The first professor of Celtic at Oxford, Sir John Rhys (1840-1915) carried out highly influential research in Celtic studies. First published in 1882, this clearly written work gives an account of Celtic etymology, history and ethnology in Britain from the time of Julius Caesar to the eleventh-century Scottish kingdoms.
