Cynthia's Revels

Cynthia's Revels: Or The Fountain of Self-Love is a play written by Ben Jonson and first performed in 1600. The play is a satire on the court of Queen Elizabeth I, and centers around the character of Crites, who represents the courtier class. Crites is obsessed with self-love and spends his time indulging in various pleasures and vices. The other characters in the play, including Cynthia, the goddess of the moon, and various courtiers, attempt to teach Crites the error of his ways and bring him back to a more virtuous path. The play is notable for its use of allegory and its commentary on the Elizabethan court.
