated women sporting coupe garçonnes haircuts and wearing loin cloths. Modigliani was one of the first chroniclers of the femme moderne, which also influenced his nude painting and the scandal they caused. Featuring lavish reproductions and astute texts by leading scholars, this volume also examines Modigliani's cultural context in European Classicism, from Toulouse-Lautrec and Cezanne to the work of his contemporaries, including Paula Modersohn-Becker, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Jeanne Mammen and Wilhelm Lehmbruck; and traces his impact on future European Modernism and New Objectivity.
"Eleven-year-old Nico Krispis never told a lie. When the Nazi's invade his home in Salonika, Greece, the trustworthy boy is discovered by a German officer, who offers him a chance to save his family. All Nico has to do is convince his fellow Jewish residents to board trains heading towards 'new homes' where they are promised jobs and safety. Unaware that this is all a cruel ruse, the innocent boy goes to the station platform every day and reassures the passengers that the journey is safe. But when the final train is at the station, Nico sees his family being loaded into a large boxcar crowded with other neighbors. Only after it is too late does Nico discover that he helped send the people he loved--and all the others--to their doom at Auschwitz. Nico never tells the truth again"--
They could have been allies: two self-made millionaires who invented a global industry, in an era when wife and mother were supposed to be the highest goals for their sex. Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein each founded empires built on grit and determination...and yet they became locked in a feud spanning three continents, two world wars, and the Great Depression. Brought up in poverty, Canadian-born Elizabeth Arden changed popular opinion, persuading women from all walks of life to buy skincare products that promised them youth and beauty. Helena Rubinstein left her native Poland, and launched her company with scientific claims about her miracle creams made with anti-ageing herbs. And when it came to business, nothing was off-limits: poaching each other's employees, copying each other's products, planting spies, hiring ex-husbands, and one-upping each other every chance they had. This was a rivalry from which there was no surrender! And through it all were two women, bold, brazen, and determined to succeed--no matter the personal cost. In this sweeping novel from the bestselling author of Jackie and Maria and The Manhattan Girls, two larger-than life fashion icons come alive with all their passion, bitterness, and ambition as they each try to live the American dream.--Amazon

From 1872 to 1939, a significant number of Australian and New Zealand artists were chosen for exhibition at the annual French Salons. The imprimatur of the Salons bestowed prestige, publicity and visibility, and increased an artist's saleability, both at home and abroad. But the character of the Salons fragmented over time and selection became coloured by the nature of the Salon and the values it represented. Tradition, rebellion, innovation and unique interests became arbiters and by the close of these years, France had lost its position as the centre of the art world. With details drawn from the archives of the Louvre, Australasian Artists at the French Salons, is a fascinating and detailed record of the world of these artists ... their allegiance to a studio or master, their subjects, their travels and their locations. We sense their aspirations and their hopes and their excitement at establishing themselves on a world stage.A fully updated 3rd edition in colour.

Sociologists and writers, all agreed on a common point of view: the family has changed, and even more so it is in crisis. I wanted to do a research on Hervé Bazin's novel, Qui j'ose aimer, because in his work, man is celebrated and the family is the central theme of all his novels. I will try to see how this family mutation in the broad sense is transposed in the novel and influences the relationships between all the members of the family. What I also found very interesting was the fact that the novel was about a matriarchal family (recomposed towards the end) and this phenomenon is similar to that of today where many women live alone or live only with their children, the traditional figure of the father not being so important anymore. The novel also deals with this problem of marriage, which is no longer defined as an institutional logic, an inescapable social obligation (as in the past), but rather as an emotional logic ("we love each other, we marry"). The traditional model, based on marriage, has been shattered.
Football and Fascism. The Politics of Popular Culture in Portugal tells the hidden history of football and discusses its political, social and cultural foundations, during the longest running authoritarian regime in Europe. Theoretically grounded on Bourdieu's field theory, and using a multi-scalar methodology, this award-winning research explores the political tensions between the nationalization of sports envisaged by the Portuguese "New State" and the integration of national football in a globalized urban popular culture. Mobilizing unexplored archival sources, and a wide array of primary materials, this groundbreaking work offers new insight on the administrative structures of the corporativist state, the making of an authoritarian cultural program, and the relation between state institutions and civil society. Besides broadening the scope of existing transnational histories of football, this study also puts into question the conventional geographies and political chronologies adopted in sports history. For his oustanding research, Rahul Kumar won the 2015 "Mário Soares Award - EDP Foundation" for best work in Portuguese history by researchers under 35 and received an honourable mention, also in 2015, in the "CES Award for Young Portuguese speaking Social Scientists", attributed by the Centre for Social Studies of Coimbra University.
Beautifully illustrated with images of Dorothea Tanning's artwork and more, the first--and definitive--study of this important artist's life and creative output. Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) has for decades been known primarily as a Surrealist, but Exquisite Dreams shows how the work of this passionate, dynamic, and voraciously curious artist is impossible to categorize. Tanning's lesser-known but equally powerful sculptures, abstract paintings, and films are explored here, and her writings, biography, and art are examined in the contexts of twentieth-century developments in advertising, fashion, popular culture, and art in New York and Paris. Using new archival sources and analyses of Tanning's work in a variety of media, Amy Lyford broadens our understanding of the artist and illuminates her stunning diversity and achievement. This richly illustrated book is an important contribution to the history of women artists, gender, and sexuality studies, as well as the history of Surrealism.

Interweaving the lives of three of the most significant and also controversial generals of the 20th century, culminating in their battles and rivalries in World War II, Triumph of Leadership explores the varying paths that George Patton, Bernard Montgomery, and Erwin Rommel each took, and philosophies they developed, towards leadership.Patton and Montgomery each longed to fight Rommel given the latter’s stature and reputation, and both succeeded. The competitive rivalry between Patton and Montgomery and their caustic comments about each other in Sicily and Normandy, caused constant problems for Eisenhower and other Allied leaders.Clark has woven a superb array of letters and diary entries into his story, allowing the three generals to speak for themselves and for others—from superior officers to rank-and-file soldiers—to speak about them. This makes his narrative all the more vivid.Colorful and egotistical, each figure had character flaws and needed to somehow overcome their own serious misadventures at various points. The leadership lessons embedded in each general’s story can be usefully applied in many arenas.Only Montgomery lived well beyond World War II. Accused of treason, Rommel was forced to take his own life before the war ended. Patton died a year later in an accident. For readers of Carlo D’Este’s bestseller Patton: A Genius for War (HarperCollins, 1995) and Terry Brighton’s Patton, Montgomery, Rommel: Masters of War (Crown, 2009).Lloyd Clark is one of the leading military historians of our time, and Patton’s inclusion should encourage strong American review attention. Clark is an expert on all aspects of military leadership, making his assessments of the three generals all the more authoritative.Lloyd Clark has published four previous books on World War II with Grove. His most recent, Blitzkrieg (2016), has sold over 10,000 copies in all formats.
