This book can save you $100's, $1000's or even your life! This book is about the really important parts of backpacking that people rarely give a thought to; the things that can turn someone's dream holiday into the trip from hell. This book is here to prevent you being robbed, ripped off, lost, stuck, sick, confused, scared or in trouble. Pfft, I don't need that - I'm an independent backpacker? Yeah, yeah, I know; you're an independent backpacker and don't need someone to tell you all this stuff. If I read the above I wouldn't buy this book either. Fortunately I've only included useful things learnt from experience. This is the stuff that I chatted about with travellers every night in hostels and finally decided it needed to be written down; to help everyone out. Covering over 70 topics, this book has it all; from the necessary such as choosing hostels and what to pack, to the fun, like getting free drinks and how to have the best night out, to the zany such as a mind-bending experience with the hallucinogenic Peruvian medicine, Ayahuasca. Boring book full of information? Hell no it ain't. It's written in a light-hearted way and full of funny stories of when things have gone terribly wrong, or awesomely right. People have even emailed me to say they embarrassed themself on the bus from laughing too hard... though they are probably just easily amused. I'll say no more; just read the first chapter for free and decide for yourself. Just click on the book to start reading. Warning: contains occasional coarse language. Author Bio: The author has spent over 1300 nights in hostels across 45+ countries in 6 continents and has done plenty wrong. Examples include getting lost in the Sahara desert, having a sword held to his throat and AK-47's pointed at him, nearly burning down a Filipino village, running completely out of money numerous times, getting robbed in an alleyway, being denied check-in for an international flight, overstaying his visa, cutting himself badly with a machete, pooping himself in public etc.

  • - The Myth of the Liberal Media
    af David Edwards
    878,95 kr.

"Guardians of Power ought to be required reading in every media college. It is the most important book about journalism I can remember." - John Pilger "Regular critical analysis of the media, filling crucial gaps and correcting the distortions of ideological prisms, has never been more important. Media Lens has performed a major public service by carrying out this task with energy, insight, and care." - Noam Chomsky "Media Lens is doing an outstanding job of pressing the mainstream media to at least follow their own stated principles and meet their public service obligations. [This is] fun as well as enlightening." - Edward S. Herman Can a corporate media system be expected to tell the truth about a world dominated by corporations? Can newspapers, including the 'liberal' Guardian and the Independent, tell the truth about catastrophic climate change -- about its roots in mass consumerism and corporate obstructionism -- when they are themselves profit-oriented businesses dependent on advertisers for 75% of their revenues? Can the BBC tell the truth about UK government crimes in Iraq when its senior managers are appointed by the government? Has anything fundamentally changed since BBC founder Lord Reith wrote of the establishment: "They know they can trust us not to be really impartial"? Why did the British and American mass media fail to challenge even the most obvious government lies on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction before the invasion in March 2003? Why did the media ignore the claims of UN weapons inspectors that Iraq had been 90-95% "fundamentally disarmed" as early as 1998? This book answers these questions, and more. Since July 2001, Media Lens has encouraged thousands of readers to email senior editors and journalists, challenging them to account for their distorted reporting on Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Haiti, East Timor, climate change, Western crimes in Central America, and much more. The responses -- often surprising, sometimes outrageous -- reveal the arrogance, unaccountability and servility to power of even our most respected media.

Most things we create will not matter. This book is about creating things that do, from a master innovator who brings science and art together in his cutting edge labs.Art and science are famous opposites. Contemporary innovation mostly keeps them far apart. But in this book, David Edwards-world-renowned inventor; Harvard professor of the practice of idea translation; creator of breathable insulin, edible food packaging, and digital scents-reveals that the secret to creating very new things of lasting benefit, including innovations we will need to sustain human life on the planet, lies in perceiving art and science as one. Here Edwards shares how he discovered a way of creating that transcends disciplines and incorporates the principles of aesthetics. He introduces us to cutting-edge artists, musicians, architects, physicists, mathematicians, engineers, chefs, choreographers, and novelists (among others) and uncovers a three-step cycle they all share in creating things that durably matter. This creator cycle looks unlike what we associate with game-changing innovation today, and aligns the most expressive art and the most revolutionary science in a radical reimagining of how we live. David Edwards and the innovators he profiles belong to an emerging grassroots renaissance flourishing in special environments that we all can make in our schools, companies and homes.Creating Things That Matter is a book for anyone wondering what tomorrow might be, and at last half believing that what they do can make a difference.

Graphic modelling is a form of multivariate analysis that uses graphs to represent models. These graphs display the structure of dependencies, both associational and causal, between the variables in the model. This textbook provides an introduction to graphical modelling with emphasis on applications and practicalities rather than on a formal development. It is based on the popular software package for graphical modelling, MIM, a freeware version of which can be downloaded from the Internet. Following an introductory chapter which sets the scene and describes some of the basic ideas of graphical modelling, subsequent chapters describe particular families of models, including log-linear models, Gaussian models, and models for mixed discrete and continuous variables. Further chapters cover hypothesis testing and model selection. Chapters 7 and 8 are new to the second edition. Chapter 7 describes the use of directed graphs, chain graphs, and other graphs. Chapter 8 summarizes some recent work on causal inference, relevant when graphical models are given a causal interpretation. This book will provide a useful introduction to this topic for students and researchers.
