Under sejl fortæller historien om de danske langfarter i sejlskibenes tid. Både de dramatiske med mytteri, slaveoprør, sygdom og forlis og dem, hvor det meste gik som planlagt: hårdt arbejde, kummerlige forhold og lasten fuld af værdifuldt gods på vejen hjem. De allerlængste sørejser fra begyndelsen af 1600-tallet til midt i 1800-tallet gik oftest til de danske tropekolonier – Trankebar, Guldkysten og De Vestindiske Øer – eller til Kina og Sydamerika. Under sejl giver for første gang en samlet fremstilling af langfarterne under dansk flag, hvor handelsflådens største skibe var hjemmefra i flere år ad gangen. Bogen fortæller om navigation, mandskaber, forplejning, justits og kvinder, og den følger udviklingen i sejlruter og sejltider. Man kommer tæt på sømændene, fra små skibsdrenge til erfarne kaptajner. Erik Gøbel (f. 1949), historiker og seniorforsker i Rigsarkivet i København 1981-2017. Erik Gøbel er forfatter til en lang række artikler og bøger om søfartens og tropekoloniernes historie og har i en årrække været et af de store navne inden for dansk søfartshistorie.

Desuden er de engelske og latinske betegnelser medtaget.
