I oktober 1859 forliste "Royal Charter" udfor Wales klippefyldte kyst. Det var på vej hjem fra Australien med bl. a. en stor ladning guld foruden en mængde passagerer. Omkring 500 mennesker omkom. Dickens besøgte stedet umiddelbart efter, og giver her en skildring af forholdende, hvor dykkere leder efter guld og lig. Dette er fornem journalistik - her kunne nutiden lære en del.
Vi befinder os omkring 1850 - industrialiseringens tidsalder er begyndt - dampmaskinerne hamrer og larmer og tyk, sort røg vælter op af skorstenene og dækker byer og landskaber med kulstøv og aske. Liberalismen udfolder sig i al sin grusomhed og midt i dette infereno lever der mennesker, der gennem Dickens geniale måde at skildre mennesker på, bliver levende for os i al deres armod, styrke og fejltagtighed.
