Écrit d'un seul trait durant l'été 1887, Pierre et Jean est le quatrième roman de Maupassant. C'est une oeuvre naturaliste (ou réaliste-psychologique). L'oeuvre, très courte, est éditée en volume le 9 janvier 1889 chez Ollendorff. Elle est composée du récit, mais également d'une célèbre préface intitulée Le roman dans laquelle Maupassant expose en quelques pages sa vision du roman naturaliste qu'il propose de définir comme une étude psychologique dont Pierre et Jean se fera l'écho. Pierre et Jean a pour cadre la ville du Havre où vivent les Roland.

L'histoire se déroule dans un petit village normand. Le narrateur, un homme célibataire, se lie d'amitié avec un prêtre local qui est également son voisin. Le prêtre raconte au narrateur l'histoire de Jeanne, une jeune femme du village. Jeanne était une femme magnifique et vertueuse, mariée à un homme plus âgé, le docteur Ledru. Elle avait tout pour être heureuse, mais sa vie prit un tournant tragique lorsqu'elle tomba malade. Son mari tenta de la guérir, mais en vain. Jeanne se sentit de plus en plus malheureuse et impuissante.Un jour, le mari de Jeanne découvrit un carnet secret dans lequel elle confessait son amour pour un autre homme du village, un homme plus jeune et séduisant. Le docteur Ledru confronta sa femme à ce sujet, et elle avoua son amour pour l'autre homme.Le mari, malheureux et humilié, prit une décision terrible. Il tua l'homme dont sa femme était amoureuse, puis il se suicida. Jeanne fut laissée seule, sans mari ni amoureux, et sa beauté se fanait.La nouvelle explore les thèmes de la passion amoureuse, de la trahison et de la destinée tragique. Elle met en lumière comment l'amour peut conduire à des actes désespérés et avoir des conséquences dévastatrices sur la vie des personnages.
