This book contains 20 original piano pieces from intermediate to advanced in various styles of boogie and blues piano. These pieces are based on simple motifs, developed through one or two 12-bar choruses. This technique of motivic development is essential to improvising and composing in any style of music, and is especially useful in roots blues forms. By learning these pieces, the student will acquire the basic blues piano vocabulary and be prepared to play blues in different keys and feels. They are also excellent for strengthening the left hand. Most have few jazz chords, staying within a basic blues language limited to dominant seventh chords, with or without a ninth. These blues are mostly originals by Jeff, including the second line style "New Orleans Strut". Also included are two arrangements of traditional melodies: "Saint Louis Blues", by W. C. Handy, and "Saints Boogie", based on "When the Saints Come Marching In", with a left hand created by Jimmy Yancey, a prime source of inspiration for blues and rock pianists. Other styles include Otis Spann and Professor Longhair. Also included is a chart of basic blues scales to help more advanced and adventurous pianists in improvising on these pieces. The choice of repertoire plays an important role in the formation of the student, who should be exposed to a variety of styles. In addition, the meaning and motivating value of a work can positively influence musical learning. Considering the limitation of the traditional piano repertoire, which is largely based on the European repertoire, I recommend the inclusion of this book in piano course programs, so that pianists can develop their musicality and psychomotricity, as well as motivate themselves through a modern repertoire that is artistically attractive to the ears.
